First I love Stardock and hope they keep making/supporting games.
That being said I'm getting pretty tired of being a beta tester when I paid full price for a full game and the version says 1.0 and there's no way this should be 1.0
Here's a few things (or missing things) that really make it feel like an incomplete game. I just ask myself over and over "why can't I do this? I've done this in every other 4X game I've played and there's no way I'm the only one."
1)No Edit Race Option
Okay I know this is a little thing, but if i want to tweak something on a custom race I can only copy, make the changes and then delete the old one? Why is there no edit option! Why!
2)No Research Costs Displayed-only how many turns.
Don't assume you know what I want done with the data and convert it for me, if I want it converted I'll do the math. Like your phone telling you how long ago the person called instead of when they called. I think this is a really big thing, so big I went over and over the options panel convinced I just had to change some setting. So there's no way to know how much research overspending you're doing every time you complete a project. Much more importantly when you spend those precious ideology points in benevolence that give you tons of research points you have no idea how many of them are going to disappear after the only project you had selected (see #3) that had 1 turn to complete is completed.
3)No Research Queue
First of all don't try and tell me you can just because if the last thing you selected when you exited research just so happened to be the next thing on the tech tree and you just so happened to want the optimization on the top (cause that's what you're gonna get!) because it's not the same as a research queue. There's no list on the top right, just the one project. So even if the game's creators want the game mechanic of overspending and not allow research points to carry into the next project (which is a stupid mechanic if you ask me, and they probably don't want it) it would still be nice to plan the order of the projects and not be forced to go to the research page after each completion. Not to mention the latter part of #2 would be fixed if you could simply queue research projects. Seriously why can't you queue research! Why!
4)Optimizations obtained via diplomacy lock you in.
I'm pretty sure this one's an official bug (as opposed to options/features that any sane person should expect in a non-beta game), I've seen other posts complaining about it. So if you obtain an optimization via diplomacy after you've already chosen/researched one for yourself s'all good and you get the benefits of both. However if you obtain it (either by bargaining or as a gift from a race that likes you) before you've done it for yourself the game assumes that's what you did for yourself, and now you can't do another. You get the "optimization has already been chosen" or whatever it says tool-tip.
Don't piss on me and tell me it's raining. The game's UI is not "clean". It's a mess across the board. At it's best it's serviceable and most of the time the level of frustration of working with the UI doesn't overwhelm the underlying quality of the game. I am used to the finicky scrolling and mouse-overs and all the other broken stuff, but I don't have to like it.
Its quite grungy. Remind's me of Rome 2 on launch, which is not a good comparison. I'd really like a left/right tab on my shipyards the same as colonies,. I have all of the yards shut down most of the time, so activating and queuing builds takes for ever with 5 yards all over the place.
The rest I'm not to fussed about as it its a turn based game. but it gets really grindy and tedious late game. If I could hot key up screens for ships, colonies and planets. I really want to know which ships are in which groups. Putting a frame around each fleet would be excellent.
Being able to group planets geographically would also be nice. As has been said, its a nice enough game, but the interface is kinda awful at the moment.
Maybe its your own leakage dripping down you leg. The game has some problems but the UI really is not one of them.
Your right, i played rome2 on launch and there is no comparison
At least we agree on one thing, this is bad
1,2, &3 maybe, but certainly not game breaking
I had Problem #4 (research spec not selectable after you trade one) and its really annoying. I hope this can be fixed.
Maybe this has been mentioned already, but the list of colonies unsort themselves when you double click to go to one. Govern -> Colonies, then sort, and double click to go to a specific colony. When you come back, your colonies are unsorted again. Not real great for when I'm trying to sort my colonies by manufacturing, research or wealth, and then go down the list and manage all of one type.
No cost of research projects displayed?
Seriously wtf is the point of being able to see and meticulously adjust how many research points each colony produces if there's no way of knowing the costs?
Could you imagine going to a car dealership, asking how much for a car, and the salesman saying "you have to work for 30 more days for this car". I went to my boss and got a raise! "Now you have to work 25 more days for this car". Ok..huff puff...I ran to my boss and got overtime on the weekends..."Now you have to work 17 more days for this car". Just tell me how much it friggin costs!
Could you imagine how upset the community would be if it was this way for manufacturing ships? Research is just as important IMO (I mean it's in the govern triagle with mfg. and finance)
I can't believe I'm the only one making noise about this!
Because we know it's coming, and we know that because it's Stardock. If you look at the most recent patch, your #1 issue is getting fixed. The rest will come. Be patient. More importantly, be polite. The rest of us ask about our issues too, but we don't act like it's the end of the world, we ask if it's a priority and if there's a fix in the works. If you want an answer that badly, ask a question during a friday dev stream. They listen to those and answer those.
Careful, with language like that you might end up getting banned.
Rule #1 of commenting on Stardock's boards, always use the sandwich method! Hey guys! Love the game, best GalCiv ever! but the UI design is like being dragged over hot coals. Also this game is way better than Civ5.
