Will Start10 be a free upgrade for the users who paid for Start8?
There are other differences like Start10 supports the blur in the menu on Windows 10 which the Win10 menu has along with changes to handle some taskbar changes and some OS theme changes.
You are free to continue to use Start8 on Win10 if you wish as we are not blocking the use of it in anyway.
I'm being told that the Start 10 beta is a 30 day trial. Yet here I was told 10 days. Which is it?
I will buy Start10 IF I decide to upgrade but there are many factors affecting that decision. One of them is that Start8 causes a mess for the taskbar in Win 10 (at least I think it is Start8 ...surely what I have as a taskbar is not what Microsoft intends) and, now I have learned, the problems (dimming of the screen and tablet display rather than desktop) I am having with switching to Metro on Win10 on the latest fast ring build are due to Start8.
Upgrading is not a "slam dunk" for me. Things like how the taskbar behaves in Windows 10, whether or not I will be able to use IE or Edge browsers since I use a local proxy and I am told NO local proxies allowed on Edge...and Windowblinds...it is only partially working and will not use Verdana Bold for Windows Explorer. If I can't have that then I will have to stay with Windows 8 where Windowblinds bolds all text including Windows Explorer and uses MY font of choice for Windows...Verdana bold. I'd like to have a chance to see how BOTH Stardock programs work with Win 10 BEFORE release time of Win 10 as then how do I test them after release of Win 10? I THINK the Windows Insider program will continue (so I could test there on a virtual machine once there is a Windowblinds for Win 10) but I am not sure about that. I feel frustrated.
Anyhow, is the trial for Start10 one month or 10 days?

I just bought the $3.99 upgrade without thinking, I don't even have Windows 10 installed yet. Eventually I'll have Windows 10 and I'll need Start10. I have used Start8 so much that I didn't care if I had to pay for the upgrade, just support their hard work, they are always updating the software. If you don't want to pay for it don't complain use another alternative then.
I pretty sure you can just be a object desktop subscriber and get more benefits.im sure they have a lot of things that will come out,hopefully on release.i have my option to renew for 30 bucks but I'm making sure if its a go ahead that by doing so I will be switched to object desktop for windows 10 and there is actually a big list that will be ready for rtm.
honestly you guys act like this will break you though,but yet people will pay for psn plus for ps3 or ps4 for extra features for a year for 50 bucks.and that doesn't allow the cheap renewal plan

I have Start8 and ModernMix installed on Windows 8.1. I am wondering whether they be uninstalled before installing Microsoft's free upgrade to Windows 10. I would like to know Startdock's recommendation on that question.
The latest version of ModernMix should disable itself on Windows 10. Start8 should be fine to leave installed, but I would obviously recommend an upgrade to Start10 so uninstalling Start8, installing Windows 10 and then installing Start10.
Start 8 was released 3 years ago for $5 (and actually I think I got it on sale for less), so charging a few bucks for an upgraded version for Windows 10 is about what I expected. While free is nice, for a cheap utility that has to interface with Windows at a low level, throwing down a few bucks every few years to get upgrades for newer versions of Windows is a reasonable tradeoff. It's a niche product for those of us too stubborn to use the Win10 start menu, and someone has to foot the bill for the development costs of reworking it for Windows 10.
Plus I suspect I'll spend a lot more than this upgrading other software for official Win10 support anyhow.
i have start 8 from windows 8 to 8.1 and now upgraded to win 10...seem like my start 8 still working like it is..weird...should i upgrade to start 10? ..

You may encounter some problems, but Start10 also offers new features. You may want to try a trial of Start10 when we hit 1.0 just to see if you want to upgrade or not.
Start 8 users who paid for the product on an individual basis should be upgraded to Start 10 for free. I also don't mind paying to help development but it just seems blazingly obvious to me the upgrade should be offered free to people like myself.Microsoft is offering their operating system for the first time ever for free... It just seems completely unfair for Stardock not to upgrade their paying customers for free.In fact if there's not a free upgrade they will never get another penny from me personally... I'm sure that there's others that feel the same. It's just bells and whistles that I bought because I liked them, because I could, but not because I have to. Whilst Microsoft are indeed offering Windows 10 as a free upgrade to Windows 7 and 8.1 users it ought to be pointed out that they are not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. There will be a long term benefit to them which they expect to make them more revenue. Unfortunately developers like Stardock will not receive the benefits of this, so asking us to give away our work for free just because Microsoft are is not really fair on us.
If developers, qa staff, support staff etc were free then we would obviously offer it for free, but unfortunately these things costs money and it should be stressed that we have not stopped Start8 from working on Windows 10 and you are free to use it. What we are saying is should you encounter issues on that OS (and OS changes mean you may have issues with the search bar overlapping things and some incorrect colour choices and modern UI icons) then we will not be updating Start8 to support that OS as it was designed and sold for Windows 8. Should customers have issues on Windows 8 then we will continue to update it for that OS.
I appreciate your opinion and I know this is not what you wanted to hear, but all I can say is Start10 is not simply a rebuild of Start8 with 8 swapped for 10 and tiny changes. There has been a considerable amount of effort put into Start10 and I personally do not feel that asking $4 which is less than many people probably spent on lunch today for an upgrade to support a new operating system is really a big ask. Especially when some people will have paid the original $5 almost three years ago now.
Obviously if the product is unimportant to you then do not upgrade to Start10. Just continue to use Start8 either on Windows 8 or use it on Windows 10 but with the knowledge that you may encounter issues as it is not designed for that operating system.
I have been using Start 8 with the windows 10 tech preview for over 6 months with no problem yet when I got win 10 pro and tried to install the latest version it would not even let me install due to not having the right OS, I just used my backup copy Start 8 (1.47) that I was using on tech preview and it has no problem installing. There is no compatibility problems or bugs what so ever and everything works just fine! This company does not need to change or upgrade anything from my half year test!! It more seems like a re-branding and cash grab to me! On the flip side $4 is not much to ask however as their is no problems (at least with 1.47) what so ever people would be only upgrading to support the developers!!! You can all just get the version I said and enjoy your start menu being back without having to pay for something we have all already paid for (I do suggest giving a donation to support their work)
If the developers give the option of a donation with a FREE upgrade to Start 10 I would happily give them $10 however because they made the latest version of Start 8 not even install I don't think I would be willing to do that at this point in time as that is very deceptive to the people who have paid in the past and now cant even install something that works fine!! If you be honest and change the installer to allow the latest version to install my faith that it is not just a re-branding and cash grab WILL be restored and add the donate option and you WILL get $10 from me.
It is a great product and worth more than $4!! I really love it!! however dev's are doing this all wrong and losing faith with their current customers.

I also bought windows blinds but after every restart from when I changed windows font size I would have issues with it not being correct and unloading it just would not work and or trying to put a different/default theme would not happen, It kept changing my font size after restarting and stop me from being able to click anywhere all I would get is a loud noise unless I used the keyboard to get to windows font size and change it back than log off then I could use my computer until restart than problem would come back. Even trying to uninstall was a big pain!! It was nice when it worked for the very short time that it did! Clearly it didn't like me increasing the windows font size as had problems from their on and it really likes to leave things in your registry and not uninstall even though I had uninstalled it just so you know. In fact I had to format to get rid of the dam thing as I could not use my computer at all with the mouse from that time on and never reinstalled it due to the above issues! If you ever get it to work properly let me know but please don't expect me to paying for the updated version (windows blinds clearly) for something that never really worked for me in the 1st place and forced me to format to remove it completely.
Off point but many companies pay tribute to Saturn esp in the tech field! Yours is so obvious and in your face but most people don't notice what is in front of them! Do you guys understand why Saturn and it's rings are in most places you see??? I have done a lot of research into this subject and if you don't know and just use the logo for the sake of the fact it works I strongly suggest you look into why tribute is payed to Saturn! A really fascinating subject a real eye opener to say the least! Symbology is fun

Love the alien face you guys use for the default profile pic's with the UFO as the mouth not to mention the name of the company and if you right click the alien face to save the photo it saves as space!! WTF best symbology ever hahahahahaha really well done and thought out thanks for the laugh (I will donate $10 just for the cool symbology if you but add a donate button to your site, not joking I WILL)
One more thing is the . on the K referring to earth, sun, star or planet ?? I can see what the K is when turned sideways just the dot I am not to sure about and don't like to assume! it does however when zoomed in on remind me of the same symbol many ancient cultures drew!
Start10 is not Start8 rebranded!
Your Start8 copy has a number of incompatibility issues on Windows 10, it may simply be you have not noticed them yet.
Start10 also offers additional options like control over the taskbar, better colour matching (the menu in your screenshot does not appear to be the correct black for example), blur under the menu, the modern theme, the option for cortana as search, the option for putting Start10 into tile mode, control over the menu transparency, texture etc.
All this moaning about $3.99/$4.99 for a new product is very depressing.
I upgraded to Windows 10, saw immediately that there were incompatibilities with Start 8 and happily paid my upgrade price to get a working start menu.
And, I might add, my exchange rate is over R13 to the dollar so quit the complaining.

I was just very unhappy at you making the latest version of Start 8 not even install as I found it deceptive!!!
I will just use the 30 day trial before paying as the AUD is at the lowest I have ever seen it and may have improved by the end of the trial. Either way you will be getting $4.99 from me as I have always been a happy customer (except for windows blinds)
Ps. the black is different because I made it that way and the cotana search is their I just made it show search icon instead of search box, as taking up so much room is just dumb to me! that is what the magnifying glass is. The windows 10 menu is also there I just changed the icon to the Star trek federation of planets icon as I don't like the default windows icon at all!
