The news went out the other day, but didn't make over to these forums so I wanted to post over here.
"Stardock announced today the addition of Adrian Luff as its new director of platform architecture. Luff, who oversaw Battle.net’s growth from a single PC to a global network of thousands of systems during his 17-year tenure at Blizzard Entertainment, is leading Stardock’s move into next-gen connected gaming, currently codenamed Project Tachyon. "Stardock has a long legacy of innovating from the ground up and this is a fantastic opportunity to continue that tradition," said Luff, who also architected and built World of Warcraft’s launch infrastructure. "Cloud-based computing lets us do things that used to only be possible for the biggest-budget games - now we don’t have to fly around the world and spend millions of dollars setting up hardware like I’ve done in the past." Luff is responsible for the rollout of Project Tachyon, which will manage the online infrastructure to provide the meta-game experience for Stardock games. Unlike similar services, Project Tachyon will exist entirely in the cloud - meaning that Stardock can scale its capabilities to demand in real time. In addition, for PC gamers, Tachyon is expected to make use of Valve's Steamworks where possible."

Not a fan of Blizzard. I hope he doesn't try to turn my beloved SD games into some zerg rush horse crap.
Its seems his talent lies in making computer games talk and play with each other not in building a game. I don't think we have to worry about that.
Great to have a new guy for MP on board. Maybe we'll even get it for Elemental2015?
Read the articles.
This sounds pretty awesome.
Sounds very interesting...also like how this sounds like it is complementing steam/other services rather than being a competitor. Could lead to some very interesting developments in terms of content being shared between client games.
Welcome aboard Adrian!
I absolutely LOVE this quote because its so true in any job where you have to go outside the office or lab...
" Dealing with ISPs who seemingly don’t know how to run their own network. Hoping you have enough hardware to support launch day. It’s a labor- and resource-intensive job which sucks budget away from the game itself.”
I've got one of those ISP's... I diagnose their network problems before they do.
As an exclusively SP player, I don't think this news affects me much.
Does this mean StarDock is thinking of emulating Blizzard's multi-player style, with everyone having to pay a monthly fee to play a future GalCiv game? Like WOW and Star Craft?
Welcome Mr. Luff.
DAMN impressive! I've always viewed Blizzard as the KINGS of PC gaming and Stardock as "The little company that could" with a gamer at its helm. Stardock hiring Blizzards best networkguy is a major win!
charon2112,
Dude, for fucks sake, read what the whole thing is about....
It does if this same architecture is used to track how SP players play games in order to balance them better and to get a deeper understanding of how players utilize the UI.
Welcome!
Brad convinced someone to move to Michigan?
N/A
Da fuck are you talking about? Starcraft doesn't have monthly fees. Get off your stardock high horse before you embarrass yourself more.
So this was the sins announcement everyone was waiting for? A bit anticlimactic if you ask me, unless this feature is somehow implemented into the game in the next 6 months.
I'm curious what's the investment involved here. An engineer and some subscription fees, is that it?
Also, is this something you think might be licensed to 3rd parties?
ID didn't put it in this post directly, but if you see the other links you'll notice we're starting a new office in Austin.
Awesome news. Welcome aboard!
Congratulations, Adrian and Stardock!
"We are absolutely not changing our stand on DRM. In fact one of our design goals is to avoid any dependency between the single player game and Tachyon," Luff said.
Stardock continues to get it.
"We will require a Stardock account to enable features like statistics tracking and multiplayer matchmaking since these are tied to a specific player. We’re making this as transparent as possible for the player – log in once and never worry about it again, Luff said. “Our games will never kick the player out or fail to load if it can’t talk to Tachyon for any reason."
I hope other studios are listening.
Just wanted to chime in on those quotes that matrix_v pulled and say "Bravo, Stardock!"
Not quite sure what this has to do with Sins, but... Ok... The technology is cool and would certainly be useful in the future games, but again, I'm not sure why sins players would like this particularly seeing as how updates on our game have been suspended so it won't be impacted by this. I plan to consider buying OWTC when it comes out, but that's not a Sins thing, that's just that it sounds interesting with or without this software backing it up.
Edit: after some hunting... Did I just imagine the discontinuation of sins updates? I can't find the thread...
