Hi All,
ObjectDock was last updated on July 15, 2014, nearly 2.5 years ago. Has Stardock abandoned it?
I'm trying to run it on my Surface Pro 4 running the latest version of Windows 10, and there are three major bugs:
1. Unusable Performance: Hovering over an icon in the dock causes it to magnify, but extremely slowly, to the point of being unusable. It severely disrupts workflow. It's like watching a(n extremely) slow-motion movie. If you quit ObjectDock, and in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\ObjectDock folder rename Dock64.exe to Dock64.exe.old and Dock64.dll to Dock64.dll.old and then run ObjectDock, that will fix the performance bug, but it creates a secondary bug: it completely breaks Aero Peek (see below), so that you no longer can see thumbnail previews. This makes ObjectDock useless.
2. Broken Aero Peek: Aero Peek (thumbnail previews) is not high-DPI-aware; the thumbnail previews look absolutely awful, which causes a usability problem: you can't read any text, etc., so as to identify the window you're looking for.
3. Universal Windows Platform ("Metro") Apps Not Supported: This means that you can't use ObjectDock to switch among "Metro" apps such as Facebook Messenger or Twitter because it doesn't add their icons to the dock--only a blank space that can't actually be selected!
And there is one minor, but annoying, bug:
4. Settings Not High-DPI-Aware: The Settings dialog box has pixelated fonts and images that are extremely ugly and look antiquated. This, and the bugs above, makes ObjectDock look and function like abandonware.
In conclusion, ObjectDock is unusable on Microsoft Surface Pros and Surface Books. There is no sign of active development by a competent software engineer. Version 2.20 is not in any meaningful sense compatible with Windows 10, and there is no reason to believe that Stardock is supporting this application. ObjectDock has no business being sold today. It was abandoned 2.5 years ago.
It's impossible to imagine that anyone at Stardock uses ObjectDock. They'd never be able to get any work done because of Bug 1, alone. What conclusion can we draw but that ObjectDock is abandonware?
Consequently, I'd like a refund.
Steve
Hey Elvee, long time no see. How have you been keeping? Well I hope.
What is sad about this company is that isn't willing to stick by all the folks that has bought this wonderful program over the years.
No updates in over 2 years. I used this program when it was first brought out. And this is how they support us by dumping the best program out there. Their point is quite clear they don't care about us. But I am sure they cared about us when we were buying their products. Why would a company not support and update the best program of its kind. Nobody can come close to the usefulness of the program. Now I can't even install Object dock on Windows. Come on Stardock get up to date. Many want to still use your program. Be loyal to us as we were loyal to you when you started. We hung in there for you, now you should hang in there for us.
Thanks for the best [was] docking program out there. Useless now though.
ObjectDock 2.20 was release in 2014. It worked well with the current operating systems of the day; anyone who bought it got their money's worth. Congratulations!
Microsoft made changes with Windows 10 that made a great program less than optimal.
Does it still work as it was designed? Yes, it does. Has it been updated to handle the changes MS made? No.
Would we like to update it . . well . . it's complicated. It's business.
Will the time it takes to make it work into the future worth the expected sales? We don't know. It continues to be looked at.
Sorry to be pricky here:
OD HAS UNFIXED issues with 64-bit (which could and is be seriously used by Joe User since Vista (2007!!!)) way before 2014.
Not Windows 10s fault at all.
I have been running it successfully on Windows 10 - 32 and 64 bit versions with little problems until today.
I just received the Windows 10 Creator's Update today and now I have "Entry point not found..." in about 7 .dll files! These are the standard necessary .dll files to run Windows (version.dll, shlwapi.dll, uxtheme.dll, shcore.dll, etc.).
I hope Stardock is aware of this new problem and can come up with a fix soon!
Doing well How about yourself? Just peeking in from time to time.
It's good to hear that you're doing okay. Hopefully that is a situation that continues indefinitely.
Me, well I'm doing okay as well.... currently suffering a bit of back pain, but other than that, everything is rosy.
