KNOWN ISSUES and USE1) If you use this mod for your own ships/races/etc. a brief credit to this mod is appreciated. 2) Turn ship-trails off, I use engines as parts in turrets and hulls, it can be distracting.3) If you experience performance issues, it is most likely the result of the heavy use of animations in any/all of my ship models, or otherwise GC3's general issues. If you experience issues, I recommend either playing with less total races, less races utilizing the ship sets, or otherwise upgrading your PC. 4) Under no circumstances may you upload any of these ship designs or factions to Steam.THANK YOUPlease reach out and report any glitches/bugs, any ships with clipping or other issues. Also it would be great, if you end up adding to the designs using the custom components, for you to share them with the community! Please credit the mod if you do!Special thanks to: Horemvore for his helpful attitude and Diplomacy UI mod!R3bel02 for one of his logos. Go here: http://www.nexusmods.com/galacticcivilizations3/mods/18/?
Gauntlet, why do we need to install some of the files in the main game folder?
Stubborn as I am, I installed everything into the my games folder and everything seems to be working, at least as far as non-player factions are concerned.
Oh my!
A few versions back, it was required to move the designs into the main game folder in order for the ship def file to read them... perhaps this has changed! I'll check it out now.
You seem to be correct! Damn I'll have to make a new video lol
Nice catch!
TBH I wondered about that when I installed it but figured you would know where the files needed to go better than I would and besides its not like you were overwriting existing files at all so no harm no foul.
True, but I prefer to keep my base game folder as clean as possible (even though the naming scheme made it easy to separate them from the base game files).
I vaguely remembered reading a post that the 1.1 patch would allow designs to be properly used from the user folder. That's why I tried.
Been having a fiddle under the hood regarding sample ships not showing in the new game screen and I've made some discoveries.
I did try a startup folder in ...\My Games\GalCiv3\Designs but as of yet that does not work. Most of your DisplaySampleObjGfxConfig values need updating.
Oh man! Excellent! Thank you!
I should have released sooner, you guys are helping so much lol
Hey guys!
If anyone has some feedback on the races, the ships/etc. now is the time... I'm working on another update. Does anyone think a race is lame/cool/broken/not good enough, etc. Typos... Anything.
The update should include:
1) New installation instructions.
2) The preview ship fix (thank you)
3) One new race/ship set.
Is anybody finding the strategic game lagging with this mod.Is it the floating ship movement that is causing it I wonder.
My game lags too Ashbery, I assumed it was to do with the many parts the ships were made up of, it seemed to be associated with loading the graphics for the ships.
I played a game with the mod the other day for quite a while and saved but when I try to load that save now the game just crashes to desktop, anyone else getting that problem? I tried updating to 1.1 of the mod to see if that resolved it but it still crashes.
This is not really a big deal but I wondered if you knew that your ship parts do not upload to Steam.
Steam only uploads templates now so I tried to upload a ship that included some of your turret parts. Steam stripped all of them.
Like I said not a big deal just FYI.
Hi Gauntlet, I have been thinking about trying to build a ship set in a style of an ancient humanoid race based on a style of futuristic, imperial opulence. I am thinking of the Dune style ships and/or the ships in Jupiter Ascending. The ships would not necessarily be in in good taste but built by a race that is so wealthy and advanced they can indulge any style whim that they wish, regardless of functionality.
I was wondering if you could give me some ideas on whether or not the ship designer can craft a set like that and possibly you might build a sample of such a ship to give me some ideas.
When I had the 0 designs in the game it crashed after the map was made.
After getting rid of those 0 designs the Fugar started fine. Just no ship in the appearance screen.
Sorry I'm not following you? 0 designs? How do I get rid of them?
I think he is referring to the template designs... which of course, without, this mod's custom race ship sets will all break.
@ForesterSOF what are the specs of your PC?
I'll have to add on a performance warning. I've never had an issue... but I have a pretty nice PC
@Franco FX, thanks! Good to know! I definitely think you can get a ship set in the style you are looking for, using a lot of the Altarian pieces especially. I'd take a look through the ship design thread, lots of goodies there. Also, a lot will depend on the textures and styles you use.
Well aren't you special . Just joking, for the amazing work you do. you both need and deserve one.
Texture may be the problem look at this Harkonnen ship. I scaled it down for the forum but you can see it is all about texture.
I am not particularly creative and I am klutzy with the designer tools, so I'm not sure I am up to it. I have managed to build a few that are middlin popular on the Steam Workshop, but they were pretty standard Star Warsy - Star Trekky stuff, Tie Fighters and such. This one appears to be out of my league.
Hrm looks doable, maybe a combination of Altarian and Thalan parts, with the right color scheme surface and materials I think you can make something pretty close. Keep in mind all things considered given the type of tools we have to work with close it pretty damn good.
I LOVE the mod. I'm hyped for the next update too.
I planned to say what my favourite race was, but to be honest I can't decide. Every time I think I've made my mind up I see something different.
The new Terrans are pretty cool, they have this rough edge... Their style is so desperate, yet not 'poor', sort of verging on 'brutal' if anything. I think the Zerhan are the most unique though, they're as recognisable as when Iconians were first brought into the game
I don't think I can give any useful feedback aside keeping going with the truly alien designs... But I do have a question. After my custom race/style displayed wrong in the game I've been using yours for inspiration, and I must ask what all those 'blank' Def mod XMLs are for. They're not actually blank, just seem to link things that don't exist together.
Plan to do a huge test with all your races running in the next week or two and then get my own factions done - unfortunately they do consist of yet another human faction but they are almost finished lol!
Think its all great work and an inspiration to aspiring modders - it has even converted friends of mine to actually play the game and try their hand!
Keep it up!
Hey there!
The "blank" xmls, support the "blank" ship sets. These ship sets set all the standard designs as "AI ONLY" so that you never see a default design when playing, and yet, the AI will still utilize them. I tend to make all of my designs whilst playing, from scratch, because the defaults are pretty sub-optimal.
So its merely for convenience for those who don't want the defaults in their way and are tired of obsoleting stuff.
And thank you, I'm really happy you are enjoying it! in terms of designs, you'll be happy to see the next sets... they are the "novelty" styles of ships... kinda gimmicky, but cool to have... we will have some robo-bug ships, truly organic space-squids, and living crystal ships soon!
The Zerhan are cool, I was a little lazy and one day will revisit them to add more unique hulls for their Huges and such, but I'm very happy with their colors and designs. My Terrans are not GOOD GUYS in my universe, so the "brutal" comment makes me happy
I can't pick a favorite either lol!
@franco fx
That design or similar styles is certainly possible. Its not really my forte though, my ships tend to be "solid" I just naturally avoid ... frailness...? Anywho here would be my advice:
1) First, figure out what the engines are going to be. All ships in a set, should generally have the same overall engine style... it helps tie them together and makes mass-design production faster.
2) Design your turrets/weapon systems as custom components. Its best to do this first, so that your subsequent designs know what things to anticipate mounting, and their shape. I didn't do this with most of my sets and I learned the hard way... which led to some ships have some not-very impressive weapons. I did this perfectly for the Kirani and it really stands out.
3) I would stick to Altarian and thalan parts, but use the various Iconian tentacles and sink them into the hull to create "filigree". Will not be easy, but should work well.
4) I would use the same colors/textures that I used for the Jun-Jilar, would get you that nice metallic purple that this image has.
5) Remember, that you should NEVER base a ship part off of a custom part. Always put down a normal simple central part. Never attach anything to a custom part if you will be scaling the custom part.
6) For that simple, 1st part, not a bad idea to make that part a central piece that will be a theme of the hulls in general.
Thanks for the advice Gauntlet. I frankly doubt that I am up to it with the tools available. It seems that pronounced texture and engraving is key to the designs that I have in mind. The ship building tools in the game are great and some nice texture is available but not to the extent of the pictured ship.
I looked through the posted designs and one of the better designs other than yours was from Gizmo..., who said that he invests at least 12 hours into his designs. Obviously that kind of effort pays off, but I am not sure I am willing to spend that kind of time on 1 ship. Most of my stuff is put together in 2-3 hours at most.
Ok...
Well, for the most part, most of my ships take 3 hours, and variants with different turrets only a half hour each tops. Once you have a core set, it goes fast. Now, as for comparing yourself to Gizmo...
Yeah, even I don't want to look too closely at those ships, they are incredible and make me jealous lol. I console myself (in my puddle of envious tears) by telling myself "I can't work that long on each ship, I have a schedule to keep! I have HUNDREDS of more ships to make!"
Its important to lie to oneself, staring at the truth (that there is always someone better than you, by a large margin, and that you are a speck of meat in a otherwise terrible existence) is not a good motivator.
Start small, build up, it will take time, but you don't have to sell your soul to each model.
I mean, I'll witness, and guarantee your journey to Valhalla (Mad Max joke).
New vid... doing a playthrough video. Advice welcome.
