Update 5/25/2017
Well, I started a thread back in Dec 2011 that’s seen a lot of activity (some 922,000 views over the course of a few years apparently...). That thread had a good deal of tips/strategies/discussions about League of Legends from new and old players alike. You can find the previous thread (now archived) here: https://forums.joeuser.com/413863. I think its time to start fresh with a new thread.
What’s this thread all about? For those that followed the previous thread, the type of content you see here will be fairly consistent to what you are used to. Please consider this a place to discuss LoL related content as you like. I'll do the same and treat the thread as a blog as well where I talk about what’s going on with me in LoL. Feel free to jump in and join the discussion if you like.
Quick background on meI played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011, I started getting heavily involved in League of Legends, and folks from the community were kind enough to help me figure things out. I play LoL most nights, stream, make videos and it’s my main gaming interest.

Once again your scientific method is lacking.
The only true way to know what you play best when drunk is to play Ranked while sloshed. 25-30 Ranked games after taking shots should let you know pretty well which roles you truly excel at while inebriated.
Science.
Anyway, I've gotta tell you, my usual band of knuckleheads is somewhat troublesome lately. So, I've mostly been wanting to play support lately (changes every few weeks or so, but I'm kind of into it atm). Anyway, highly specialized folks are troubling for my goal of playing support. I get bannick, now he can only play support or jungle (to be fair, I think he can only play support at a good level, but haven't seen him jungle well - just going by what he says). Anyway, then I have boaz - he's been around a bit more lately. He can play the always banned sejuani at an ok skill cap... typically out of jungle, but he'll go wherever. So, if you want a sejuani and you got the 1 game in 99 that she wasn't banned out, grats. Now, toss in my good buddy karl. Karl can play w/e at a serviceable level barring adc, but prefers jungle. So, I know if I take support, then bannick will want to jungle, then blahblahblahblahbalhblahblahblahblahbalh. BLEH
Anyway, I run the variables anytime I have this crew and I pretty much need not play support. I can solve the boaz deal by playing blind pick I think.... not that I really want to do that. Or team builder I suppose. Anyway, better to have problems like that instead of having pals to play with methinks.
Huh? I don't understand this sentence.
Anyway, keep in mind it's not always easy for us. You often offer to fill in games despite being the one who got the team together, so no one begrudges you staking out a role whenever you want to play something.
It's when a game goes south cause people are playing off roles and you get frustrated. That's not ideal for me personally.
"Okay, the other team got their third Dragon, we don't have any. Okay, they're way ahead of us on towers. Okay we're about to lose yet another tower and I guess we're not going to get anything accomplished in return..."
I know you are trying to be constructive and helpful and get people focused on turning things around, but sometimes the things you call out are simply unavoidable when you're on the team that's losing badly.
To which I can't help but think to myself "If Pacov cares so much about winning, why didn't he let the Plat Support Main play Support? And have our Plat Jungle Main play jungle?"
Can't you just go into a game thinking "Okay, we might lose this Normal Draft game cause we're playing off roles. But we're going to all be getting better from playing out of our comfort zone so who cares." Trying to adopt that would seem like the best solution to your dilemma.
huh.. i just checked the refer a friend website.. apparently I earned the ww and the twitch skin.... I had no idea as I don't think I've ever solicited folks with my user id (eg... hurm....). Anyway, its there. You don't get any rewards until you go to the website and click redeem.
If you are interested in checking on your status (eg see if you earned any rewards, google refer a friend LOL and log in.
You only need to refer 3 friends for the ww skin and 5 for the twitch skin (must reach level 10). I think I've already earned the max skins, but I'll post this anyway i guess...
referral link for dr pacov.. and I've earned all the crap, so this is a waste I think...

edit - i just checked my acct - both skins posted like 5 min after I redeemed. Anyway, check yours out and see if you qualify.
@thunder - I thought I responded to you but apparently did not. The short version is that I was just whinging about not being able to play support when I invited certain folks even though I wanted to play support. For instance, if you only played support/jungle, I'd want to put you in that role. If someone else joins that also does support and jungle, then I'm a pisser for taking either of those roles as I already have those roles filled up. So, I can't play the role I'm interested in and I generally don't feel like telling people I won't play with them because I want to play support and you can only do that, etc. Thank god riot has a built in Offline button.... Not a big deal at any rate, just whinging as this is more and more common with the folks I'm running w/.
All that said, I get your point re: me being negative about missed objectives, etc, and that being super fun to hear.
Anyway, I was really surprised to see that I had gotten those skins. If I start up another smurf acct, I'd be happy to get one of you credit. If I remember right, you used to have to get crazy referrals to get those skins - now its like 3 and 5 people to level 10... kind of easy to do I'd think.
take a look over here: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Champion_skin/Skin_themes
I'm wondering if we have enough people with enough skins to play one of these sets:
Other than Graves
Other than classic Gangplank and Miss Fortune:
Other than Fizz, Nami and Nautilus:
Just going through some of my reddit stuff I marked to check out later. One thing I came across: http://www.trackingthepros.com/soloq-online
Go here and you can see the top challenger players in the world, what champ they are currently playing, how far along they are in the game and spectate.
another thing I'm liking about team builder - the swing in what you play w/ and against is kind of wild. I get a chance to play with master/challenger level players a few times a week.
power of evil midlane varus guide I'm reading -http://www.lolking.net/guides/341508
boaz just went on a 4 game win streak and hit gold V again.
Ironically he fought against a sej in his last game as amumu. The sej was mentally handicapped and his team pretty much stomped.
grinding out levels on LAN tonight - pacov over there as well.
Normal matchmaking on LAN for 1 game. Let me know what strikes you.
If you get a level 1, you also get 2 elo boosters and a diamond 5. I mean.. what...
I think we are getting patched this week. ffat20 has the details
http://www.surrenderat20.net/p/58-pbe-cycle.html
of note - ryze passive remote amongst other things, "dash" in aram (think poro king summoner), Chroma packs, texture updates, new skins
As mentioned here, several new individual "Quick cast with Indicator" keybind options options have been added for spells, items, summoner spells, etc. + self cast variations. While this targeting option has been in the game for a while, you can now bind individual abilities or items this way and other actions another way instead of having it be all or nothing.
For those wondering, these are the three different cast types in LoL:
Champion mastery added but likely not enabled right away.
mystery ward, mystery icon gifts added to store.
Blade of the Ruined King
The Black Cleaver
Recipe: Phage + Kindlegem + 825 gold (3000 gold total)
400 HP 40 AD 20% CD Unique Passive - Dealing physical damage to an enemy champion Cleaves them, reducing their Armor by 5% for 6 seconds (stacks up to 6 times, up to 30%). Unique passive - Rage - "Dealing physical damage grants 20 movement speed for 2 seconds. Assists on Cleaved enemy champions or kills on any unit grant 60 movement speed for 2 seconds instead. This Movement Speed is halved for ranged champions (Unique Passives with the same name don't stack.)
It's probably expecting a lot to hope that the system can accurately guess the MMR of every smurf who is stomping LAN beginners. The KDA's of Plat V and Diamond V players who have been playing against pre-30 players is probably fairly similar, so you probably are going to face more and more good players now that you're marked as an El Smurforino.
What I think has happened is that I'm in a lower priority queue (my queue time is between 6-15 min per game..yay...). Not sure if its NA related or pacov is a poop related. I do tend to be grouped with NA people fairly often interestingly enough.
I am back from my trip and pretty rusty. I felt really awkward playing league last night. Its funny how a week off can really set you back mechanically. Anyways I should be around very frequently again.
Also WFX got beat in the promotional tournament so we will have two new teams in the NA LCS for the summer split (the best challenger team gets in automatically and TDK). Hai also stepped down from being C9's mid laner. IMO this should of happened much earlier during the spring split. Hai through a lot of blame on a wrist injury in a blerb he posted. It will be interesting if C9 will stay close to the top in NA with a roster swap after being together for so long.
patch is coming out this week.
Check this out if you haven't seen - riot art contest - folks designed a map - kind of sick

Glad to have you back man. Nice that you got to get back in time to catch a rare Nades/Sharpie sighting!
It will be interesting if C9 will stay close to the top in NA with a roster swap after being together for so long.
Hai was the shotcaller on that team right?
Yes, they will have extreme growing pains I feel because of this.
Yeah for sure. Their superior shotcalling/macro level/whatever helped set them apart. But it wasn't just Hai who made them trendsetters. Seemed like everyone on their team were innovative in their own way. Except for maybe Balls. If Cloud 9 was the Beetles then Balls was Ringo I guess?
Re: Rust
You seemed like you were playing as good as ever the other day. Just wait until you get on the wrong side of 30. Then everything goes to shit when you stop playing for... like two hours.
What really trips me out is how good Sharpie is after like... two years off. She was laning with me bot one game and was doing great. Gotta talk to her about rushing Ruby SS but as far as mechanics go, she's solid.
Samsung White legacy skins in the store on May 14

Ash rework live on pbe
http://euw.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/champions-skins/champion-update/champion-update-ashe-takes-aim-pbe
Looking interesting- passive now causes all abilities and aa's to slow - ashe does more damage to slowed enemies. bonus dmg increases with critical strike change.
Lots of changes - see article for details.
prob back on NA whenever the patch lands. got up to level 20 on my acct there. Running with a few NA folks.
well.. I ended up against a challenger 1 player tonight with my level 15 pals. His buddy was willing to chat with me and I figured it out, though. So, matchmaking on LAN will pretty solidly put you up against low level accts if you duo with a low level pal. For instance, if I was plat on LAN and duo'd with a brand new fella, well.. we'd have a longer queue time, but I would up against brand new folks. From what i looked at, there is pretty much zero effort to pull in someone else. Perhaps it would match us if there happened to be another challenger on. From this fellas history, any time he duo'd with this guy, he'd be in ROFLSTOMPS. I was up against challenger 1 - rank 36 in LAN...and handled him as a support. Kind of clear we couldn't win though. He's main acct is diamond 3 on NA to give you an idea of what challenger 1... rank 36 is like. So... I fought the number 36 person in lan today... woo...
There better not be. I'd be pretty pissed off if I queued up by myself in a Normal game the matchmaking system made me waste my time in a sub 30 game to 'balance' things out.
I imagine that not many Challenger players enjoy low level games, so I doubt they queue up with their pre-30 friends that often. When it does happen, it sounds like the system does the best it can to compensate.
From what I know about the matchmaking system, this is what I think is happening:
Pacov shows up in LAN and makes a new account. He starts stomping beginner players from Costa Rica. Great win percentage, huge KDAs, good fun.
Oh no! The smurf detector notices this. He's now registered as a smurf. The matchmaker don't know if he's Gold V or Challenger. Pre-30 games are a total crapshoot so it's really hard to tell. So when a level 30 Challenger enters a Pre-30 game, the system says "What the fuck? Well... This Pacov guy is pretty good. He might be Challenger too for all I know. Let's see what happens."
If you were curious, hopefully that clears up a little of the mystery.
If you were complaining, keep in mind that the actual beginners who are learning the game don't want to play with you. Riot doesn't want you to play with them either, so if you're ending up in games full of NA smurfs then everything is working as intended.
I was mostly curious and figured out (thanks to the challenger's buddy) why I ended up vs the number 36 guy in LAN. Also thought it might be interesting to know that 36 on LAN = diamond 3 on NA (guys main is on NA). Anyway, the matchmaking system that allowed that also put a diamond 2 against a brand new, level 1 account... which is just odd. I'd think the overall population is bigger than that in LAN.
Really, though, 'm mostly interested in figuring out how matchmaking is working and not looking to destroy level 1, new players... which happened like 1-2 games in total I think - which is good and exactly how the system should work in my mind. I don't want to play with or against roflstomp teams. I mostly like playing on LAN lately to spend some time outside of voice chat just fing about (and I oddly still really like leveling accounts... ocd or something)...
oh and I figured out an AWFUL way to go into "offline" mode so you appear invisible to folks on your pal list. The downside is it also kills lobby chat... which means you can't communicate in the lobby, but can still in game. It's just pretty much changing the text file including the chat name address and restarting the client. Not something I'm really interested in doing, but I figured I'd mention in case folks out there are like me and enjoy disappearing/ducking folks from time to time. There actually used to be a program did it perfectly, but riot seemed opposed.
so, kinda of a big change for morg if you haven't read about it (reddit found anyway). I think what riot has done is actually fix something that has been broken for some time. With morg's spellshield, previously you could block cc even if dmg was greater than that of the spell shields value. Eg my spell shield is worth say 20. If I fire a cc at that spell shield doing > 20 dmg, the spell shield pops. Previously, though, the cc would be stopped even if the spell shield was popped. NOW, cc will not be stopped if the shield pops.
This seems an appropriate change, but does impact the fairly large amount of flexiblity you had with morg previously. For instance, I could get away with my goofy GDM before - now, without added ap, it could make a bigger difference for shields. Additionally, it will likely become more important to level up that ability earlier which reduces kill potential on upgraded q's. It's also probably worth doing the math if you are fighting against a morgana so see how much damage is needed to pop those shields. For instance, how much dmg do you need for a thresh hook to go through the shield. If you can have that damage at level 2/3 due to runes, you can swing a lane... especially as folks will see the shield, think they are safe, and then get destroyed.
