I've recently had the option of purchasing a few other strategy 4x games out on the market now at a discount on Steam. However, upon researching them, it turns out that the AI is pretty braindead if not wholly reliant on cheating to be a challenge. No matter how nice the lore, presentation, UI, or perceived reputation of the game, you can never substitute a challenging AI for anything. I know we're all awaiting the next expansion. But the fact that we have received such a massive, sweeping and ultimately engaging overhaul of the AI in 2.0 for free makes that wait far more tolerable. I personally deeply appreciate that Stardock made it a priority to release this for free FIRST and for everyone, rather than making us wait for months and just releasing everything in one shot with the expansion. All of this gives Galciv 3 the robust base game experience that makes it likely for us to continue support for the future. As someone who doesn't play multiplayer much, having an AI that can out think me is absolutely fantastic.
Thanks!
No, thank you! I'd be out quite a bit of money and brain cells trying to sample other games before coming back.
Agree, Galciv is the only game I can just play non-stop. The rest have brain dead AI that gets dull quick
There's a lot of AI out there that can fairly easily be reduced to a balance sheet of + and - items for things like attitude and decision making. Once you learn what goes in what column, gaming the AI becomes reasonably straightforward. Even some of the better games out there, like Pandora:First Contact, which has had some fantastic AI work done on it (shout out to Ail / Alexander Stumpp!) and plays quite well, falls into this category.
GalCiv2 is the only game I've ever played - and I've played many, and a lot of GalCiv2 while I was helping with the community mod - that doesn't feel like the AI is playing off one or two balance sheets. I don't know what kind of algorithms are being evaluated under the covers, but it is a quite satisfying opponent that's hard to "cheese" (as Brad would probably say).
So hearing Brad say (in the Crusade teaser post, I think) that the GalCiv3 AI has now eclipsed GalCiv2 AI, makes me smile.
