Will Start10 be a free upgrade for the users who paid for Start8?
I emailed support about object desktop and they told me if my subscription was still good then it would be a free upgrade. I would assume the same applies, I don't think they sell anything that is stand alone or non scrip based.
maybe we will get 50% off for the prize. I think it is ok to support the development!
Start10 is currently a beta release exclusive to Object Desktop and Object Desktop Infinite subscribers. Final release pricing and availability details will be communicated at a later date.
I would like to make the free upgrade start8 vs start10.As you leave the final version of Windows 10 will upgrade my windows 8.1, ie no more will make use of start8_menu only the fences, as you leave the windows 10, for what purpose will the start8 and start10?
The purpose of Start8 and Start10 is to give the Win8/8.1 and Win10 OS a start menu. A real start menu.
start10 if the update is not free for users of Start8, so I would take classic shell which is completely free Sorry I use a translator English French Online
Marco_Sdw - If you are a subscriber to ObjectDesktop you can get it for free.
I think you will find that beta testers are not usually charged for testing software for you...
You're purchasing the final product, but we're letting you try it early as a way to also help us with beta testing it.
So will there be any reward for beta testers testing your software.
Wouldn't a more professional approach be to offer the beta software as a time limited version that expired when the final realease comes out. You can then reward anyone who submits bugs etc... and having been a beta tester a few times before I have always been given a final release for me taking the time to bugtest.
I know the cost is minimal, but its the principle of being asked to test software for free...
I believe we offer a 30 day free trial of the beta.
This is how Stardock have done things for over a decade.
You're welcome to wait for the full release. If you find testing software is something you enjoy, then by all means.
I don't know it sounds like Stardock is going to charge for a simple upgrade. There are so many good freeware programs out now that are being used more by the skinning community. Go to Deviantart the start menu skins they include with most Windowblinds skins are for start menus that are free none are for Start8. Makes me rethink paying for an upgrade. Windows 8.1 to 10 is free, but Stardock wants us to rebuy their start menu? Or their big deal is if we buy every product they sell (object desktop) we can get a free upgrade, but only for 1 year, no thanks. I think I've made up my mind.
There is no need for a WindowBlinds skin to include a Start8 skin as Start8 is skinned by WindowBlinds using the Windows 7 style skin included with all WB skins.
I'm disappointed that Stardock is only offering $1 off the price of Start10 if I upgrade from Win 8 to Win 10. I'm using Start8 on Win 10 Preview and it works well on the current build.
If I upgrade to Win 10 will I also have to purchase WindowBlinds Win 10 version? No free upgrade on it either?
I'm probably going to stay on Windows 8 and the issue will be moot but I think at the least Stardock should offer those upgrading is 50% off both Start10 and Windowblinds for Win 10.
The global skin for Start8 that is used by Windowblinds is great but that has nothing to do with the issue here which is why is Stardock not either giving us free upgrade or at least 50% off if we upgrade? It is not like we would still have Windows 8 and Start 8 and Windowblinds for Windows 8 both of which we have paid for.
Unfortunately software development costs money and due to payment processing costs it becomes unrealistic to charge less than a few $ unless you are a massive company like Apple who can get much better rates and merge transactions in many cases.
Taking WindowBlinds for example, it will need some specific work to support the new Windows 10 features. To give this away for nothing means we would have to had charged more originally for WB8 which means those who have no interest in Windows 10 would have to have paid for it. You will notice we update our applications and using Start8 as an example here have added numerous features based on customer requests without a single additional charge.
As you say there is nothing requiring you to upgrade and we are not stopping Start8 or WB8 running on Windows 10(Well I think WB8 installer may block you now due to issues from the OS, but you can force it), but obviously they are not officially supported on Windows 10 as they were designed for Windows 8 (or Windows 7/8 in the case of WB8). I imagine we will have a new WB for Windows 10, though I don't think this has been officially decided yet and the upgrade fee may well be 50% off as it cost more initially.
That's really just the color otherwise no difference.
I have bought it
I had no problem buying the software again.
Star10 bye bye welcome classic shell
The beta has been opened you don't need to be an Object Desktop subscriber now. As always, the benefit of being a subscriber means you get access first.

I looked at a an article on Wikipedia that showed a detailed comparison of both free and pay start menu tools there were about 8 or so and from what I found Classic Shell beat all the others hands down. It had so many more options than the others and was free to boot. One option I really liked it automatically separated the Windows apps from programs by providing two menus on the main menu, all programs and apps. I barely use the apps and didn't like the clutter. Now if Start10 gets added functions and not just making Start8 work with Windows 10 that could be a deciding factor.
Start10 already has the option for a sub menu for Modern UI apps assuming that's what you mean by having two menus.
It is. I wondered if they would add that.
Being charged for the same product twice... interesting. My apologies, I see the difference now: a single new menu was added and all instances of 8 were replaced with 10. I'll just stick Start8, the start menu that randomly can't find programs I have installed.
