Update 5/25/2017
Well, I started a thread back in Dec 2011 that’s seen a lot of activity (some 922,000 views over the course of a few years apparently...). That thread had a good deal of tips/strategies/discussions about League of Legends from new and old players alike. You can find the previous thread (now archived) here: https://forums.joeuser.com/413863. I think its time to start fresh with a new thread.
What’s this thread all about? For those that followed the previous thread, the type of content you see here will be fairly consistent to what you are used to. Please consider this a place to discuss LoL related content as you like. I'll do the same and treat the thread as a blog as well where I talk about what’s going on with me in LoL. Feel free to jump in and join the discussion if you like.
Quick background on meI played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011, I started getting heavily involved in League of Legends, and folks from the community were kind enough to help me figure things out. I play LoL most nights, stream, make videos and it’s my main gaming interest.

Yeah that has always been an annoying thing about morgana's spell sheild especially when shes played mid. She was nearly ungankable because of it. You had to go through a full spell rotation to remove the shield and to get rid of it you most likely used your CC.
Anyways I see this as a huge nerf and expect morgana to fall out of popularity because of it. She will still be good at creating picks but the safety net that she provides ADC's is going to be drastically lowered. Shes needed a tuning down for a while now though.
I think I might start favoring ziggs over brand again. The mana changes to athene's REALLY seems to have helped him. I have played him 4-5 times now with the new athene's and he feels way better than he used too... If I had to compare the two:
Brand experiences 3 power spikes:
After that he sort of scales boringly and I don't notice WTF I DO MORE DAMAGE with each item purchase.
Ziggs has 1 huge power spike:
At this point in the game ziggs scales through the roof. Each new item just adds so much more damage to his kit and you really notice in team fights when you hit a cluster of 4 people with a Q and all of there health bars drop by 1/5.
I think brand is much stronger early and mid game than ziggs and brand can snow ball completely out of control during these parts of the games. Ziggs on the other hand needs games to go into late game with good farm and or money from kills/towers so he can hit the big items. If he gets there his wave clear and team fight presences are greater than brands.
Ziggs also has strong zone control for taking objectives and very strong tower pushing abilities.
I think brands biggest check mark over ziggs is hes very inexpensive item wise. If you get your liandries and rylai's you will always be a problem for the enemy team. These items make him scale with the opponents tanks because brand will be doing a lot of precent health damage from his passive and liandries. Squishies will die the entire game (unless they purchase defensive items) by a full rotation of his spells.
I think ziggs is a better pick than brand right now but not by much. I think team comp wise they both sort of fit into the same kinds of team comps although I think brand is better at brawly team comps than ziggs is. Brand can also create picks since most people do not respect the range of his w + q stun combo. I have caught people dozens of times when they reach out a little to far.
Anyways the are both fun champions with tons of outplay potential with the way there kits are designed. Some of the funnest moments is getting ganked 2v1 with these champions. The both have ways to get out of these situations with possible kills. Ziggs is safer but brand has higher double kill potential.
riots says the morgana thing is an error
In the recent 5.8 patch, an unintended change for Morgana's spell shield was added - the change made it so the CC effects of a hostile ability to go through if the ability is strong enough to totally eliminate the shield where as the intended behavior is the shield will break but the CC effect will still be cancelled.Riot Riscx has confirmed the unintended change and noted team is working on a fix.
"We're working on putting out a fix for this. Was not intended."
I'm kind of digging some of the aram changes. The snowball spell is great (currently worth mentioning it when you hit the ARAM lobby as folks don't all know its there yet - "Oo snowball"). I like that you can ff at 15... though, frankly, I don't play enough arams that I'd ff often... kind of think the games either over because it has literally ended or its not and probably could go either way if someone is a dummy. That seems like an appropriate change. Not really sure how much of an impact/how worth it was to change the minion health/scaling, though. I do like that I can build warmog's now.
Anyone try the new BC out? Anyone notice a major diff on BotRK? I got BC on urgot... but that was only an aram.
Anyway, I think I've just about had my fill of LAN. I think I'll probably try to get FWOTD semi regularly for now, but transition back to NA.
Last, I'm looking to change ISPs and am a little concerned it will have a negative impact on LoL... which is kind of a big deal to me anyway. Riot worked with my current ISP and now my ping is between 60-85 somewhat regularly. No idea what I'll end up with, but I'm currently looking at AT&T uverse. Anyone have that or have had it and they were poop?
oh - and if any of the folks I play with regularly want to, hit me up with a mystery gift swap. Do so and I'll send you one back. I think I've got 2-3 worth I can swap.
Sharplet: Top
Karl: Jungle
Gotnades: Mid
Thunder: Kalista or feed. And feed to be honest.
You're the groups Support now Cow. You're stuck bot lane with a dumpster Kalista whether you like it or not Cow. Welcome to hell bitch! Muhahahahaha!
Seriously though? Seems like Brand and Ziggs fulfill similar roles. Not that I'm an expert on either or mid at all but it seems like Brand would win out in this meta cause his tank killing edge. In Plat+ games, they seem to counter and be countered by similar champions. The one main exception that I saw was Cho. Ziggs bends over for Cho while Brand usually beats Cho..
I think it sent Urgot back into being a niche Zed counter.
Urgot's old build was pretty eloquent. Rush Tear/Manamune then Brutalizer. Then you could go into FH/Cleaver in whatever order was appropriate. That Muramana/Frozen/Cleaver 1.0 powerspike was insane since you became a tanky tank killer. Who also still killed the squishies you had been bullying earlier.
Now? Cleaver 2.0 isn't anything Urgot wants until it's completed. If you just tack the new Cleaver onto the old build, you pay for a lot of health that you don't want and 15 CDR that you can't use. All to take much longer and pay more to do exactly what you did before.
So Urgot Mid and Top are probably done until the Koreans figure out how to build him. Maybe IBG instead of FH so you don't have too much excess CDR?
Urgot ADC... Cleaver 2.0 might actually make him a bit better if you go similar to the old Genji style of leaving the 'Blue' out of the build.
My bard mechanics were on point last night though
sounds like riot pushed out a hot fix last night - assuming its morg/bard fixes at least. (morg was black shield prob and bard couldn't self cast his heals).
My Urgot Thesis Update:
Yeah, looks like the Koreans are just leaving Brutalizer out of the ADC build and the best NA Urgot player favors leaving out FH.
I'm looking at Urgot as a possible backup to playing Kalista since she's getting more popular as a pick or ban. However, I'm under the impression that some folks in my usual playing group might consider him a crappy pick.
Just so it's clear I think Urgot ADC is going to be very good with these Cleaver changes and I'm planning on using him in Ranked if it goes well in Normal games. I might be running him in our Normal games if I'm our ADC and just want to make it clear right now that I'm not trying to troll you guys for picking champions that I don't like or to goof off with.
Happy to play another role or practice on my own if everyone isn't on board with it.
I don't think I'm opposed to urgot if you have a decent skill cap - seems like you have been doing fine so far. To me, its more of a specific pick though that works with your team instead of an I'm urgot sort of thing. I'm actually a bit more comfortable with him as a mid than an adc (which I think is weird, but is how i feel), but he seems to have the majority of his play out of the adc roll. I don't really know what the requirements are for a comp to have urgot as an adc. The build usually sucks a bit at taking turrets which is what adcs are good at. I wonder if it needs jung help a bit or what - don't really know.
so... urgot leona, urgot naut?
I kind of dig the new thresh skin recall
and
prob the best/luckiest juke I've seen
oh and champion mastery has apparently been live in brazil for abit. Prob hitting NA next week (...few days from now)
well I had just an absolutely horrible day of league. Lost 5 ranked matches in a row and I am sure my LP is back to shit levels. I was finally starting to even out at about 18 per win and 22 per loss. Now I am sure it will be 10-11 on a win and back to -30 on a loss. FUCK THIS STUPID GAME.
Good faux ama re: tribunal with Lyte - worth a read if you are interested in such things: https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/34szvq/riot_lyte_tribunal_qa/
Here's a sample
Q: How do you monitor banning intentional feeders/trolls?
A: We've begun testing a system capable of identifying gameplay toxicity like intentional feeders/trolls. In North America, for example, hundreds of intentional feeders are insta-banned after 2 games. We're slowly going to ramp up the system until it can detect more nuanced intentional feeding but right now, you rarely see intentional feeding like the old days with 5 Zeals and 0-20 scores.
I'm kind of looking forward to champion mastery. I like that you get rewards and its cool in that is also promotes playing more champs (double edged sword there, but still).
champion mastery to hit live soonish... http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/features/champion-mastery-coming-live-soon
Best Case: More clutter on the loading screen.
Worst Case: Another reason to rage at teammates for their picks in Ranked. "No mastery badge on our Vayne player?! GG ff at 20."
i dunno, i think it'd be cool to have Velkoz, Anivia and Gnar badges
Not to mention mastery badges "might" be one of the best ways to make your teammates relax when you do stuff like Quinn top or Shaco jungle.
Maybe for you. I actually enjoy grinding out levels, etc, so this is kind of fun for me at any rate.
yah - mostly happy thoughts from me as well. Today anyway..
OH - don't forget to get your 1 IP 2015 MSI summoner icon. In the store now.
Excellent point! Guess I was looking at the glass as half empty.
Still not going to be looking forward to 'P' during Pacov's upcoming A-Z Champion Mastery Collection games.
pantheon should be fine anyway... lollipoppy though...
kids on reddit are getting excited about ping again. Saying riot servers are poo and that's why MSI is on LAN servers.
Ping on NA for me anyway is always better on LAN, but the difference is much smaller now. 30-40 ping on LAN for me. 60-80 ping on NA. Much better than it was before anyway..
Been watching this a bit today. It's a coaching session with a challenger player showing someone how to adc. It's like an hour and a half long. Lots of good tips, theory, etc.
champion mastery is live on NA now.
If that guy is really in silver, his luck is worse than mine...
He probably is Silver. I think most people are 'stuck' where they're at cause they're inconsistent, not because they're stupid and don't have any dexterity.
I guess one of the things I take away from videos like that are "Play like a Challenger player is watching." all the time. His concentration and effort was at 100% during the lesson so he was playing well would be my guess.
Yeah - I tend to think the same sort of thing. Grants, its more difficult to pull yourself out of some places than others in my experience (I think silver was more difficult for me than gold for instance).
I particularly liked the specific things he was calling out regarding auto attacks and spacing with supports. Re: aa's on graves, he said you pretty much always want to go for AA > q >> AA instead of another pattern. A little tip like that is common sense for some of us, but when you think about it and really prioritize pulling that off, your dps goes up. And we were are talking about winning trades, that means a bit.
re: spacing with supports, he also made a fairly obvious point, but again, when you think about it and put it into practice regularly, it makes a ton of sense and is helpful to always keep in mind. Try to stay parallel with your support (ex draw a line up and down, put your support at one point on that line and you on the other). Try to keep that symmetry as possible. There's a bit more to it than that as you and the support, while staying on that line, should move that "line" left and right in response to the creeps and the enemy - BUT, proper positioning with someone like graves means that you don't have to dash in to catch up and do damage... you can instead burst a champ and then use the dash to follow for a kill get. Anyway, I'm going to make a go of things and try to keep even with my support or with my adc and see how that plays out. The principal makes sense (be close enough to be safe but also always be close enough to respond to a play).
