Update 5/25/2017
Well, I started a thread back in Dec 2011 that’s seen a lot of activity (some 922,000 views over the course of a few years apparently...). That thread had a good deal of tips/strategies/discussions about League of Legends from new and old players alike. You can find the previous thread (now archived) here: https://forums.joeuser.com/413863. I think its time to start fresh with a new thread.
What’s this thread all about? For those that followed the previous thread, the type of content you see here will be fairly consistent to what you are used to. Please consider this a place to discuss LoL related content as you like. I'll do the same and treat the thread as a blog as well where I talk about what’s going on with me in LoL. Feel free to jump in and join the discussion if you like.
Quick background on meI played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011, I started getting heavily involved in League of Legends, and folks from the community were kind enough to help me figure things out. I play LoL most nights, stream, make videos and it’s my main gaming interest.

Ah - I think that makes sense. Let's take this further though. Is the animation itself sped up to correspond with attack speed? I THINK so... think so... at any rate, I agree - I was incorrect re: the added damage - its increased damage potential based on mobility/positioning only.
re: spells and canceling - yeah, there are quite a few of those as well and I really don't know all the possible combos. I think that's worth calling out - be nice if things like this were perhaps covered in champ guides maybe. Not that it would be much use as I don't really read the guides so much and just figure out crap from vids mostly atm.
Pretty sure you already get the riven concept, but to tack on. the combo is AA-Q-move command, repeat. Q cancels the auto attack animation and the move command cancels the q spell animation. Riven's kind of neat as her E cancels out the animation on pretty much everything and you can flash combo and have a stun go off the exact moment you land from a flash making it ridiculously hard to dodge.
I'd def be curious to figure out what spells can have their animations canceled with move commands, etc. Kind of going through a few champs here and there and trying to figure them out.
Yes, wind-up and wind-down animations are reduced by AS (how much a per-champ basis and i know a few times Riot has balanced around it - my understanding is that it is coded more for ... aesthetics and clarity than for balance since perfect wind-down cancelling only applies to Scipters and LCS matches with 0 ping).
This is why AS quints are so good on ADCs post-buff. Not only are AS quints BiS in terms of damage, it gives you """free""" MS in kiting/chasing situations when you are kiting since your wind-up is 0.1 seconds shorter. That benefit is doubled if you aren't Challenger and properly animation-cancelling.
On a random thought: it'd be hilarious if CDR reduced spell animation duration
mf's q does not aa cancel - can only be strung together with aa - nothing fancy here.
?
What were you thinking was different or could be done?
I read that it functioned as an AA reset I think - then I toyed around with her yesterday and found that was not the case.
we have an application at work called NAR that I can't stop calling GNAR in email #lolruinedme
GAHNAR
A lot of MF players don't take Attack Speed Quints since you can get three quick autos (if you count the Q as an AA) off from cancelling the animations. AA-Q-Move Command-AA. At least it feels fast? If you want to test it out today, we can see for sure. We both play MF without Attack Speed Quints. You orbwalk two attacks and I'll AA-Q-MC-AA. I think my combo would go off faster than your two attacks but I'd like to know for sure.
I think Hedgie is right. Riven and Leona are special cases that allow for completely uninterrupted combinations. There always will be some delay with AA resetting on any other champ for the attack after the ability or empowered attack, but I think it's significantly mitigated.
That's the wrong way to test if MF's Q is an AA reset (which i'm pretty sure it is)
Both of you should run 0 AS quints/masteries and fuck around in bots for a bit so that you can buy a Frozen Heart + Warden's Mail.
Then, attack-move-click eachother from out of range. ONE of you should issue a Q command immediately after AAing. The other shouldn't.
If Q is an AA reset then both MFs then the 2nd MF should attack slightly faster with her 2nd autoattack. If both AAs occur at the same time, we know it isn't an AA reset.
Technically, you don't have to have the AS reduction items, but it'll help smooth any errors from ping or difficulty perceiving tiny differences.
If you don't issue the attack for Leona after her empowered AA, she doesn't immediately do the third attack. There is a fast harass combo for MF where you Q an opponent then immediately click on him which almost instantly AA's him. If you don't click right away, you don't cancel the Q animation and your follow up attack is a lot slower. So to get the full effect you have to do something afterward when getting the most out of this sort of thing.
What's wrong with testing out AA-MC-AA against AA-Q-MC-AA? Sounds like a great idea using 0 attack speed but getting the FH first might be a little overboard.
I'm looking to see how much more effective resets are on sending off the auto attack after, not proving to Pacov that Q is an auto attack reset. After hearing him use the term 'skill cap' inaccurately for the millionth time, I've given up on arguing semantics with him. Maybe he thinks only Riven and Leona have his definition of AA resets. And that's fine. What matters is what gives you more DPS, not definitions of game mechanics.
Ill just keep using my flat AD quints like a boss since I suck at last hitting as it is.
sounds like that's a free dragon, my friend. Also, don't bother replying to me on this as I have no idea whatcha fellas are on about.
Do let me know if you figure out anything cool once you putz around with her in game. I was toying around yesterday and didn't really figure out much.
man... I've been quite a bit more busy than I'd like lately with work stuff.
Anyway, I'm kind of in a slump with lol. I expect that will end soon, but I think I'm just playing like smeh in general.... or if I'm on point (a bit more rare lately), then I'm having a team failing most other places. Was nice to just blow off some steam and play some arams w/ pals last night. I'm about do for playing a bit better, though. Need to get in at least a ranked to sort elo decay soon. Anyway, I'll be on later tonight.
Sorry you're in a slump. Maybe you should get back into playing Ranked again?
Get's you accurate feedback which helps you improve because you're playing with people who are mostly at your skill level, give or take.
Let's you take games with friends less seriously, cause you can just say "Well, that's too bad my team has failed yet again. No worries though cause it wasn't Ranked."
Right now none of your games are Ranked, so you don't have a place to funnel all your competitiveness.
off topic. Just something really good imo. Song - enjoyable and worth listening to LOUDLY. Never heard before and I think it sums up an emotion all of us have had at one point or another quite nicely. Don't ff or you'll prob just end up watching again like I did.
Played a few solo queue against my better judgement late last night. Went 3-1 thought I would check out the new and improved LP gain/loss that was advertised on this patch. Seems like my MMR is below where it should be so I am not getting really any different gains but the game I did lose wasn't -30 points which was encouraging. I might attempt getting diamond 4 again but idk if its worth the pain.
Anyways I won 2 and lost 1 with Bard. Squeeked out a win on Renekton versus a very scaled late game team (Nasus, varus, nidalee, vayne if I remember right). We had a super hero lucian who had like 17 kills but I definitely helped out with key CC's in team fights and I kept the dog down as much as I could in lane despite being ganked twice and killed twice during the early game where I recieved zero help from the jungler (starting to know what it feels like to be dyrus). I was 20-30 cs ahead of nasus a few times but he still scaled into the late game monster (even more evident since our team was full AD).
Bard games I felt like I carried both of the games we won. I made play after play with my stun and magical journy's. I saved several people and myself with my ulti a few times in team fights. My favorite was my mid was at like 1/10 hp and I ulted him + 3 bad guys. Malz was able to flash out as the rest of our team piled on CC and he lived. Felt real good.
Well that's cool you got 3 wins. I know bard's seeing more usage lately, but while he's fun, I'm just not digging him as much as other supports due to his inconsistency. It's great when it all comes together, less great when you land cc 1 time in lane, then flub your ult, etc. Quite satisfying when you get it done, though. I personally don't pull off his ult well consistently at any rate. Glad you are having success with him though!
Bard's ult really gives you a lot of control over situations. It has so many uses that its hard to explain.
You can stop flanks by ulting the flanker.
You can save your carry if he miss positions by ulting everyone including him with the hopes that he can reposition after the duration or flash away or be saved by teammates CC.
You can catch people and chain CC them after the ult comes up.
You can bait with yourself and ulti yourself (did this in one of the wins I had yesturday).
You can split enemy teams in half during team fights
You can use it to zone enemies into walking a certain way to avoid the ult (hopefully back into your team or get zhonya'd being there options.
You can ult a ganker and stop him from kill you and your ADC
You can ult towers/baron/dragon to give your team a little more time to get to the objective to contest
The situations go on and on. The problem that his ult has is that you can really turn good situations in to horrible ones. Lets say your vlad just ulted there enemy team and you ulted on top of it.... There goes all of vlads damage. This can happen with just about every AOE ultimate in the game and its aweful when it goes bad.
Other bad times to ult are on low health enemies. You just gave him the chance to escape via flash or movement skill. Good job bro. Prepare to be flamed for 2-3 minutes by your teammates.
Every bad Bard ult is rediculed by your teammates and every good one is pretty much ignored since you are a support and supports never get a pat on the back
hunnybadger lives!
just reappeared tonight and did some arams. Hit me up for chat but I missed him. Hopefully he's back in the game.
Met some more folks tonight via the reddit LFG channels for the pool party stuff. Met a really nice guy I enjoyed playing with. solid skill cap and really nice/positive.
Championify - stand alone program that imports the most commonly used items per champ, per patch along with commonly picked ability order. Used it for awhile now and they just put out a new version recently. Check if out if you like

Played a bit with the reddit crowd and some MC folks last night. While this goofy event has been going on, I've been trying to get in as many games with groups of 5 as possible. Reddit has some chat channels in the league client that I've been using with mixed results (some really cool folks, some asshats). Anyway, if you want to use the channels, just use GOLDLFG OR PLATINUMFLG. If you specifically want to do arams, you can use ARAMLFG (OR LFGARAM - I don't remember which, but it should be obvious).
Was going to ranked elo decay (for those that don't know, now you get daily messages indicating your elo decay will start in X days starting about 9 days before you decay), so I got in a game. I played ok as morg supp, but nothing special. Got carried quite a bit by an ekko jungle of all things -running tp/smite).
Been putzing around a little bit with trynd top, but I'm pretty sure I'm smeh.
Yeah, I've been making a few new friends to play with as well from this 'goofy event' so I guess it's pretty cool. Kinda interesting how much Riot seems to want people to make connections with other players and to play with the friends they do have. Almost like... they feel it's good for the game and their business. Huh.
Well, on a totally unrelated note... did you ever figure out that mystery on why Riot never put in an Offline mode that would let you hide from your friends and not play with them?
did you ever figure out that mystery on why Riot never put in an Offline mode that would let you hide from your friends and not play with them?
Nope - it still doesn't make much sense to me. I honestly don't see any reason why they wouldn't just patch it up properly... I could patch it up better than they have (they just seem to change the pathing of files as opposed to locking it down). That said, I doubt anyone gets a ban for such thing though I suppose they could.
You fellas missed out. So, I went and played 1 more game after everyone buggered off. We played 1 game with her - Lisaaaa - then folks went to bed, etc. I played 1 more. We had a hard fought win and she gave everyone on the team a mystery skin. I was a little surprised and decided to check her stats - http://na.op.gg/summoner/userName=Lisaaaa. Seems like an actually really, really good player. Win rates in ranked last reason where exceptional. KDA so so. Didn't really stand out to me in game, but I appreciated the gesture, friended her saying I hope to catch her again soon sometime, and gifted her a mystery skin as well (queen ashe). Anyway, was nice. Think that's the first time I've received a mystery gift from a stranger post game. Nice feels.
looks like no pool party mundo
So, random news 1st - I run a dual monitor setup, 1 monitor seems to be on the way out (eg dying). I decided to upgrade my main display as such. Going with a beast - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KJGY3TO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
ASUS PB287Q 28in. My other monitors were 28 and 27, so easy change over I think.
Anyway, other topics that I'll jump back to soon... top lane theory and observations. I think my top lane concepts are evolving quite a bit.
short summary is before I took safe champs and played off of that - now I'm starting to get nitty gritty with more melees and thinking about how I'm playing the lane and is ecology. blahbalbhal... anyway, I think i have lots to jibber about. more later
