Update 5/25/2017
Well, I started a thread back in Dec 2011 that’s seen a lot of activity (some 922,000 views over the course of a few years apparently...). That thread had a good deal of tips/strategies/discussions about League of Legends from new and old players alike. You can find the previous thread (now archived) here: https://forums.joeuser.com/413863. I think its time to start fresh with a new thread.
What’s this thread all about?For those that followed the previous thread, the type of content you see here will be fairly consistent to what you are used to. Please consider this a place to discuss LoL related content as you like. I'll do the same and treat the thread as a blog as well where I talk about what’s going on with me in LoL. Feel free to jump in and join the discussion if you like.
Quick background on meI played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011, I started getting heavily involved in League of Legends, and folks from the community were kind enough to help me figure things out. I play LoL most nights, stream, make videos and it’s my main gaming interest.

I guess. They won't have a choice I think in the future, though. Ranked TB will replace those high elo players pref this season methinks. I think its cool to be able to play all roles, but I can tell you I sure as fug don't want to watch NightBlue playing outside of the jungle, trick outside of the jungle, turtle outside of adc, etc. I think it will elevate the level of play.
I think there will be a big difference between Teambuilder and Teambuilder 2.0 which I like to call Rolebuilder.
At first I was hesitant about them allowing people to specialize more with the upcoming Rolebuilder as I considered myself a jack of all trades. The closer I got to Plat, the more I realized what a crappy Jungler/Mid/Top I was. So yeah, now I can't wait for the new system.
The current Teambuilder is a bit of a joke to me. It's for people who want to play troll Supports, have Morde Mirror Matches, and to just fuck around with 'fun mode' games cause of the crazy Teambuilder matchmaking that could pit you against a Bronze Support Poppy or a Challenger Ezreal ADC. Or on occasion, people use it for its intended purpose of learning a new role or champion.
Getting to Diamond probably takes a lot of hard work and dedication no matter how talented you are. My point was I doubt those people waste much time in the current Teambuilder. I don't know many Diamond players but I know I never see Cow in that game mode.
Teambuilder games are a complete joke. Every time I'm in there I see joke games - high ELO people might play it, but you can tell that they generally don't try.
Play it if you want, but you really shouldn't trick yourself into thinking that the results of teambuilder games mean anything - you are in games with a bunch of people who are just screwing around.
Welp, now I remember why I don't play solo queue at Gold ELO. It is incredibly unpleasant.
So I got screwed in my promos. Last season I go 8-2 and go from Gold 1 to Plat 1. This season I go 8-2 and get demoted from Plat 1 to Gold III. So that makes sense (its because only the first ~3 games in your promos really matter - the last games just move you up or down a total of a few divisions, but the first few games are MASSIVE).
But jungling in Gold doesn't really matter. Gold players aren't good enough for it to matter.
The purpose of a jungler is to get your team ahead, then be a tank later in the game. So you can't really carry. I get my team ahead every single game, but Gold players are too incompetent for that to matter. 10k golds don't matter in Gold - its literally irrelevant. All that matters in which team has players who throw less hard late game.
I mean, I lost a game where my team had a 13.5k gold lead and 5 dragons simply because we couldn't figure out how to group despite all my pinging. People just kept wandering all over the map dying 1 by 1 until only I was left. The fact that I was 10/4/16 didn't really matter when its 1v5.
Thats the thing - getting your team that 4k gold at 20 minutes or whatever by outplaying their jungle doesn't mean anything. You win gold games by being the person who does the damage in the fights late game, not by doing stupid stuff like getting teammates ahead and being a tank. Being a tank is stupid in gold because nobody groups anyway if your team is bad, and if your team is good you will just autowin.
So yeah, I'm done with solo queue. Its a waste of my time. I remember why I dont play it. You have to play hundreds of games to get rid of the randomness in jungle in gold, and I'm not willing to invest that just get a different border. If I mained a damage dealing class I'm sure I could do it in a lot fewer games.
I think that in gold in jungle you are supposed to just screw your team and build straight deeps (jungle Yi etc). That way you can actually carry. Its a terrible strategy with competent players, but Gold players are so bad that its probably what you are supposed to do in jungle.
So, I just played an aram. Won a 4v5.. w/e. I'm looking at the end game stats and I see me, as a sona, with 1.2k true damage in the stats. Anyone know what I'm getting true dmg on?
items
Mark/Snowball
Mark / Dash is a summoner spell exclusive to the Howling Abyss. It deals 「 (10 + (5 × Champion's Level)) 」true damage, over the next 3 seconds the player may reactivate the spell to dash towards the marked target and deals 「 (10 + (5 ×Champion's Level)) 」 true damage.
Notice how LB, Graves, Jinx, and Blitz were the only ones without true damage.
BACK INTO PLAT III BOYS, LOL. This is such a hell hole. 400 games in ranked and I've made no progress as of date. Only if if I didn't have trolls during Diamond promos several times. Will see if I have the leisure of reaching Diamond before the season ends. I will probably end up binging Malphite Top, Diana Mid, and Zac Jungle rather than playing champs I feel like during the moment.
ah - thx. Was scratching my head on that one.
Some really good info compiled by a master tier fella. Post explains and shows win rate % by game lengths and groups the data usefully. Some surprising info here and there - interesting at least to me

Well the physics GRE is over so I should be around a lot more. It went pretty poorly but I am not entirely sure that that test can go well no matter how prepared you are. Here is hoping for the 40-50 percentile.
Good luck, mr cow! Hope things turn out better than you think.
Karl - you got into plat 1 out of placement matches? Didn't know that. Anyway, I think you are right about carry junglers being the way to go in lower elos. Carry anything, really. Was playing a game with pete the other day and the enemy team had a jungle yi. I pretty much knew we'd lose the game at that point as there would be enough people to feed him. I'm actually a little surprised that you don't seem to like the carry style junglers (or lean towards the ham build vi). Even for the sake of variety and mixing things up. I'd almost always rather have a jungler that isn't yi on my team, but in solo queue, that's pretty big win potential at this elo. Good luck if you decide to play some more - prob not worth the frustration.
Hope you can make it to Diamond, dan. Diamond Danknee has a nice sound to it.
Zilean bans are a comin... from me anyway. He's going to see a bunch more play with the reworked passive in the near future and god if he isn't useless in lane then a huge PITA late game. On the bright side, he's actually the closest thing we've got to a fun demigod mechanic - being able to give your teammates stuff (in dg it was items - here it will be xp). That could open up some opportunities for interesting things, but I'm not really sure the power levels/how useful it is. Giving a wee bit of xp to someone gives a small adv - giving a full level would be kind of huge. Haven't spec'd it out yet. Anyway, f zil though - juggernaut + zil = plz no.
Out of all the mechanics I've been trying to work on, I'm making the most progress with calling out flash timers. Getting better at it anyway.
@Karl
Vi is a great champ for climbing. You know how to play Vi. You could easily just spam Vi games and get Plat. I'm guessing that instead, you're picking the 'right' champs and builds to fit a teamcomp that would win with good teammates. While playing with goombas.
Ranked rewards are rewards for playing Ranked and not intended as an accurate measure of skill and ability. You don't play much ranked so the system is working as intended. Riot's goal isn't to quickly and efficiently get everyone to their 'correct' League as possible. The more of us 'grinders' that are out there, the happier they are.
Their only concern on the subject of people at the wrong MMR is for when Diamond players had to start the season in Silver and ruin a bunch of games for people on their way up the ladder.
@Cow
Glad you're done with that nonsense! I'd love to take you up on your offer to give me some playing tips when I start playing again. Or just post them here. I'm always open to criticism.
@DanKnee
Sound like great choices to get The D. The Big D. Diamond, not anything Cow was thinking I meant when I said 'The D!'
Good luck man, you can do it. You deserve The D.
@Pacov
I'm sure he meant to say Plat V.
Had a really sub par night of gaming last night. Played solo all night and was pretty much crap. Even lost an easy win aram by the team suiciding instead of killing a base (which would have been my 1 win of the night). Some games felt like my reaction time was off and I just played poorly - other games I was spot on and tweaked, but the rest of the team was under performing.
Still trying to maintain a big focus just on calling out flash timers - still getting better. I've been getting a lot more games with higher elo players tonight. I really wish we could see some mmr stats instead of rank tier stats in normals. There are quite a few people out there that don't play ranked at all or much.
I saw something interesting over at summoner school. Basically a guy was talking about the win rate differential based on spamming games with champions (eg avg win rate with X champ is 40% after 30 games, but jumps to 55% after 120 games).
SNIP:
Here's what I think:
Playing ANY champion a large amount of times is going to yield results. All champions have fairly high winrates when you look only at players who have say 50+ games on that champion.
High skillcap champions are champions whose winrate deviates more from experienced players to novice players. Sometimes this means they have super high winrates for experienced players compared to low skillcap champions but sometimes it just means that novice players do far worse on them.
Here's an examples of what I mean:
Azir[1] goes from 35% winrate to 52% winrate over 125+ games of experience.
Cho'Gath[2] goes from 49% winrate to 53% winrate over 125+ games of experience.
Notice the winrates are very close at the experienced end but very different at the novice end. This is why I don't recommend people to pick up Azir unless they actually enjoy playing him and don't mind the rough curve.
If you're looking to invest time into a high skillcap champion that will win games in solo queue these would be my recommendations:
Riven[3] 47 -> 56% winrate
Rengar[4] 42 -> 57.5% winrate
Twisted Fate[5] 48 -> 57% winrate
Kalista[6] 46 -> 57% winrate
Bard[7] 45 -> 57% winrate
But at the end of the day you should just play whatever champion you find the most fun to play because that's the only way you're going to stick with them and after a certain amount of experience they are all very strong.
I do not recommend Bard at lower levels... He might be okay in gold, but down here in silver, people tend to blow each other's ults up...
Anyone feel like they play tf at a decent level ? Looking at pro builds and champ gG. Champ has boots as highest win rate start. Everyone on pro buids starts Dorans ring. what scenarios would u look to start boots and pots
Boots are mostly for melee matchups since you get "free" blue cards early game or if you're worried about being ganked early since TF has to push to be aggressive and is SUPER squish. You would probably want to go dorans against mage matchups. The boots aren't really for the level 6 teleport since you'll often be hoom/oom.
thx! Anyone else have their ping up about 20 from the norm lately? Went from 30ish to 50sih this past week.
also new championify out - https://github.com/dustinblackman/Championify/releases/tag/1.1.1
also i suck w/ tf
If you're thinking about maining TF, I hope that you stick with it long enough to find some success. He'd be the perfect champion for you.
I'm curious - why do you think that?
- TF is a high skill cap champion but it's not completely about mechanics. You tend to want to try new things all the time so Twisted Fate is someone you could come back to easier than let's say Azir, but would still be fun and rewarding to play. Wouldn't be like "I haven't played Mid in forever... guess I have to play Annie if I don't want to get beat up." Not that Ult Gold Carding is easy to do, but it's easier to pull off when you're rusty than The Shurima Shuffle.
- You gravitate to Support because you want to have something important to do for your team and more control of the games outcome besides just winning your lane. Unfortunately this role tends to have drawbacks that you don't accept, and that leads to you doing things like splitting and using GP/10 Runes to try and get rich playing champions that don't scale well with gold. You try to have the best of both worlds sometimes and don't always embrace the true spirit of being your team's "Support" unless you're playing with much better players than yourself.
Let me introduce you to TF: The Amazing Teleganking Support Carry! When you get good enough with him, you can win every lane including your own. You have unmatched map presence and vision control with your Ult so he's a fantastic split pusher. Even if you don't win early, he still scales pretty damn well. Kinda a U shaped power curve.
-Lotsa skins. You like to have skin options.
Didn't read your response, thunder - will do so though - thx for your thoughts!!!
Fellas - I want to toss this out there. Actually, I'll be really specific really briefly and leave it up to you to put crap together (dr sleepy pacov).
Sometimes I see cow around - I don't shoot him an invite. Sometimes I see karl. I don't send him an invite. Here's why. I group cow/karl in my head together. I do invite karl here and there and he doesn't accept, so I don't invite him often. I assume u kids are hearthstone or don't want to play. You want more invite, speak up by speaking up or accepting more frequently. Tossing this in - boaz reads here from time to time - PDT nope.
2 - I'm going thru an evolution atm in pretty much all roles. I'm looking to be better (eg buhbye plat). That means OMG AWFUL pacov for bit. For instance, tonight karl got to experience my shit TF. Its ok - my tf is shit. I'm trying to learn. Worth noting that I'm not fing around and really trying my best, though. Now, I know karls brain a bit. He joined me and boaz for game tonight in the hopes mr cow would join. Cow was afk, karl chose to be a good dood and play a game. Then karl dipped immediately after that game due to the whoopin. Its cool. I really think PLAY with me if its fun and don't if its not. I don't really like playing super handicapped games either.
Anyway, last thoughts then sleep - any of you that play with me, you can expect my best currently, but my best might be poop. I also might be playing with mr Boaz and pete. So, potential handicap on top of pacov evo handicap. Cow, for instance, saw a boaz/pacov lobby and dipped tonight. That's ok - but I would say this -give it a go here and there ( i guess once a week anyway at least for a game). Honestly, I don't really get mad if people want to dip after a game with me. Its just a little of a bummer if folks cant handle a single game if I'm with a fella.
hahah
I skimmed tonight - saw that and I lol'd. Night bro!
Do you have any match ups in mind? The boots start on TF is generally good against skill shot based champions.
