The minimap doesn't really show you were your units are. Only the numbered battlegroups and, of course, sectors can be identified. Finding units is a pain in the *** overall. The unit bar on the left doesn't help at all. It's too hard to recognize units. Generally speaking, keeping an overview where your units are and what kind of units you acutally look at or what units your battlegourp contains is nearly impossible.
Klicking for movement orders often doesn't work. Generally I have to klick several times to have my movement order confirmed.
The whole game so far feels like looking into a giant anthive not really knowing what's going on. It also feels like everything is moving in slow motion.
Doubleclicking should select all units of the same kind in the given viewed area. Very important!
Edit:
That said, I have fun playing it! It has a good feel about it and I like the style. I played 12 hours now and I am getting into it, slowly. Although I said it seems to be running in slow motion I like that it is not too fast paced. It could run a tad bit faster by default for my taste.
All in all, considering what you said what your goal is with Ashes, I think this is on the right track. Keep it going!
Double-click to select all of a unit type is on the to do list... you can find it here:

About the UI design for units on the left side, I agree, I have not figured the symbols out yet either...
The pace could really use some upping. That's my biggest complaint with it. The constant feeling of 'waiting'.
Cancelling unit/building production.
Reverse movement.
Formation movement.
Hard to make a different between attack move and move cursor.
*difference
To cancel units in production you have to right click on the units in the production queue above the picture of the factory and to the left of the minimap.
About the game speed, on normal I can just about keep up with the game so it seems right to me. After I get fluent with the interface I could see going a notch higher, but not until then. Also, in my opinion we are going to need to wait until unit teleport gets in the game to truly evaluate the speed, as that kind of mechanism serves to speed things up.
We need health bars, and to be able to toggle health bars
1. in 1920by 1080 resolution alt-tabbing out to look at a website ( such as this one or the quick start guide) will cause everything but the unit bar to vanish - no interactive way to build except with hotkeys.
2. alt-tabbing out at any point places the screen off center and down to the right so that it cannot be exited nor interacted with - one must exit with cntrl-alt-delete method.

Did anybody else experience this (?): in the beginning of a game you can pan the view completely free, all directions (even underground) by pressing the middle mouse button and moving the mouse. Later on in the game pressing the middle mouse button only turns the view in one dimension.
Are you sure you weren't hitting shift combined with the middle mouse button? Shift+middle click allows you to change your perspective.
You don't need to alt-tab, just pressing the windows keys brings up the task bar. The game is actually runing in a window.
It's strange, sometimes I have to press space and middle mouse button in order to have full view control sometimes not. It definitely changes later in the game. Can't change view but zoom and rotate.
