I have played the latest beta (4 i think) for quite a bit of time now and loving it, but some questions/observations pop up that I would like to answer/share with u guys to hear what u think/know about it:
1) Building starbases - Am I the only one finding it increasingly tedious to upgrade starbases 1-2 moduls a turn per starbase? I often have 2-4 starbases for 1-2 planets, and each turn I have to upgrade like 10-15 modules on my current immense game. I have begun to shut down shipyards just because it bores the shit out of me having to upgrade starbases all the time.
2) Resources on the map (elerium etc. etc.). I can see I need Elerium for force fields, but i'm still in doubt about some stuff regarding these resources:
2a: Do resources/mining starbases provide any bonuses to nearby planets? And if yes, do they need to be in the area (the octagon) of the starbase? I've noticed that I can build mining starbases anywhere and see I get more "resources" available.
2b: Is the utilization of fx. Elerium 1:1 so one resource per 1 ship, or is it 1 resource per 1 forcefield module?
3) Research, I feel the amount of points needed for one research (on normal research rate) is a bit to low - everything becomes 1 turn rather fast. What do you guys think? In other games like Civilization/Sword of the Stars, research takes longer. I just feel there's no point in building dedicated research planets as slapping 1-3 research stations on most planets seems to be enough to reach on tech per turn.
4) Where can I read about some strategy stuff related to GC3? I've been looking here and on youtube, but most people on youtube suck, and I would love to improve my play I watch the Developement Stream but it's turned into a showcase of cheat instead of actually showing some strategy (which is what's it for - showcasing new stuff/answering questions).
5) Playing as Yor, my morale is almost always at 100%, but when does it go down? I know overpopulation effects the morale but some planets can hold more that the morale and suggests and still be at 100% Fx. morale is 50 and my pop is 52 and the population cap is 25 on the planet. I have a planet with 182 population in my current game at turn 208.
And last, sorry to any typos, I hope the above makes sense.
1 - Starbase building is a bit tedious. I generally use rally points, which helps a lot (I mean click on shipyard, click rally point, and choose the current starbase, then queue up a few constructors) though it isn't optimal by any means.
2 My understanding at this point is that resources (elerium etc) are just for building specific items. Might change in the future. I have also seen Paul say on the livestream that asteroid mining (other than for the resources) will be put in at some point, if I understand correctly.
3 I agree, a lot of things in the game happen too fast or are too easy. But I think that is a conscious choice by the developers to make it easier to test the mechanics, and will be seriously balanced closer to launch.
4 At this point, strategy guides wouldn't be much good as the game is changing too fast. However, I suggest you take a look at guides/youtube let's play for GC2, which will be useful. GC3 is by no means a clone, but many of the basic notions are similar.
5 Haven't checked out the Yor myself much, but I do know there has been considerable discussion in these forums on You morale and how it should be handled. I would add that morale for any of the races at this point is another thing that is too easy to maintain. Reality (balancing) is going to be a cold slap in the face, but a needed one,
This."I have begun to shut down shipyards just because it bores the shit out of me having to upgrade starbases all the time."I kill all but a few shipyards, because of the constant tedium of dealing with nearly-pointless constructor spam.I also agree research is far too fast; in Gal Civ 1, I'd be done terraforming all my planets, and be on to heavy research; here, I'm done all my research, and maybe halfway through terraforming my main planets, which are the fastest builders. Also, 1D phasing? 2D phasing? So on? Teleporters? Antimatter missiles? Terror stars?Where'd half the tech go?We're in the future, but somehow, things got more simplistic, with less options available? Why?Where did the diversity on starbases go? We're now locked in to just one flavour, and it sucks. Its a Uranus-flavoured lollipop.
"Yor morale"... what's that Terminator quote?Doesn't feel pain, doesn't feel fear, doesn't stop, won't stop, unless you kill it.The Yor are machines, machines don't have emotions, or at least, they can turn them off.
