Be careful what you wish for.
Next year all the 4X’s are going to come out. What I write below is not under some NDA. I know it because it’s my job to know it.
Let me walk you through the schedule:
1H2016: Stellaris, Master of Orion
2H2016: Civilization VI, Endless Space 2
I could be wrong on the dates. You could swap some of this around a bit but you get the idea.
Where is GalCiv III in this?
Stardock will be announcing its first expansion in January. I won’t go into details here but it is something we’ve never done before. 2016 we’re going to release a steady stream of GalCiv updates but we are going to do our best to stay away from the flood and work on the really big GalCiv III expandalone for much later.
GalCIv III has been a tremendous success for us. It’s kind of our Civ V. That is, with Civ V, a lot of long time fans were really upset that it didn’t do X, or Y like Civ IV had but it brought in a lot of new players. GalCiv III has done a good job welcoming a lot of new players into the GalCiv universe. 2016 is going to add a kick ass expansion (target release date February) and follow that up with a lot of updates to refine and improve the GalCiv III universe. But it won’t make sense to do another big expansion after February since all the 4Xs are coming out.
What should be in the base game versus some future expandalone?
Let me walk you through the things I think GalCiv III needs and how we want to get these things to you.
First off, Steam now supports upgrading to expandalones. This is a big deal because it means we can make a GalCiv III: X that is major game change but let people upgrade to it very inexpensively. In the old days, you’d have to “rebuy” the game. It also lets use do universal DLC which means that all the DLC you would buy for III will work on all versions of GalCiv III. As a gamer, that’ s a pretty big deal.
What we have decided going forward is that any really major changes will have to go into an expandalone. We had a pretty serious bit of pushback with the per-planet production wheel and we don’t want to go through that again. The per planet production wheel is a bad game design. We allow players to still get to it through a racial trait but personally, I’d rather see it die. But I understand players who feel attached to it.
But now there’s a lot of fear about making game changes that I think are objectively good. Let me give you an example:
In GalCiv II, I made it so that ship components used X + Y% of hull size space. Thus, an engine might use 3 units of space but also use 5% of the max hull space. This meant , no matter what you were very limited in how many engines you could have. GalCiv III doesn’t have the Y% and thus, inevitable, we have people designing ships that can move 73 moves which breaks the game balance. Do we bring back the Y%? Well, you know what will happen when/if we do. There will be angry people down-voting us on Steam. And to be candid, a game’s review score determines how often Steam will promote it. When we got rid of the per planet wheel, several people gave GalCiv III a negative review on Steam which hurts us even though we suspect most people were glad it was gone.
So on the one hand, making engines and sensors consume consume a % of hull space will make the game objectively better. But on the other hand, if we do it, we’ll upset some people who like having ships that can move 73 moves and some of them will give us negative Steam reviews which will in turn cost us a lot of future sales.
Let’s talk about the future
GalCiv III remains the first and only 4th generate 4X. All the other games out there are still 3rd generation (32-bit, DirectX 9c, single core design). Eventually, everyone will have to move to 4th generation. This was painful for us since we lost a decade of legacy code. But it’s something every franchise has to do sooner or later. So we’re in a good position for growing it into the future. It’ll just be a question of whether the fan base will stick with us or whether we’ll all great fractured between MOO, Stellaris, ES2 or whether Civ VI will annihilate them all.
Regardless, what I do know is that there are certain key ingredients on our road-map that I want to share with you guys:
These are intentionally vague so read into them what you will. But the game is called Galactic Civilizations. So over the next few years there’s just a lot of stuff to keep integrating into it.
So anyway, just some thoughts.
cheers,
-brad
I get tired of having to restart the game ten times a day because it gets stuck or stutters. Then it has the cheek to as are you sure you want to quit? No actually I'd like to play but you rep getting stuck!!!!
Damn stupid iPhone auto correct
Um........about 10,000 miles to the left....and a bit lower ...
And upside down. Good thing you have grippy shoes.
The Earth is flat....
I'm living on the edge....
About climate change you know the head of the U.N. said it was political not scientific that the overall global temperature hasn't gone up in seventeen years. That is about right the weather is cooler than in the nineties at least hear, and south Dakota. Besides anyone who says that we are the cause of global warming has to explain why mars, Jupiter, and Saturn has also been warming up. Has anyone realized that when global warming started is when we came out of a miny ice age where glaciers moved 70 miles. Along with a flat earth doesn't the sun go around the earth.
Please don't contaminate this thread.
I don't want Naselus to leave. I have looked at his mods countless times and sent them over to the team. But at the same time, and this is the part that I don't think newer forum members understand: I don't have the option to just quit the forums. It is important (at least I think it is) that I go through the posts and take notes on what people want so I can pass it to the team. But it's extremely off-putting to have people cross from constructive to just plain insulting. I have a pretty high tolerance of it, but after a few months of it, it gets old.
I can see both sides of the argument here. From my personal experience as a gamer, I know how easy it is to get upset when a series or franchise you love -and have invested a lot of time and money in - takes a turn for the worse as far as parts of the fan base see it. There's one game developer I'm particularly disillusioned with, because it seems to care more about the publisher's share holders and getting huge sales than they do about the established fanbase. Money talks and all that, but it's a sad thing about the current state of the world we live in. I know Stardock is a completely different animal, which is why I respect it so much. I wish there were more smaller scale self publishing devs, and less juggernauts like EA and Ubisoft.
On the other side of the equation, I used to be a forum moderator and know from experience that there are certain people (long time posters even) who become a massive pain to deal with. I gave up my position because it just wasn't worth the time and effort for me anymore. It can be damn hard to see the diamond in the rough.
Getting back to GC3 - It's clear there's still a lot of room for improvement, but the progress made since launch is amazing, and the argument that the game will become great over a period of years makes perfect sense. I don't regret laying down the dosh to get the elite founder's edition. GC3 deserves a thumbs up review, even if you have legitimate criticisms. Note them in your written review.
i had no expectation that gal civ 3 would be released in a state as complete as gal civ 2. When you hear dlc you have to kind of know by now that means they're going to develop it as they go, more so than just regular patching. But wouldn't you rather have the game earlier and watch it develop (and have a say in how it develops) rather than have it released when 'it's ready'? I have no doubt that it's money well spent and the game will only get better over time. And in the meantime, it's not THAT bad of a game as is. I was going to wait for the first 'expansion' before I bought in thinking that it wouldn't really be polished till then. But the 50% off was too tempting so I picked it up then. It's not a bad game now in the way it plays for me. I dunno maybe the multiplayers have a higher standard but for soloing I'm having plenty of fun figuring out the new system. Haven't played gal civ 2 since ( though I will now to see what they patched today). So I feel good about my purchase and expect the game will only get cooler for years to come.
What I love about Stardock and their design teams is their honesty and transparency about the GalCivIII roadmap and the business of designing games. Brads posts are insightful, thoughtful and read as a conversation. As a founding member I still feel it was the best $100 I ever spent. Happy Holidays to the Stardock team and thanks for the update.
Time for Obama to bring Frogboy and naselus together for a beer summit!
He'd only do that after calling one of them out for doing their job properly.
It works really well in the total war series.
Or for that matter fallen enchantress
Sounds like there needs to be a game setup option for the level of combat detail so that those that like the current system can use it. I personally love it when one turn takes an hour because there's so much to do, but I totally understand why that isn't for everyone. There is also more than one way to do tactical combat. For example, Space Empires did it like a board game, BOTF had a 3D system but you gave vague tactical orders to each ship or group of ships,
Yeahhhh that's probably my biggest problem in the Total War series...I really want to play the battles, but I do way worse than the computer calculates. Guaranteed victory? Not when I'm in charge! I must be the worst general ever.
I find tactical combat irrelevant in this game. You win by deciding the attack and defence power of your ships and who to attack. You are the strategist (turn-based strategy game!), not the general/commander!
Having lots of 4X games is good. Makes everybody stay on their toes and may the best game win (lots of people will buy multiple though!) and competition/borrowing of ideas helps games become better.
Being new to the gal civ universe I can say this. I grew up on the civ series as well as space empires. I still playciv 3 from time to time, I enjoyed civ v and hated beyond earth as it felt like a clunky mod to civ v rather than a new game. Now my ol laptop doesn't actually meet the requirements to play though it does work mostly on a medium map at best, my wife is going to update me next year for my birthday thankfully.
That all being said I like how the game is, as well as the road map, updates, and expansions. I think that utilizing steam to keep your name in the ads is a wise decision, it will bring in new players and expand the playerbase as well as deveoling the game into what you envision the game to be. So to those that are not likening how quickly the updates are going, put on a helmut. The updates are coming almost monthly at a very reasonable cost so they can pay their developers to put out more updates while working on larger expansions. Believe me I wish I was able to buy the founders pack I would rebuy the full game again for it.
So to all the developers and support staff, great job, and thank you. I personally look forward to what you have in the works.
elite founders will get it automatically.
sweet!
Yeah I realized what deal this was, or I wouldn't have invested 100 bucks with a cheaper package in my face. Beyond sweet. I'm considering the other 99 dollar package to get most of stardock games. You guys rock.
Must have multiple accounts then? As you are missing a Founders Badge on this one.
Elena you don't have a badge are you sure it's registering you're an elite founder.
She has it. The forums have been acting weird when it comes to displaying badges.
Oh wait I see what you mean where is my badge. I thought I was an elite founder too the disapoi.ntment.
Wait, Civ VI is coming out?
