I was indeed expecting fun. Testing software isn't my idea of fun, sorry. How do I get a refund?
You can't be serious...
What the hell were you expecting from an ALPHA? Are you completely unaware of what having access to an Alpha and Beta implies?
Here's the StarDock return policy, if you bought it through them:
https://store.stardock.com/policy.aspx#Policy_ReturnPolicy
If you bought it through Steam, you're pretty much out of luck:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8360-wejc-2625#refund
You might be able to resell the game, but I'm not sure if Valve allows Early Access game license to be transfered.
And, um, didn't you read the rather substantial amount of text on the Steam and StarDock purchase pages, not to mention the various Forums, that indicated this WASN'T a playable game yet? And this was indeed playtesting and related activities?
Let me emphasize on Rover's reply.... ARE YOU INSANE???? I am having a blast testing this game and making my own custom star ships. Access to the Alpha and beta Phase testing means you will get EVERYTHING the game will have to offer when it goes gold. ALL DLC and future expansion games for GCIII. HELL, I was even offered to create ships for a future Mod for this game. Was $100.00 bucks worth it! HELL YEAH!
So again I ask gbaran... ARE YOU INSANE?!
I can sympathize if you do not find playing an Alpha fun. It is a special kind of fun that many do not appreciate. I cannot really sympathize that you did not know what you were getting into. All materials I have seen have made it amply clear what this package is and will be. Repeatedly. If you do not find fun in playing with Alphas and testing and breaking things, then this was not the package for you and you should not have bought it. The best I can advise is to wait until all the testing is done and then try it. You might also consider waiting until a couple of expansions and DLCs are available. Since they will be free to you, they might tempt you into trying the game again. Perhaps it will be fun then.
In the meantime, I am going back to playing with the Shipyard. Echoing the sentiments of others here, anyone who doesn't find that fun must be crazy. You might try and have fun there, too, but there are no promises in an Alpha.
Just wait... soon enough you'll have the full release version, with all expansion packs and DLC coming your way.
Early Access games are NOT considered pre-orders and are thus non-refundable
You cannot transfer/sell/move/exchange games bound to your Library on Steam regardless of how it was obtained (Steam purchase, cd-key activation, gift activation, etc)
This is funny and actually made me smile.
TOTALLY FAKE UNOFFICIAL ALPHA CODE OF CONDUCT ALERT
It with great pleasure and sadness that we must invoke for the first time the GalCiv3 Alpha Code of Conduct.
https://forums.galciv3.com/452380/page/1/#3452244
GalCiv3 Alpha Code of Conduct
Rule 1. The first person to complain about the alpha being "broken" "unplayable" "waste of money" etc shall be given a one way ticket to Paris. You will be unceremoniously dumped into Lake Erie and you will swim all the way to Paris. Sharks with lasers on their heads will 'guide' you on your trip. SWIM FOR YOUR DAMN LIFE!
Rule 2. See Rule 1
Note that there will be some delay since we kinda sold the sharks back to the zoo since everything seemed to be going so well. The lasers are back in storage so we'd have to dust those off too and ensure they don't explode again, because those damn Drengin are so sneaky and sold us a bunch of duds last time.
A minor set back but rest assured we'll have those sharks outfitted with laser, just as soon as we've stopped drinking from the 4th of July weekend. Backup plan is to strap a laser pointer onto Frogboy instead.
I am LOVING the alpha! Plus it's really nice to participate on these boards and feel like you are making an impact on the final release. Stardock was smart to make the Founders Elite $100 - this ensures that the people participating are committed and serious about playing/testing/giving feedback.
gbaren - did you like GalCiv2? Or is this your first GalCiv experience?
Ha!
This gave me a good laugh.
You paid $100 for a lifetime sub to everything the devs will ever make for Galciv 3 until the end of time. Access to the alpha and beta is just a bonus they tacked on to the deal (just like the forum badge and naming a star). If you paid $100 simply to play an unfinished game, you've got too much disposable income and should send me some of it.
I've had the alpha on my computer since the day it launched, and I've yet to play a single turn because I've no interest in playing an unfinished game (not at this early stage anyway). That's OK though - that's not why I bought the Founders Elite edition. I bought it for all the stuff I'll eventually get, which will almost certainly be worth more than $100.
Make a check out to me too. I can buy a few more copies of the Alpha for a few friends who would love to get their hand on this game and test it too. I think about $ 700.00 will be sufficient.
really? For a thousand you get to name a universe in the game, and they make a ten meter statue of you holding a lightsaber to lord kona's lifeless body in front of their building.
DARCA.
ALERT!! ALERT!! ALERT!!!
Troll suspicion.
I think someone is trying to bait us,
ROFLMAO!!!!! Gee maybe even get a school named after me too, ya think?
Add me to the "Tough Titty" list.
I'll assume that you're extremely good at 4X and, yep, playing Galactic Civilizations 3 right now is beans supremo. You know how to work the research, how to get Planetary Invasion the quickest way possible and look, after 50-60 turns you've won the game.
Good for you.
Not being such a kickass 4Xer, I spent too much time farting around with the early research so it took me a while to get Planetary Invasion (I researched Diplomacy which of course is largely irrelevant at this point - economic benefits are fine, but really, who cares?) So while the Dregin ships are currently looking at each other going "You know how you said there's no place like home? Thanks to those Terran assholes, there's now no home, period!", I've still got to kill them off for good then deal with the other two evil empires.
The game is obviously far from finished:
Ship battle is awful, I'd rather they did away with the pop up screen, just let your ship/fleet go against the enemy ship/fleet and inform you of the result.
Planetary Invasion is like, so horribly difficult with all the training and stellar marines you need to research. Not. So at this point, why have the research options there? Research seems to be the most fully fleshed out at this point, to me, but without the necessity to get some of that research.
Diplomacy/Espionage/Trade are non-existant and of all the things Stardock could get right to make me happy, it's those things (If great diplomacy/espionage comes at the cost of some of the fancy ship design I don't think I'd miss it much). So I'm prepared to wait.
One last complaint. The "Random events" when you colonize a planet. Can we do away with the stupid pods every time? Yes, great for your research but c'mon. And keep the humourous descriptions like GalCiv II 'Advanced Diplomacy: Note to self: "Pull my finger" is not a universal greeting. Gaffes such as this one can be greatly reduced and, we hope, eliminated entirely as our diplomacy becomes more advanced and our understanding of other cultures (rather humorless cultures, some would say) increases.'
But I fully knew what Alpha and Beta meant when I paid my money over. I'm happy with where the game is now (third or forth update?). Given the advancements that have been made, I'm sure the next update - whether that takes the game to Beta zone (however that's judged and by whom) or not - will show the same level of improvements and yep, I don't have to pay one more cent to get the full version/DLCs/Expansion packs. Even if Stardock did decide I had to put up say another $50.00 for all the DLCs/Expansions, if the Gold/Finished Galactic Civilization III's good enough, I'll cough for it (I'd just expect to get plenty of warning about the extra investment and get a discount on the extra money Stardock wants the non-Founder crowd to cough).
Did he really pay the $100? I have been waiting for him to reply so I could see whether or not the founder's badge appears on his reply, but so far, no reply from him. Which just increases my suspicions.
One perk of the mobile version of this site might be that when I tap on peoples profiles there badge is displayed. So yes the OP did pay for the alpha.
I smell a
But in case you're not, refunds are not given for pre-release/pre-order software, as it's been pointed out.
Edit - You can click on a user's name and see their badge as well.
Haha ha ha ha! Your locked in for life with me stupid!
Oh. I mean. Welcome to the Galactic Civilizations three online community friend. Here your feelings and opinions will be heard by the developers themselves. Feel free to be as sarcastic and dramatic as a gay L.A hairstylist or as direct and serious as a Yor invasion. There are three rules to follow however:
1. If you find that you are spending to much or to little time reading and posting on the forums and playing then get a cat, if the first cat doesn't mend the void in your soul keep buying cats until your void is filled like a wall of cheap glue that is keeping you functional in society.
2. One karma a day is to be given to our mighty devs and three for our most Sovereign, Emperor, King, leader, Ruler, Overseer, President, CEO, -and whatever else his most exalted excellency wishes to be called- Frogboy by his awesome screen name also known as Bradley R. Wardell the founder of Stardock Entertainment.
3. On his solar birthday at June twenty fourth we are required to stand in front of Stardock HQ at 12:00 AM-11:59:59 PM and sing happy birthday while clapping and crying for twenty four straight hours or whenever our Sovereign Wardell commands us to leave.
Have fun!
I really hope the guy who started this thread wasn't serious and this was a setup. Those of us who are geeks, nerds, and recovering IT staff LOVE Alphas and Betas 'cuze we get to break stuff on purpose. Regardless, thank you to the many comedians we have in this group. I laughed so hard I nearly fell off my chair.
What exactly did you think an alpha TEST was...?
Roflmao....... Thank you Darca that was funny as hell!

I bought a house last week and it looks like this now!
I want a refund!!!!
