Update 5/25/2017
Well, I started a thread back in Dec 2011 that’s seen a lot of activity (some 922,000 views over the course of a few years apparently...). That thread had a good deal of tips/strategies/discussions about League of Legends from new and old players alike. You can find the previous thread (now archived) here: https://forums.joeuser.com/413863. I think its time to start fresh with a new thread.
What’s this thread all about? For those that followed the previous thread, the type of content you see here will be fairly consistent to what you are used to. Please consider this a place to discuss LoL related content as you like. I'll do the same and treat the thread as a blog as well where I talk about what’s going on with me in LoL. Feel free to jump in and join the discussion if you like.
Quick background on meI played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011, I started getting heavily involved in League of Legends, and folks from the community were kind enough to help me figure things out. I play LoL most nights, stream, make videos and it’s my main gaming interest.

Thoughts?
When did you become Best Irelia On The Team? Bryff says hi. He's got a lot of experience with her and plays her with a high win % in Ranked SoloQ.
Your Liss is solid though. That's going to be a great option for the team at times IMO.
Edit: And in my opinion Vi > J4 now.
Don't agree. I don't feel like giving them Vi for free every game (or Liss or Nid). It doesn't make sense just because you have J4 much higher on your personal tier list with respect to Vi than most of the rest of the world.
hi
bryff's on the ranked team? let me know when he plays with us and he can do that top irel (not that I have any say in that ). I like his irel just fine btw... he just doesn't really play ranked w/ us and I don't consider him part of the conversation as such.
I don't think I'm saying anything all that surprising re: j4. prob best to just ban then both and suck it up if needed. my 2 cents. you're entitled to yours ofc.
heya mr swan!
anyone have a swan update? didn't get to play with him tonight sadly. just curious if he'll be on more, etc.
man decided to work on my sej tonight in team builder... did not go well. I was running some a meteos rune setup + masteries... and... I think my problem is that I'm not meteos.
Here's what he runs:
Now - if you can remove the whole pacov is kind of smeh at jungle and does not have meteos level skill cap, thoughts on why the rune setup/mastery setup is bad for her? Or is it acceptable and I'm just poo? Its a max cooldown setup more or less. You have 30% cdr with a blue at the start.... 20% cdr normally. This means you can keep your w up a bunch. BUT - then his build opts into what I would do on nunu - sightstone, etc. See this link for that info: http://www.probuilds.net/guide/NA/1743162721/390600
i was playing at school... since my internet at home up to this point has been on average about 3kbs
I am hoping to be on more... however, at school i have a time limit... the campus closes at 10pm central time... so i can play until a game would start around 9 or later... but i've just been missing you guys so much. i hope to be on more often. sorry you missed out pacov, but you we had 5 before you got online... hopefully soon though.
but a big laugh to the last time i played before tonight was like december 20th.
i can agree with that statement...
That said, i do agree with Vi > Jarvan.
sej-cov
What Trick2g does is actually rush CDR boots on Sej, so you can have two early ults (in combination with flat CDR blues). That was before when you could swap enchants though...
Sadly, CDR just isn't that useful level 1 when you only have one ability. i generally prefer CDR/lvl, espiecially on janglers... But what is my opinion.
Bryff is still on the roster and he still plays League. If you guys are super desperate to have an Irelia player I'd say it would be worthwhile to reach out and see if he wants to get some games in.
bryff seems to be fairly busy with school right now so I wouldn't count to much on seeing him around.
Sejauni:
Id consult with Boaz on this one since he has like a million sejauni games. Also Diamond played Sejauni yesturday for Gambit and did fairly well on her. Check out his build (actually gets sight stone).
Vi/j4:
J4 is still J4 but he is more susceptable to jungle invades (still fairly easy to escape invades with combo). I think Vi is slightly safe pick but they are about equal in strength and j4 gets a boost from being on a team with rumble/gnar or a team that needs disengage (ult->flash out->I just made a big wall).
glad to hear it, swan.
I'm curious as to how much of a hit j4 actually took on the last nerf (also... these patch change nerfs seem really... not thought out and half assed). My perception is still tier 1 top pick - it takes a bit for the hive mind to adapt. I mean, it sounds pretty strong w/ regard to his jungle clears and even with the armor, he felt squishy early/mid if you miss an engage... but beyond that, the utility in his kit and ease of use still makes me think he's top tier/must pick ban. Could be vi is stronger as a result though (and in some tiers - gold I think), she has a higher win rate than j4 last 2 days (diff of .4% or so - going on memory as I can't view that here).
I don't think I'll be getting many tips from boaz re: sej. I know he has a million games w/ her though - I just don't think he does much w/ regard to crafting, alt rune/mastery builds, etc. He also only likes playing ap sej and this build is decidedly not that.
cow - do you have any link to the build, etc for diamond's game? I can prob find the vod, but runes/masteries prob not.
yah - catching mr bryff is hit and miss. I've caught him a few times somewhat recently, but its few and far between.
hedgie - trick2g though. I love trying his stuff out from time to time, but its usually just some goofy crap. If he's building the tanky jungle item that gives tenacity, then the cdr boots make ok sense. I'm not sure how that pans out, what his whole build is, etc. That said, my stint working on sej is probably not going to last super long, but I'm trying to polish up my jungle game a bit and am super rusty/bad.
the utility in his kit and ease of use still makes me think he's top tier/must pick ban.
Wouldn't Vi's be even easier though?
Ult their front line then EQ to back line? EQ through front line then Ult to isolate back line? Ult front line then EQ back to safety of team while your guys poke the fish in a barrel? Ult to peel for your squishies? Ult to trap their squishies? Lots of decisions that have to be made very quickly. Also, using your ult with terrain, best placement and positioning so you can get a second EQ on the first flag, etc etc. Compared to a point and click single target ult on Vi? I'm thinking that J4 has the higher skill ceiling.
@hedgie - I don't think so. There's minimal wind up time for j4's combo for ganks/pick offs and its very difficult to miss the mechanical aspect (flag > grab flag = cake - flag >grab flag and cc someone = lower odds, but still pretty easy to do). Vi's dash requires a charge. Also the positional aspect of things - j4 ults, you take dmg immediately. vi ults and depending on the setup, an adc or mid can reposition vi with flash + dash, etc. There's no such mechanic with j4. Vi's ult will cc unless zhyon'd (i think) and superior for that, but also only single target.
so, more skill required on vi for proper use of her q (imo ofc) - wind up time + aiming properly. j4- be in range, combo and you pretty much know you are going to land your cc (hard + slow). It's just really easy with j4.
edit - right on mr thunder
Vi knocks up people en-route to her "R" target. It's just as "multitarget" as a J4's EQ combo. (in fact, a 4-man CC from a Vi ult in a chokepoint was one of the reasons we lost one of our ranked games).
Anyway, i think we both agree that Gnar + Jarven is a lot better than Gnar + Vi. i think that Vi has some very strong synergy with Assassins in the midlane (particularly in the assassins versus assassin matchup, since J4 might have a hard time hitting EQ against the more slippery assassins). At the moment, we haven't been playing many assassins midlane. If we starting doing so, that's a strong reason to play Vi.

On J4:
J4 has already seen a fairly significant winrate drop this patch (at least a few percent). Also, listen to people like SaintVicious on him:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9OWmvsdZhM
He describes him as "nerfed into the ground" and "devastated" and says that "I don't even know if anybody is going to play him any more". Now that might be going a little far IMO, but the point is that considering J4 a must ban in all cases is a bit out of line I would think.
ok so check out carry.gg. Some interesting info - only works on in game folks:
here's an example
Now, the noob stat stuff can be crap as its only counting the number of games played in ranked as champ. The hot/cold streak, on the other hand.. VERY useful. Also nice to see veteran info. The cold streak means folks that are more likely to tilt if their lane goes poop. The bad cs'er tag means this guy is trash at farming - which means he sucks mechanically or consistently goes for trades at the cost of cs. Either way, useful intel. I'll prob check this out when I do ranked next. Interesting at any rate.
Had 1 nice ranked game tonight with a 21,0 kda on support morg. We were up against a poo team, but it was a nice moral boost anyway
Cow is one of the best players I know but one of his main downfalls in my opinion is that he tilts himself in champ select. Sucks that there is another website that will help him do that to himself.
As far as the CS thing goes, seems like there are lots of variables that can skew it pretty hard depending on such as who you play with. I play most of my Irelias games with my Diamond friends so I'm a bad Cser as Irelia. No wait, I play most of my Irelia games with my Bronze friends so I'm a godlike CSer with Irelia?
Also, if someone's playing a Vayne for instance who should always be a little behind in CS if they're going against an evenly skilled lane, will it label them as a Bad CSer?
Enjoy the intel but I think I'm personally better off going into the game without it.
I pretty much never lolking people any more during champ select or loading screen unless they want mid lane so I can see if its worth giving it to them or if I should take it incase they are one of those people that decided to main mid lane after seeing bjergsen play mid zilean on stream (yeah that happened).
The only thing I get tilty about at champ select now is if people pick champions into there counter picks. Its like willingly jumping off a bridge into a spike pit. You can pretty much assume that that particular lane is already lost (especially in solo queue). First pick vaynes are also a sore spot for me unless the dude is a vayne main then whatever. Odd ball jungle picks are annoying as well especially when there is a vi/j4/lee/reksai/nidalee up yet but instead we get fiora.
Games last night:
Leaving Liss up for me to first pick worked really well. I don't think it was the only reason we won those games but it definitely helped. Everyone played pretty well in those games. Dan's Orianna was very on point in the last game. It seems like both me and Dan have been doing well on Ori and we might want to run her more often.
I think the malphite/mao/hec game we should of won. Karl and Hunny were very fed and like Karl said if we just took a fight on our terms (initiating on jinx) we would of probably won the game. I was a naughty boy and went in on almost every pacov snare despite who it was. I think the worst case was when I started a fight after Pacov snared there super tanky leona around the dragon pit. We lost atleast 4 members I think and dragon from me getting jumping in on a very undesirable target. I needed to have better self control. If we ever run a comp like that we will just have to wait for flash + initiation on the carry or play for really easy picks.
Fun games anyway to bad we didn't go 3-1 : /
Since you're a mid main I can understand using it to figure out whether you should give away your pick.
Jungle... this fucking jungle nowadays. Yeah, there is a limit to how much you can outplay the PvE so hoping that your teammate picks one of the few junglers that doesn't get demolished during their first clear is reasonable.
But counter picks? Meh. Maybe your ally is needlessly putting themselves at a disadvantage. Maybe they are going to carry the game and make you look really dumb for saying they made a mistake playing their main. Either way what good does tilting yourself and your ally in champ select do?
some other jungle changes on pbe
Crimson Raptor
Murk Wolf
Raptor
someone posted this on reddit and its actually a good tip. I tried it once and was successful on the 1st try. Good for all top laners to practice and learn. I recommend saving the pic below and either trying at the beginning of a game as a top laner (eg run up and ward immediately) or testing in a custom. I tried it out as a top laner and it was easy.
The instructions seem a bit hard to read (for me). I'll spell it out better. Right click on the red dot. Press space. Cast your ward on the right white spot. Profit. I think this is worth learning as it doesn't seem like something riot will adjust
That raptor damage was pretty epic...
I've not had the problem with sub-optimal junglers not being able to clear well, but I'm running 1/12/17 masteries and vamp quints on my junglers. You still can't sustain early like you could before, but you can get through red in good shape with a gromp start. It's not the best for optimizing damage late game, but the three biscuit start is good for gromp/blue/red with 60% plus health in good time with Rammus. The summoner cd cooldown, trinket range and speed help with ganks and clear speeds, and the combined vamprism and durability is enough to sustain with the good junglers without needing a vamp item. You still have to back with most of them, but you can usually make someone else back too. On a successful gank with Rammus I usually get the first jungle upgrade and tier 2 boots off my first back.
