The game is really shaping up and I am really enjoying the latest release.
But...
All these jokes built into the game centering around decisions are funny, but going a little overboard. Stop doing schtick, every decision has some silly joke built into it. A joke every now and then is nice, but jokes get old and it comes at price of immersion.
Also...
The founder star naming has left a-lot of strange star-names. Stuff like (I'm just making them up, but I've seen similar ones) TheKillerofPeople123, TheDarklord23, TeAmoCassandra. These are just forum handles or sentences. It's sloppy.
Such absurdity can be very fun and colorful, it just needs to be treated accordingly. That said, I have nothing against the individual. I'm sure he's a gentleman and a scholar. After all, he does watch "Jesus Today" and supports responsible role models that only perform regulated and peer reviewed dance moves (like the hokey-pokey, funky chicken, and macarena). So I guess he can't be all bad.
Yes, but I believe we both know that medium rare is the only way to have your steak. The flavor is in the juices.
The internets kind of force you to be a drama queen to get your opinion heard though, in fact I picture most people on the internet as dressing up in drag while they type. (Not me though, I don my finest smoking jacket and light up a pipe to gain insight +1)
If a steak doesn't bleed and go "MOO!" everytime I sink a fork into her, it isn't a steak...
Ok, if I don't get a steak today I'm literally going to die.
Lol, there are too many techs for me too even consider changing for some of you out of courtesy in a mod. I mean, its time consuming to put all that effort into something so silly. It might be best to take a deep breath and try to like it.
Come on DARCA,
changing a few techs might be even fun. I will help you getting started:
1) Magical Orientation: New building Magic Screening Center, investigate and identifies the magical inclined members of the population, happiness +5%;
which leads to
2) Magic Research Centers: New building Magical Research Institute, allows magical inclined members of the population to take a fresh look at hard research problems, research luck +1 (increases change of spontaneous completing a tech research);
which in turn leads to
3) Final Magical Proof: Which leads to the insight magic does not exist and that the populus are gullible fools and are easily deceived. This insight generates extra income for the governmental elite. Also the population is happier thinking that the magical gifted are an asset to society instead of knowing that they are raving dangerous madmen who occasionally have a flash of technological genius, but are most of the time the reason for research projects going off track. And keeping the people unenlightened makes them docile and more productive. Planetary income -10%, Research -10%, Production + 5%, and Happiness +5%
If magic doesn't exist, then try explaining how magnets work! You can't can you? I didn't think so!
magnet is an abbreviation of MAGic does Not ExisT. So their name is a hint to the fact that how you believe they work is a delusion. The reality is that the producers of them glue millions of microscopic demons to the surface of the so called magnets. These little demons really like iron, so when that gets near they simply try to hold on to it as close and as long as they can. It is the same as the way dragons like gold, but because of their size and violent nature they are quite hard to glue to any surface at all. Fact is that this lie 'Magnetic force is a natural occurring phenomenon' is perpetuated by the industrial moguls, because they fear public outcry about the cruelty towards the poor harmless demonmites.
Hah, you thought i could not explain how magnets work, but i could. I do know their secret, now you and the rest of the world also know the heinous truth.
I don't mind some humour but I absolutely hate some of the ridiculous star names.
If some people were early adopters and got to name a star then let them have it in their games. Not a problem there.
Make it an option to have founder star names in the game or be able to switch it off.
It damages the immersion for me to see some of the names. Having the option to switch them off would be the correct thing to do.

Hmmm...i did some tech descriptions for the new galciv2 update in the works and it was challenging. Its one thing to let my imagination go wild and creative, ideas just come then. But having to go with a unfamiliar concept and try keeping it lore friendly to the original and interesting was a greater difficultly that I thought. There will also be hundreds of techs filled with humor in galciv3 in them and it takes time to edit all that...time I'd rather have as of recent.
I admire the devs when they write all the descriptions, even when they suck I know how difficult it was to come up with stuff that sounds good.
DARCA. ;- )
I just have a hard time understanding people complaining about "immersion" in a game like this. It's a game set in the imaginary future with imaginary races, and imaginary star names. Not to mention the game is known for being humorous and the star names aren't even visible most of the time. The first game I played I sat there going star by star to see if my name showed up. That ended up being too tedious and time consuming and I stopped.
Humor is a matter of preference so I can get some people not getting a laugh out of a star name. I think some of them are dumb too (I realize mine falls in that category for some people). But I can't imagine sitting there having a good time and going "Gosh darn it, there's TheKillerofPeople123 again, my game is ruined". You can rename planets you colonize, other wise the name isn't even on the screen. I fail to see how that can be having such a negative effect on your gameplay.
If this was CivV or some other game that has a historical/realism aspect, I could see the annoyance. But not in this game. Everytime I see a thread like this I think of Brian Regan and "the epitome of hyperbole".
People just play and get into their games a bit differently than you do I guess. However, just because this game is not based on reality doesn't mean people can't get into it. In fact, most of the games out there are imaginary/fictional and people will complain about things that they feel messes with their personal immersion.
+2cents.
Indeed. Immersion doesn't imply or require realism, and for me it's more about self-consistency; something that is lost when I discover a sweet class 15 planet orbiting a star named F@tal1ty69 or the like. It's not a game-breaker but I would appreciate a toggle for the (often terrible) founder names.
To clarify my feeling... Doesn't ruin the game, but cheapens it. I still enjoy playing. I am sharing my view that small details can really make a game feel more polished. They've put a lot of time and energy into art direction and creating a back story and setting, only to add a random element of user named stars into it that brings me "back to earth."

Agreed.
double post. oops
I agree take the jokes out or at least tone it down . They over did this in GalCiv2. And most of the jokes were simply not funny.
As far as the Star names go yes I can see these stupid names becoming irritating. Yes having a toggle to turn founder names off or even clicking on a stars name and select "Never use Name" so that you can keep some names that are good but removing the stupid ones would be good.
Will there be a way to mod star names in the game?
The problem I think is that it is overdone at this point. Too many jokes.
I can easily see an option made to rename the stars, but no easy way to get rid of the jokes. You'd have to mod every joke. I think it needs to be toned down as the poster earlier noted.
I agree that the game has way too many jokes and I would like to see it pared back. I haven't laugh, giggled, or even smiled at any of them, maybe even groaned at one or two of them. If I was actually amused by the humor, then maybe I would argue to keep them in. However, I'm not and I agree with a previous poster who said it made the game feel amateurish, which is sad because the intro video and most of the game come across as really polished.
I guess in the future when my virtual politicians and virtual generals are discussing a war that will result in the loss of millions or billions of virtual beings, nothing breaks the ice like a bad joke -> Why did the Dregin cross the galaxy? To get to the other side. HAHAHAHAHAHA
I like the jokes. Laughed quite a few times when reading the Drengin tech descriptions.
I giggled when I got the "Infinite Shades of Infra-red" galactic event..
