I've just seen and read something about Star Control Origins. It's not much I know but from what I saw is a wrong focus in my opinion. What I got from Star Control 2 is 'Serious business with humorous elements' but what I've seen and thereof going to expect of Origins is 'Humorous business with serious elements'.
That's a bummer, really! Today it's either the one or the other or the 'Humorous business with serious elements' kind of things. I did see the concept video and the main ship is ok, but the planets... oh man! Humorous small and almost a caricature. It's easier to hide the size of planets and such by sprites and 2D drawings because the brain will fill in the rest (with mine I think from what I could observe) but this didn't hit the Star Control spot.
I really do appreciate that Stardock is trying to bring back a classic but from what I have seen I don't know yet. Is it just me? What do others think of it?
Have you read my post ?

My concerns is the same as yours, what gave Star Control Depth, realism and immersiveness was the realism, the touch of comical aspects made it funny and were welcome, but there is a fine balance that needs to be walked, basing a lot of aspects on a comical world is definately going to alienate the game and make it feel to not be a star control game at all.
The mainship looks fine, actually i just revisited the video again, i like the ship and the blue thrusters awesome, i like the centrifugical centre, that is quite realistic, however a few things, there was something lacking, star control 2's main ship showed the upgrades, hopefully we will have a few motherships to choose from, as we explore the universe and find abandoned relics or technology on planets. it would be really awesome to find an abandoned wrecked ship on a planet or quite a few throughout the galaxy, maybe even one stuck around a magnetar or locked in hyperspace or quasispace, unable to break free, but perhaps the one showcased was just the bare ship without upgrades and will be getting some refinement, i'd like to see more colour personally a star trek ship as an option would look good too. And we have to see more detail on the ship, i want to look at it from the outside and see something glowing, i've seen the ship does have perfectly lit blue thrusters well done, that looks very good), lights blinking on the surface would up the realism, even a number designation, finer details gives it wow factor.
Back to the planets, my views are thoroughly outlined in the link above, they have to keep the planets looking realistic,i do not like the 3d "spikey" planets as shown in the trailer, everything else looks good, the star as is looks perfect well done.
The planets would too if they take away the comical factor, and add moving clouds and storms, dust and rings on the outside of some, space is strange enough as it is as is the planets, no unrealistic stuff needs to be created, real physics is strange, the universe and countless of phenomena, quasars, pulsars, blackholes, posibilities of quasi these are just to name a few, out there it is real strange, the planets out there is strange and the vastness in variety as well as posibilites is mind blowing, this game needs to be based on those real aspects. Anyway i have put forth my views countless of times on this forum and many agreed i just hope they keep the game in line with realism and give us a starcontrol we can really immerse ourselves into.
One thing they should remember is to keep the physics real, they shouldn't spoonfeed us the planets once we're in a planet system, we have to navigate our way towards the planet (work for it, fight the elements, gravity rocks, asteroids like in SC2.)
Spoonfeeding the planets by auto navigation would make it non-rewarding, in hyperspace, you should have the option to let autopilot take you to your destination BUT no trickery, no speed cheating, no instant zip, the speed must stay exactly the same like in sc2, at anytime enabling you to take over manually and it needs to take time to get to the destintion, sc2 nailed the time just right, making you feel that you are travelling far through space, the whole concept in star control 2 wrt hyperspace was perfect.
There was a few things that ruined SC3, but one major factor was taking out hyperspace, it felt like i was playing a boardgame with family at home, that was most likely one of the most disapointing parts of the game, there's a few more but will not outline them now, i liked some aliens and i liked the melee in sc3 the rest was disapointing.
Real physics, that means no sounds in space, no fixed amount of crew that dies each time an enemy bullet/missile/plasmoid hits, saving the captain for last, no planets which you can bounce off instead of crash into, no inertialess drives like the arilou has, no lasers that stop after a certain distance like the chmmr/vux or even extinguish eachother at a certain point like the mmrnmhrm x-form, all bullets will fly forever until crashing into something.
Is that really what you want?

Like mentioned, there is a fine balance, only change a few things that would not affect the realism as a whole in a disapointing way, star control 2 nailed it.
The main focus should be to keep it real, and only bring in virtual aspects where needed, again star control 2 nailed it.
There is no problem with keeping the tiny bits and pieces of unrealistic aspects like you just mentioned in tact, and for sure the sound needs to be kept ! And the music, the atmosphere was so well in tune with the scenes in SC2, from the melee battles to the planetary navigation to hyperspace, engaging in conversation with aliens it was so well orchestrated.
The weaponry is future technology, so they can get away with doing whatever they need to keep the action flowing and exciting, star control 2 and three ,melees were brilliant, the weaponry awesome, intelligent and fun to use, what brought in realism was the fact that your ship needs to charge before you can discharge your weapon and special abilities of each ship was simply inspiring.
Keep that exactly like it is, add perhaps 1 or 2 surprise additions ONLY if it would compliment the already perfectly working physics/action/charecteristics of the ships and battles, but for a perfect outcome to make this a valid star control wrt reffering to the ships, change it only by adding different ships, different weaponry and you create the magic everyone longs for ! Even the details of the aliens pulling the levers in the ships makes it feel real.
