I"m good and irked at the moment; my buddy and I just finished discussing this in detail, so I've confirmed I'm not the only one that feels this way.1) Pirates. What the #$%(. No rules for pirates? No supply? No cost? Just appear in the middle of nowhere and start raiding? This is "raging barbarians" from Civ 5, and we hate it. I don't want to DISABLE pirates, I want them to play by THE SAME RULES AS I DO. They should require a supply planet, they should have maintenance, they should have tech limitations, etc. Where are they getting their research from? That non-existent planet? The same goes for the AI, and the minors.Grrr.2) Ideology. Wow did you screw this up. 220 turns in, and I've got my first and second ideology picks. Just wow. Two hundred and twenty turns, with Galactic events on Abundant. Apparently Stardock and I use a completely different dictionary, because words like "abundant" and "occasional" mean completely different things when I say them.3) Shipyards. Tripled the price? So, not only are we no longer allowed to build defenders on our actual planets, because NOBODY builds actual space ships in atmosphere... star wars, star trek, pick your poison, canon be damned... but any hope of actual defense is now slow as @#$*, as you either get to take a bloody ETERNITY building it, or send some constructors through the gauntlet of pirates.... good thing we build build BUILD constructors, right?4) Carriers. So, apparently the answer to something being useful, is to make it worthless. Niiiice. Quadruple the cost of the mods, plus make them even weaker than before? Now a single carrier can't take out a relatively-equal pirate fleet, or much of anything, for that matter.
5) Trading. I have to wait? Why? Is there a traffic controller of the Universe, some God-figure, telling me I can't run a red light? Who is it precisely that dictates policy to me, the Space Emperor? Why can't I tell this @#$@ to go #$%^ himself?6) AI. I personally find it offensive that the AI is at full blast at normal, and gets free stuff handed to them to make them harder, instead of playing at "average" at normal, with a learning curve, and getting smarter as you ramp the AI. Perfect Dark, UT2k4, Descent Free Space, all had learning AI that would figure out your playstyle, and use it against you. Aren't we supposed to have improved since waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back then?Ok, I feel better.I'm likely going to put this on ice for a bit, til some patches come out, because, at this point, this is just infuriating, after what I was playing just a bit back. Not enjoying the "improvements".
FTR, there's both a Racial Ability and a technology that gives every planet a free squadron of defending fighters, so what you're asking for is certainly doable in the current game right now. If you want defenders that badly, go get them! It makes perfect sense that not every brand new colony would be capable of funding their own defense at the outset.
Also, Pirates are getting their technology by stealing it from other people. You know, like real pirates do. They don't build shit, they steal shit and use that shit to steal other shit, then trade each other for better shit and put it all together into a bigger shit that goes out and steals more shit. That's why they're pirates and not a civilization that has to research things! Playing by the rules is literally the opposite of what pirates are supposed to do.
I get that you like to play tall, but unfortunately for you, one of the X in Space 4X, the genre, is Expand. Would I like there to be the means to play the game Tall instead of Wide? Sure. But there isn't, because this isn't Civ 5, the game you so despise. Ironically, Tall is considered the strongest way to play Civ V, so maybe it would be more up your alley.
PS, If you were a Founder, and paid your whole hundred bucks literally years ago, why didn't you bring all this up back in Alpha and Beta? Back when it wasn't too late to make design decisions? It's less than a day from release now. Even if the devs took your feedback to heart, it is TOO LATE to make any fundamental changes. So, sorry OP, this one's still on you. You had your chance a long time ago, and you blew it. Things I brought up in early Beta were added to the game by the devs. That could have been your experience too. That's what your hundred bucks was really buying. If you didn't use it, well that sucks, but it's way too late now.
I think it is realistic. The pirates represent organized crime in the Galaxy and their ships attacking your ships is just the visible part of it. Just like the pirates at the horn of africa are just the visible part of organized piracy or like the drug dealer in downtown is just the visible part of organized drug dealing. But organized crime has a vast invisible part hidden in normal society. So it is entirely realistic that pirates in Gal Civ recieve their ships and technological knowledge from "dark channels" within the different civilizations. Think about it, every planet has billions of people on it - is it really so unrealistic that there is a hidden mafia funding pirates und giving them technology? One could argue, that the decay of production from the planet to the shipyards is in part caused by such criminals.
Even criminal research labs are not that far fetched. In reality there is research done for new drugs and ways to smuggle them by the drug mafia. Cyber criminals do research how to abuse computer systems.
I don't think your input is ignored. However, Stardock can't taylor the game to everyone own personal liking, so there will always be some things you don't like about it. Also the game just hits the official release, it can't be perfect yet.
Again sorry your not enjoying the game. Perhaps you would be best served to find a different game to play? I can understand shelling out money for a game that doesnt meet your desires. I do it all the time. Its a bummer. That being said I still think this title is great and has ample room to grow. I would suggest that EVERYONE just calm down. There is no need to attack other players based on opinions.. Yeah I know thats a tall order. This is a game. Enjoy it or don't, feel free to share your opinion. Feel free to counter point others comments, but lets do so in a rational mature manner. Pretend your in the UP or something. Maybe research a little diplomacy? BTW just won a game in 51 turns! I feel like a pro lol.
