So I upgraded to the new fences. And I liked the idea of having the roll-ups along the edge of my main screen, and just moving the mouse over them when I need to access the apps / date / folders. But when I do this, they unroll underneath the existing windows. What use is that? Is there an 'always on top' setting that I'm missing?
I'm not running any other customising software, just plain Windows 10.
Have you rebooted since installing?
The selected window should be at a higher level than the one in the background, like this: http://screencast.com/t/s05gNqT9khqd
Here's a screenshot. It's not another Fence that I mean when I say an existing window - it's everything else; application windows, explorer windows and the rest.
Fences are always at desktop level and will not appear above other windows, only other fences.
Is there any chance this could be implemented? I was just wishing for the option for rollups to show on top of open windows yesterday morning as I was working with a lot of open windows at the time, and kept going up to the top to pull on a fence and had to close windows before I could get to what I needed. It would be so handy!
I do love the rollup option!
We have that logged as a feature request so we can look into it more.
Great! Hopefully, it can be worked in, would be very functional.
Glad I found this question and suggestion in the forums. I 100% agree with this as a feature request. The real value of the roll ups will be evident when they are actually useful when program windows are open on the desktop and one wishes to retrieve something from the desktop/window.
One other feature request would be to permit a short time delay before rolling up a window when the mouse leaves the window. Perhaps a configurable time delay, but certainly more than "instant".
Thanks,
Roger
Yes, I would like to see this as well.
+1 for me too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't some of the better dock software solutions (ObjectDock, Winstep Nexus, etc) do this? I think I remember ObjectDock being able to snap a folder dock to the edge of the screen. And it could display docks on top of open windows. I think. Haven't used it in years, so not really sure.
Obviously, having Fences do it would be best, but maybe playing with docking software could be an acceptable workaround if needed.
That said, I also remember most of the ObjectDock background skins being a bit . . . gaudy. Don't know what it's like now, but you may end up needing to make your own if you want to maintain the elegance of Fences.
I agree with the feature request. I like rolled up fences on the top edge. But the whole idea was that the roll down on top of application windows for access.

Im not finding Fences any benefit as it has no stay on top option so its the same as icons on the desktop only in groups
and you still have to move everything out of the way to find the fences as you did with desktop icons
without this option I wouldnt buy it.
Or does the paid version have this option.
I agree with this request, but I would take it one step further. When a roll-up is docked, I would like them to never be covered by a window, even in full screen mode. Similar to the task bar, windows will full-screen to the top of the task bar, but no further. If that could be implemented, or an option to allow that to occur could be implemented, one could make an instant access panel across the top of the screen that wouldn't be interfered with by window placement. This could be very handy for someone like me who does medical reviews and must open a myriad of different FAQ pages and guideline pages all the time. This feature would make Fences almost perfect....
The only thing that would make it more perfect would be compatibility with multiple desktops. That is, allowing unique fences and icon sets on each desktop.
Thanks for listening...
If you are looking for docks on the edge of the monitor that are always on top with either mouse or hotkey then ObjectDock may be a better application for you.
Or, if you are using Start10 beta, Fences show up in All PRograms and are on top of other windows.
Actually it is Start10 release as 1.5 went out a few weeks ago now.
Yep, rolling down fences on top of other windows is definitely needed
+1 always on-top option for edge-snapped rollup fences.
It's five months since this thread opened. It's time to take this off the 'feature request' list and put a single radiobox option in the app for roll-ups. I've got three folders that I'm in and out of all day which I've created roll-ups for on my second monitor. They are ingenius if I can actually use them, but precisely useless to me in every condition except when that second monitor is all but empty. If it's not, they roll-up underneath every other open window making them a frustration instead of an aid.
On-top is one thing, but what about the time delay suggested here? Both of these are obvious improvements on the product that could have been put in place in an afternoon. And both have been left to fester, unadressed for half a year.
As a customer, I'm insulted that, rather than accept and implement stellar feedback from a community of actual users -- where all these people have chimed in and exposed a fundamental lacking of functionality in the application... (which wants just ONE THING TO FIX) Instead, you're literally in these forums telling the people who've purchase the product that instead of expecting responsive support and updates, they should just go get another application. Just go buy another thing. Or run one more app in the background constantly.
So when, precisely, did Stardock give up on being a software company? Cause this ain't how you run one.
The problem here is you are looking for something that the product is not and never has been.
Fences exist at a desktop level. They are not separate windows and thus cannot appear above actual windows on the monitor. In the same way your desktop icons remain on the desktop, Fences also remain on the desktop.
Thanks for logging this as a feature request. Fences is designed for power users which often have multiple windows opened. So having a way to Push and Pop all Fences would be of significant value. Otherwise Fences only provides value when doing light duty work with 0-2 windows apps open.
Another good feature would be the ability to Roll-up Fences vertically on either the right or left side of the screen, not just horizontally as it currently works. Most users have widescreen monitors so there's usually space on the sides of the screen that are not covered up by multiple windows apps that are open. But this feature would also need the Push and Pop feature since Fences with Roll-up don't push to the front of open windows.
If it's not possible to Push and Pop Fences above open windows apps then could a different feature be added to solve this problem? Currently Fences supports double clicking the desktop to show or hide Fences. Could that feature be combined with the Windows Show Desktop. This would be a very easy feature to add since it's just combining the action with an existing Windows shortcut (Show Desktop).
Example:
Yes, very handy. I work from home and also use multiple applications and having to move them around to see what's in the Fence is very annoying. This should definitely be implemented.
Neil essentially said it all. Fences is a coralling system for Icons which are part of the Desktop and by Microsoft's design are intended to stay at that level [Z-Order].
Windows are designed/intended to be above the desktop and/or above each other as when focus is changed [again Z-order].
Fences is not designed [nor can it be] to alter the layering of Microsoft's GUI. Other Launchers are designed for that, and in Stardock's case specifically ObjectDock which can and does pop-over both the Desktop AND open Windows.
It is safe to say that Fences will never have an option to alter the z-order of the Microsoft GUI [though as soon as you say that anything can happen].
Confidence. N. That feeling you have immediately before you fully understand the situation...
PS....would I like it as an option? Yes...
