Have been playing this a bit today and its ok. Was wondering if anyone thinks that Sid is trying to steal some of Stardock's thunder with this, but since its prolly not as deep as GC III, I think they wont. Granted I like to play games, so i enjoy a good game, and so far its not bad. Only played a few hours so far, but wanted to know what anyone else might think about it.
I personally think we're witnessing the decline of Firaxis' quality and it's probably a direct result of 2K's bullshi!. Beyond Earth was a major step backwards and it hasn't become much better in the six months since its release. Starships is a giant missed opportunity and is already averaging around 50% on Steam.
Ouch.
Brad should buy them and right the...
Game feels way too basic for me. But I wouldn't say that it's a bad game because it does what it does in a successful way. It's just underwhelming, lacking ambition, stale. That it was made straight-to-app doesn't help me when I'm playing on PC.
I haven't played it but yes, I think Firaxis have hit a dry spell. When there was no real follow-up to XCOM: EW I thought, okay this is bad. Since then I've heard nothing good about their games.
Civ has been done to death, quite frankly. Maybe the next instalment should focus on crypts, mausoleums and raising an undead horde. You could call it Necropolization.
Well you also have to remember that Sid didn't actually design his best games....Sid founded Microprose back in the day. His first projects were flight sims like F-19 Stealth fighter.
He made Civ 1 and Civ2... but Alpha Centari was actually designed and programmed by Chris Reynolds... Sid is basically the computer game version of Walt Disney. He came up with some really ground breaking ideas... and now his name means more than the product it is attached to.
Think you mean Brian Reynolds, and IIRC Brian actually did the design on Civ2 as well as SMAC.
lol yes yes I do. at least I got the last name correct.
Stardock has nothing to fear from Sid Meirer's Starships game.
EDIT: Removed review.
Well I'm glad you settled that for them.
Anyway, my understanding was that Starships was supposed to play more like XCOM than it was supposed to play like Civilization, even though it's borrowing from the Civ BE universe.
Whether it succeeded or failed to do that, or to be entertaining I won't comment, but let's try to not compare it to things it's not even trying to be, like GC3 or Civ.

The point of my post was this so called pc game should not have even been released as a stand alone pc game it should have been DLC for SMBE.
As I have played it more im not a fan...its...i dunno...boring and dull. I also didnt enjoy Sid Beyond Earth as much as I had hoped I would as it is just lacking. Ive loved all the Civs with 4 and 5 being the ones i played alot. Now im a bit worried and I see that others are seeing the same thing. Oh well, what can ya do...I guess just play GC III!!
I don't have the game and nor do I intend to buy it but one of the reviews above this post keeps comparing it to a Civ game in several ways. This is a mistake, it should be reviewed for what it is. It is not a AAA game, and nor is is priced like one and just because it has Sid's name on it it shouldn't lose points if it doesn't play like the Civ games. Criticising it is fine and it may be a dull game etc. but do it in the correct context.
(I have enjoyed the first 4 civ games but didn't like Civ V and won't get Beyond Earth for being too similar to it)
I just hope Civ VI gets things back on track ha.
