OK, I've beat the game multiple times on normal, so I just bumped the difficulty level up to "challenging", and now I can't seem to build an empire worth a crap and I'm guessing it's because I don't fully understand how population works. On "normal" I absolutely crushed everyone, no problem! My empire got 6 times powerful as all other races combined by the third age. So, I bumped the difficulty up a notch and now I can't even compete on empire strength. Whenever I run into another empire on an insane map they are 200% to 300% more powerful than I am and, of course, they immediately attack me and then it's a slow slide to defeat. I'd at LEAST like to be able to match my first opponent in empire strength but can't seem to figure out how to get there! It always seemed to be the Alterians were way out front when playing on Normal, so I took a close look at their racial bonuses and I saw they were "fast" (fast expansion), clever etc, so I matched a couple of their traits to my custom race. Here's what I've tried so far:1) Given my custom race bonuses to speed, research and production. (expand quickly)2) Got planetary improvement immediately so I can start putting xeno farms out quick3) Tweaked my planet build queues to place priority on xeno farming, research and production (in that order)Typical early game planet build queue:Xeno FarmFactoryResearch LaboratoryFactoryResearch LaboratoryFactory(wash, rinse repeat)4) Put a xeno farm on every planet5) Used max speed to speed up early empire expansion/conquest6) Placed heavy priority on colonization tech trees to keep research and production out front of everything else7) Used "rush build" as much as humanly possible in early game to speed up expansion by pumpiing out colonizers and constructors8) Doing manual moves on all exploring ships in order to make exploration efficient.Yes, I put a lot of pirate bases on the map (I think I picked "common" for pirate bases) and that seriously hinders my expansion because I have to avoid them until I can start dumping points into military in order to fight back, but I would assume that the AI has to do the same thing, right?Anyway, it's obvious that I am doing something terribly wrong here, probably with my planet management, so if anyone has any tips or tricks to at least MATCH what the AI is doing so that it's a fair fight, I would be most appreciative! Thanks!NOTES:Map Size - InsaneDifficulty - ChallengingNumber of Opponents - 10 major race (2 custom), abundant minor factions
Just like china!
Yup.
On the other hand, I think the American markets rally tomorrow. Buying in the morning.
Well, I incorporated all of these tips and tricks, mainly changing production management on planets and massive colony ship rush, and I WON (on conquest/alliance victory conditions)!Nice! Thanks everyone! Now, the good news and the bad news. The good news is that by the time I got attacked by the second most powerful civilization, I was able to bring up my military research fast enough to fend them off (I lost 4 planets, but got them all back +2 before ending war). So, I was ready for the attack this time. The BAD news is that once I fended off the attack and switched back to expansion mode, none of the OTHER civilizations appeared to be doing anything! I was at about 2200 strength, the next highest was 750, and the lowest was 37. 37?! It's like they weren't even trying! There were vast swathes of space just empty, ready for me to colonize. It was like 300, 200, 125, 75, 49, 37 for the other civs.No fun in that!I fully expected to be confronted by a FULL universe with every faction sharing common borders, but nothing was further from the truth. Looks like I need to up the difficulty!
Turn up the difficulty and make the map more dense if you want it to feel full. Either add a lot more AIs or turn down the size quite a bit,
This game is frustrating the bejeezuz out of me. Even on easy I get squashed. I expand as fast as I can, build ships as fast as I can, and still get squashed. Seeing as I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I can't change the gameplay to suit. I may not (obviously) be the best player, but I'm no simpleton either. Anyone that says the AI doesn't cheat is simply telling a load of old codswallop.
Edit: sorry bout the thread necro, just this was the 1st google hit.
@ Bruce Sim.
I don't find it difficult to crush the AI's on Incredible and only Godlike provides me a real challenge (am not going after alliance victory). There are certainly better players than me as well.
So, assuming you have the complete game; all the DLC and 1.16 opt in, please start a brand new thread and detail your starting galaxy setup and I'll help you. I expect others will also provide input to that new thread.
If you're getting clobbered on Easy, I presume the AI's are clearly stronger than you. I suspect that you're doing many things non-optimally and that you could learn to get MUCH better starts to the game in the first 20 or so turns.
In the mean time, I suggest watching a couple Lets Plays on You Tube.
.. neilkaz ..
Hehe, after reading this thread and a couple others I did find two problems with my setup.
1: building generalist planets instead of specialist.
2: Using the Altarian tree, which a lot of people seem to think is the worst in the game.
Started a game with synthetic species using the Thalian tree and specialist planets. OMG what a difference that makes.
