Update 5/25/2017
Well, I started a thread back in Dec 2011 that’s seen a lot of activity (some 922,000 views over the course of a few years apparently...). That thread had a good deal of tips/strategies/discussions about League of Legends from new and old players alike. You can find the previous thread (now archived) here: https://forums.joeuser.com/413863. I think its time to start fresh with a new thread.
What’s this thread all about? For those that followed the previous thread, the type of content you see here will be fairly consistent to what you are used to. Please consider this a place to discuss LoL related content as you like. I'll do the same and treat the thread as a blog as well where I talk about what’s going on with me in LoL. Feel free to jump in and join the discussion if you like.
Quick background on meI played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011, I started getting heavily involved in League of Legends, and folks from the community were kind enough to help me figure things out. I play LoL most nights, stream, make videos and it’s my main gaming interest.

Well, I really can't say a heck of a lot outside of first impressions atm. I did a bit a research before i decided on a specific model, though. Got the PB287Q-28in asus model. a little under 600.
I highly underwhelmed by the implementation and content of 4k vids atm. Youtube actually seems to have the best implementation I came across. Amazon is shite. Netflix you have to shell out another $5 a month just to try. More in a bit..
For 4k, wait. Too many things that don't like 4k, too much hardware needed to run it, monitors over 28 inches are extremely expensive, and the selection is crap.
If you want a 2560x1440, 28 inches is a good size as long as you've got decent eyes, and good ones can be picked up for around $500. I've got a SyncMaster SA850, Samsung's PLS monitors are quite pretty, if you don't mind a somewhat slower refresh rate than you can get with the visually inferior TN displays. The selection is very poor if you want a fast monitor with a high color gamut, particularly a non 60hz version.
I tend to run a pretty beefy machine, so that too much hardware bit doesn't really seem to apply. I haven't seen any degradation on anything I've tried it on as of yet at max resolution. Running an r9 280 for graphics with an i7-4790k cpu atm.
As far as size goes, I've been running on 2 28s (well a 27 and a 28, now 2 28s) for years. So, while > 28 in monitors are more pricey (kind of what you'd expect, though, right?), also not really much of a factor in deciding to get a new updated 28.
60hz seems to be pretty much the standard at this time and it looks great - granted I've been running at 60hz on my previous monitors as well, so zero diff. I will say that out of the box my new monitor was config'd at 30hz (took 2 min to change up) and let me tell you - 30 mhz is god freaking awful - probably on any modern monitor but very certainly on a 4k one. Make sure w/e you get is at least able to do 60hz. Also, be wary of the dimensions when shopping. There as some monitors that are in a crazy widescreen format that's kind of off - eg like really wide and not as tall as it should be.
I can say that the image quality is great and its a night and day comparison between my old monitor and this one. Things are much more crisp... but again, you'd expect that at higher rez. Worth it? well, I mean, if you need a new monitor, sure. I like this one, to be sure. Didn't really need a 4k, but its nice.
Yeah i'm not super sold on 4K (i've heard about games not handling it super well from various sources) but figured 2K was pretty reasonable and a nice jump up
You're happy with the R9-280? Gonna pick up a the R9-390 that was just released.
MSI has one with great one that has supposedly fantastic cooling. And it's partially overclocked so it's only ~40 MHz slower than the 390X (and missing 10% of the Stream Proccesors and TexUnits). But giving up < 10% performance (and only in newer games with a lot of textures/particles/shaders) for a 33% reduction in price seems pretty sweet.

An NVidia GTX 970 "might" be better for the type of gaming that i typically do (eg, 1080p where 8 GB of RAM isn't very useful), but the GTX-970 (same price as the R9-390) supposedly starts falling behind once you play 2K or play the brand-newest games. Going up to the GTX-980 is much more expensive and would only give small increases at 2K.
i generally keep with smaller monitors (been on a 24.4" since the Demigod days). But definitely looking at picking up a 2K... supposedly FreeSync is supposed to fix a lot of the issues when you have > 60 FPS on a 60 Hz monitor or < 144 FPS on a 144 Hz monitor. But the FreeSync monitors are like $500 \:
So probably going to wait until Black Friday for the monitor, but this one looks pretty sweet (i don't like Acer for anything but monitors but have loved them so far): http://www.amazon.com/Acer-XG270HU-omidpx-FREESYNC-Widescreen/dp/B00VRCLHYS/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1435257238&sr=8-7&keywords=acer+144hz
yeah - I'm happy with it. Can handle everything I've thrown at it and overclocked quite well awhile back when I was got in a "testing crap out" mood. When I'm out to buy a new card, I typically research what's coming out and read the reviews of what is out - including searches for things like "card name crash" or "card name gray screen" or "card name overclock" and see what I can see. I usually use tom's hardware as my goto place to figure out what card I want. They do a best buy for X month every month or so - worth a look if you don't use it already. Very good site.
I had an acer laptop years and years ago - was a POS. Nothing against their monitors anyway I can say that the biggest wow factor for me years ago was bumping up the size of my monitor. 28in w/e is going to pop for you. This 4k stuff is neat and all and I can see it become the standard, but its not overwhelming. Still - one does tend to have monitors for awhile - no issue dropping some extra dough for a good one if you want to
Just tried out the new aram map on PBE - it looks really good, though its like 2 patches away form release. As it is, it looks like a finished product. Sad to say that the new nud didn't do jack for the 4k issues. New hud will take some getting used to for all btw, but its pretty slick
just saw this too - we are getting allied ultimate timers:
So, I joined in game chat channels in lol during the pool party event to help rack up points by playing with a group of 5 every game.
With the extra IP weekend LIVE right now, you might want to do the same if enough of us aren't on for a full group, etc. This is a great time to get IP if you need it or just to farm up an alt account if you are into that sort of thing. For those that don't know, this weekend you get extra ip based on the number of people in your group - the more in your group, the more ip. Here's a list of channels from reddit. I'm highlighting the ones I used in the last event. Def use the ARAMLFG channel if you are just wanting to get an aram in. FYI, if a channel is full, just add a 1,2,3 etc, to the name and try again. For instance if ARAMLFG is full, try to join ARAMLFG1, and so on.

Any thoughts BASED on experience with runeglaive? Mine are mixed so far, but limited experience. Any thoughts on elise after buffs based on experience?
... and back to top lane at long last (sorry, busy and easily distracted lately)
I'm not super I'm all that into the whole smite/tp top lane discussion, but we can go there as it is somewhat interesting. I think it still works on certain champs, usually with an emphasis on champs with mobility that will suffer less for having no flash. I could easily run it on riven/yas, but I'm not sure I'd want to.
I'm actually more into thinking through and pondering flash/ignite top laners again... and flip flopping a bit. The problem I'm having when running flash/ign, is determining when to rotate/group (just something I'm kinda smeh with). I'm quite a bit better with that when I have tp. I know its difficult to boil this down, but lets say I have a split push top laner - we'll say tynd. Any thoughts on when is the appropriate time to group vs staying for a split? Keep in mind this is solo queue where either the enemy team could have a good engage comp or the 4 other people on your team could be dummies and decide its time to start a fight even though our 5th is top lane about to work on a tower. I don't know... I guess any rules folks can think of specifically for 2 things - 1 a split pusher with flash. 2 - a split pusher w/ ignite.
add madcast pacov if you like. going to be playing on that. 1 15 min aram - 213 IP with a 5 person party. Not including fwot
162 ip for a loss in aram. lots of ip
bought a boost - 1 aram game 397 ip. 11 min game - not including fwotd.
its not like i'm getting 825 ip a game or anything
Day 1 recap - 5,477 ip gained
Day 2 recap - 7,942 ip gained. Last day today i think
well, not sure what my day 3 total is, but I'm all done now. I used some rp to buy another rune page, I bought ekko/sion/raka/janna with ip. I currently have 3 rune games, 1 AD no AS, 1 AP, and 1 ADC w attack speed page. I think I've got this account into good enough shape and managed to waste a bunch of time doing this silly leveling I love so much.
Anyway, back to normal games tomorrow. really missing the rift games. Prob a little rusty for a few games, but I'm raring to go. Might still play a few on my alt, but will prob hop back to main tomorrow and be looking for games. Hope everyone had a good weekend. Night all
Well, it was nice to play with you fellas again... even if I was quite terrible. Sorry about the last game - did not expect 30 + minutes and I was stuck trying to play the game and jump on and off conference calls... bad decision on my part. Still was a fun. Really dig that new zac skin.
That majestic donger though
^^ Seems pretty obvious that cow missed a great naming opportunity. Always nice when you see one and LOL. Anyway, I really enjoyed the game we played last night where I was morg. Broke out my selfish GDM kit and we face rolled em bot.
I'm kind of going through a f other lanes phase right this second and wanting to play out of my comfort zone if I have a choice. I'm currently lacking the patience/skill for top on my main, at least. I might flop back to my alt for if I'm thinking of working on top. Most of my problems are due to bone headed decisions after having a pretty strong start. For instance, most of the time when I play yasuo, I can crush it in lane and at the very least win enough trades where I can control the lane or get a kill. BUT THEN... I very, very often don't respect the dmg output from folks and continue to play much more aggressive than I should. Just need to that sweet spot where I get a lead and then keep it wisely.
Also team builder... more like hey I'm going to try out that stupid ezreal smite builder, amir? Every time I queued up for tb yesterday, I left the queue pretty quickly when I saw a shitty ez.... had to do that a min of twice per queue up and once 5 times just to not have an ez on my team. FOTM usually don't annoy me much, but this one does.
Anyway, the long holiday weekend starts (hopefully in 4-5 hours for me). Looking forward to it. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

craps I like.
Holy crap, Cloud 9 with the meltdown of the year this morning. I did not expect that. So sad.
man I've been looking for VOD of a game they played.. which they didn't play. Just talking about the meteos bit then eh
Lol, I was just checking out new stuff on Steam and saw that one of my most played games ever suddenly appeared:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/352700/
I was playing that game in 1996. Surprised its still around, although it seems like all the remaining people are in the stupid newbie zones.

I totally remember playing that game.
Learned something new about the updated hud - in addition to being able to see teammate ult time cooldowns, you can see summoner spell timers by pressing tab (your team only)
