I have to say I´m really disappointed with your game so far, main new feature, multiplayer, is very badly implemented, no LAN, no hotseat, no turn time limit, simultaneous turns, disable animations or any other server settings, other than that, my hopes for improved combat mechanics were unfulfilled, game also seem to be badly optimized (loading screen is like 2-3 minutes on PC with 16 GB RAM) and I had to solve missing fonts problem when I tried to play it. I believe you will improve it with pacthes in the future, but initial impression is very bad and I will not recommend this game to any of my friends, bad job so far, get it better
bye

To the first point, part of the reason is that 4x games have increased in complexity over time, and so AI's have fallen behind. The more things to do in a game...the more things for the AI to mess up.
To the second, the problem with this is the market. The reality is, the 4x market is a single player market. The vast majority of people that play 4x will never play against a human. It would be very interesting to see someone go for the "pure MP 4x experience" and really optimize a game around it. But economically its a tough sell.
Problem is is that many of us don't want to deal with all the issue of playing against people. Scheduling, settings, etc. can be a hassle. Yes, a human will be better than an AI until we can put in an AI true ingenuity that is found in humans but humans have their own issues. Such advice is left on the table.
Yes... and trying to find a human opponent that like to use the same mods as you do and the schedule time to play and agree with which house rules you like to play the game... what a nightmare...
I can't name a single 4x game I have played the last ten years I have played with the original none modded rule set other than maybe my first try, more or less. In GalCiv3 I jumped right in to playing on an insane map from day one... this does not go well in hand with MP either.
Yes, sometimes finding other people can be problematic, but that's not exactly a game issue, it's a person issue. There are plenty of us who work full time (I work 12 hour shifts, (3/12's) and still make the effort.
I promise, playing against people is worth the effort.
Not even referring to GC3 specifically- AI is generally garbage, in nearly every game. That's why AI difficulties are always setup to provide massive bonuses to the AI. It's the only way to make them even remotely capable of playing against a person.
Complain about anything else you want to about a game- that's fair, but complaining the garbage AI isn't quite up to par with some other garbage AI you've played is just baffling to me. Even more so when you consider the amount of development time that will be shoveled into a garbage chute to make said garbage AI slightly less garbage. There's obviously some glaring issues sometimes, but most of the time even a thousand hours of work will never make the AI more than absolute garbage.
Maybe I have a unique perspective on it since I have friends who've worked on RTS AI, and have listened to them talk about how borderline improbable it is to make an AI thats even semi decent :/
Ultimately, you can't just dismiss "play with people" because it's inconvenient for you. It's a perfectly legitimate option that many people do every day. You should make the effort to participate, which is why I even suggested it to begin with. There's far too many good things about this game (and many others of similar genre) to pass up purely because of the AI.
I'm sorry but for many people it is NOT an option unless you want to play on a smaller map and abuse min/max strategies or play with a plethora of house rules that you agree on. Finding the right set of people to do this is neigh impossible, let alone schedule time for it with work, training and family obligations. That is why these types of games must have a decent amount of resources going into making a decent AI. I have tried MP a couple of times in other 4x games, it simply don't work for me. My time available to play computer games are just too irregular and I like campaigns on epic scale settings whenever I play...
Unfortunately GalCiv have a bit too many OP and outright broken mechanics which make the AI super weak so you still need to play the game with lots of house rules to be even remotely challenged. But you can play the AI even on Normal if you choose not to min/max or abuse broken game mechanics.
While he doesn`t need to be half as offensive as he is (maybe he`s pretending to be his avatar?), he`s right about the SSD. There is absolutely no point in defragging an SSD ever. I had a friend like you who was also defragging nuts, I had to tell him to stop as well. Just don`t do it on an SSD. My game takes about maybe 10 seconds and I have a normal harddrive, but plenty of Ram and a good cpu (i5). Actually my cpu is middling now. So it`s very likely your pc needs upgrading.
p.s. I believe the next 1.02 patch will speed up the start times. So maybe wait till then?
That has never been a problem for me. I have a set of RW friends that play and we all make sure we have the same mods. Not a hassel at all. And I do wish that all 4X games had MP as long as it can use the entire SP game and not a dumb down version of the game.
EVERY game should have a good AI for it because not everyone wants to play Online or versus Human opponents. This will always be true.
Neither do I think it smart to give up trying to make a great AI because we haven`t managed one yet. AI understanding is increasing all the time, and it`s only a matter of time before we will see something that can truely and fairly give a human player a challenge without the need to use bonuses.
Then I await the complaints that the AI is too smart!
My only real complaint about this is the fact that, from the perspective of someone who predominantly plays 4X/Strategy games against living people and not AI, I've always felt the AI in *every game* since the 80's has had serious deficiencies, and has essentially never improved.Does this one have -worse- deficiencies? Not even sure, frankly. Certainly not worse than other 4X games I've played recently. Some of the AI's in Endless Legend can't even function properly/put up a proper military without having massive cheats turned on.Take my advice: don't worry about the AI and play against people. People will always be better opponents. These games will get a lot better if we can move past trying to make a shitty AI into a less-shitty AI and focus purely on game/gameplay design and functionality. To that end, I really enjoy GalCiv 3 so far. I've had very few serious issues in multiplayer- launch day it was pretty crashy, over the past few days it's mostly been just small fixable bugs.
95% of players of a 4X game never touches multiplayer. I would prefer Stardock caters to the dominant demographic.
I agree they should always strive to make a better AI. I like both AI as well as MP which is why I always want both in the same game (with no dumbing down or 'balances')
When I play the 4X with MP we always play with the AI too and use the max AI possible. It makes for a great game.
I however would not. MP in GC3 does not have to be at odds with SP. Just open up the entire SP to Human players and give us password protection. We don't need 'balances' and such. But we do want the game stable. There are a lot more of us out here that play both SP and MP than you give us credit for.
It took Stardock a while to get the AI right on both the previous civs, I'm more than willing to see what happens either with them or the modders. I wouldn't play this kind of game multiplayer even if I was getting paid to do so. I'll enjoy what they produced and play against gifted. It certainly is not bug free, but it is no worse and actually better than many games I have played of late.

Why does everyone think I defrag for a living? I've done it once. once. and to prove the point to the original guy that defraging does nothing. Does no one read the entire thread?
but this guy was proposing defraging in case of a normal disc
at least, I get the impression that "HD" refers to a normal hard disc... and there, defragmentation surely can make a difference.
Nevermind. We have better things to do like kill things in space.
I'm not sure what this thread is about anymore but if someone wants to make a new post about AI stuff or things they want it would be my pleasure to check it out.
People in my office has started to call you The Defragger. Hey if you play your cards right you may get a made for TV movie made about you.
I came here to fuck biotches and defrag SSDs, and you're all out of biotches.
I agree with the multiplayer part... But even the simultaneous turn taking may be a good call since you can start moving ships/shipyards WITHIN your turn.
The loading problem I haven't found... I once generated an Insane size map with 10 factions and common minorfactions within about 20 seconds. 8GB RAM with other apps open.
Plus I haven't seen a font problem since like January.
Buuuut you still raise a few good points. I hope Stardock work on these so more people can enjoy the game.
Ok, let's start a different, better named thread that isn't about SSD defragging. Everyone knows that SSD needs to be defragged daily in order for the electrons to stay excited.
