Update 5/25/2017
Well, I started a thread back in Dec 2011 that’s seen a lot of activity (some 922,000 views over the course of a few years apparently...). That thread had a good deal of tips/strategies/discussions about League of Legends from new and old players alike. You can find the previous thread (now archived) here: https://forums.joeuser.com/413863. I think its time to start fresh with a new thread.
What’s this thread all about? For those that followed the previous thread, the type of content you see here will be fairly consistent to what you are used to. Please consider this a place to discuss LoL related content as you like. I'll do the same and treat the thread as a blog as well where I talk about what’s going on with me in LoL. Feel free to jump in and join the discussion if you like.
Quick background on meI played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011, I started getting heavily involved in League of Legends, and folks from the community were kind enough to help me figure things out. I play LoL most nights, stream, make videos and it’s my main gaming interest.

Just saw this re: the upcoming nemesis mode (new featured gameplay mode (think urf) where you pick your enemy teams champs)- "we also have a special reward icon planned for players who don't leave or dodge any games of Nemesis Draft throughout the mode's run. " - L4T3NCY
I am considering streaming. Would you guys be interested in watching? currently I would have to buy a second monitor and a new desk to accomodate said monitor. If I do invest I wouldn't mind some help from you Pacov in showing me the ropes as I find your stream to be pretty good quality in terms of layout, picture quality, no nonsense with showing random browsing online (I assume you have a monitor dedicated to other activities than the game you are playing) etc.... Just a vague idea not sure how serious I am about it yet.
I don't mind helping you out, but I really don't think its super worth the time. You actually lose quite a bit of time getting a setup that you like, configuring overlays, etc. You can always just do something basic - you could probably get something setup and configured that would work over about 4 hours - but if you are anything like me, you'll probably want to sink a TON of time getting a nice setup with good looking overlays, etc. I've probably dumped maybe 50 hours into that sort of thing over the last couple of years (not terrible, but its sunk time).
The main question you've got to ask yourself is why do you want to stream? If its just to try something out for fun, then sure. A little disposable income and some time and you are good to go. Then you've got to move along to who would watch you and why. As it stands, I probably wouldn't watch you stream, but I'm sure some of our pals would - probably the same pals that watch me stream from time to time as well. For me personally, I enjoy 2 things on stream. High level play with commentary or just entertaining players. Everything else I could give a rip about. And I've never really heard you provide a monolog and that's what you'd need to do. I don't think just streaming games while you play with pals is the best format either. I know some of our pals would tune in for that sort of thing, but I can't think of many streamers that do that on the regular.
I can give you a rough formula that I think will work for most of our pals to give you a head start and get some pals watching, though. Get something super basic setup soon to be able to stream. If you want my help, I'll give it, but only after you try setting things up yourself (I'd rather not be the idiots guide for setting things up and instead just help when you have questions). Then, stream a few basic games here and there. Make sure things are coming through clear, sound levels are good/not annoying, etc. Next, start working a little on monolog. Play a game WITHOUT any voice chat, etc. Start talking - give thoughts about the matchup, comment on why you do this or that. Try to get in the habit of being talkative (your pals will find you annoying if you do this on voice chat later eh ). Being talkative is what makes watching you more entertaining than just spectating a game you are in so I can see the pov of everyone. So... you know... talk.
Then, the final bit that you can do right away, advertise here that you are going to start streaming your ranked placement series and say a specific time. That's a really good place to start as our pals seem to like watching ranked play when I stream anyway.
But to circle back to my initial thought - its worth figuring out why you want to stream in the 1st place. Odds are you aren't going to become the next big thing - so, even if you only have a handful of viewers, why? Sure the idea of thousand of people being into you is cool, but do you still care if its just a few folks. If so, then have fun with it. If you are entertaining or really informative, I'd watch from time to time.
I have people ask me here and there why I'm not streaming as much and the reason is I don't think I'm doing anything all that super interesting currently. If you stream, it might as well be something that is interesting to others, eh.
The new ranked season is starting again so that is the reason I was thinking about doing it. Also a new desk, chair and monitor have been on my list of things for probably 3 years now, just an excuse to purchase them.
bah - no excuse needed. Nice to treat yourself now and then. Do it to it.
Anyone know the 1st date for our fantasy stuff? Just want to make sure I'm keyed into it (can't check that site at work)
Thursday the first EU LCS games will be played and you will see points start to accumulate on your players. The first week will conclude with the last NA LCS game on Sunday.
1. I'd love to watch me some Cow streaming. Pretty sure you could enjoy some popularity if you worked at it, if you're willing to teach the game a little bit and talk about why you're doing this etc. Streamers seem to get viewers by either: trolling Kaceytron style, boobs, being really really really good, being funny/having a good personality. There aren't that many out there who are willing or able to teach the game while they play, so being a 'Diamond Nightblue' is a neglected market IMO.
2. Getting kinda pumped for Ranked. Going to try and prioritize my roles this season instead of being 'that filler guy' and see how it goes. I want to still be prepared to play all roles decently but typing Supp->ADC->Top->Jungle->Mid in champ select is the plan right now. Want to have a wide variety of bot lane champs to balance out what the team comp needs but just have one or two A-/B+ champs that are hard to counter in the other roles. Also going to just solo it unless Karl or Hedgie want to get some games in, since it feels like they have their game management knowledge dialed which is where I feel weakest and our roles sync well. Hooking up with randoms who I had good games with didn't have great results.
Anyone else got some plans to get to the next level? Pacov, still waiting for that Road To Diamond Vlog or post.
3. Stoked on my Riot gift: The Mighty Jax! You guys?
I have was gifted void terror fizz from riot. Maybe they are telling me to learn assassins although its totally not my play style.
Thanks for the words of encouragement for streaming. I was looking at desks yesturday and didn't really see anything I liked on craigslist. Monitor wise I would probably just get another copy of the ACER I have since its been good to me. Funds are a little tight with the Hawaii trip, Christmas credit card bills and student loans starting to hit. Maybe next pay check I could seriously start thinking about it.
Man - I'd flat out lie and adjust that list so supp isn't the 1st thing listed. If I'm not feeling confident for w/e reason, that's when I'd offer up support directly (as that's kind of my fall back role that I can play well if I'm not dicking about). If I see someone list things the way you did, I'm going to try to put that guy in support - which might be fine, but not my preference anyway.
We should all maybe try to shoot for getting in a couple of ranked games a night. I don't think many of us have the time to blitz through provisionals. From what I've been reading, the weighting is MUCH nicer. Plat V goes 9/1 moves to plat III. Diamond V goes 4/6 goes to Plat I. Seems like the negative impact has been lessened - ESPECIALLY if you factor in that the diamond V example would have been lowered to Plat I or so with the soft reset. So, even if things go poorly, it doesn't sound like you'll have to grind up from silver or anything.
I'm going to try to get lissandra whenever possible and ride that train - hoping she isn't banned and I get pick order - pretty sure I can carry very well with her.
heh... I honestly don't even recollect. If I get fired up/inspired, I'll make a vid or something.
el tigre braum has been unleashed.
And riot's primetime show is going live tonight at 8pm est.
That primetime show should be pretty awkward. I am definitely going to try to catch that tonight.

NOBODY TELL HUNNY ABOUT PIGLET, IT WILL BE OUR LITTLE SECRET.
I am already aware of Kori.
very glad I didn't jump into ranked right away like I was thinking of doing tonight. Played several games and had exactly 2 decent games and the rest just smeh with me being a derp. Gotta say I love blitz as a support now. Easily my fav support atm.
I got that braum skin and then remembered why I don't like braum. Cool skin, but its either folks don't respond as well as they should to the passive procs and I end up being a goon and have my shield pointing the wrong way. Like with leona, its crystal clear, we are going in on a hard engage if I land my combo. With braum, I need my adc to work with me a little more. I think there' quite a bit of potential there, but you'd prob need a really good adc and alot of work with the combo to maximize it.
Also, fug kalista. Riots doing 2 really dumb things - 1 buffing her already... 2 apparently the zz portal is getting buffed. That's kind of nuts.
Well I ended the night going 4-4. Not what I wanted but really dumb teammates in my brand game, a fiddle that got way out of control in another. Renekton didn't go so well either. I couldn't kill jayce in lane so we both just farmed and he had a bigger impact in team fights. The annie on the other team that was playing mid completely shut down the akali on my team. Had to win when annie's get really big. Hopefully I can 2-0 the rest of the games.
Hard*
The hype is that folks going 9/1 and folks going 1/9 aren't seeing huge swings in their placement. Odds are if you blow the next 2 games you still might be diamond V.
zz portal example of cheese team doing cheese things.
vod of PTL episode 1
Dyrus went 3-7 and got placed in Plat I. I am expecting to see Gold I or Plat V is my guess.
lol That list is my way of requesting to play Support if that wasn't clear. I like the role and know how to play more than one Support champ so I don't mind playing it quite often.
I'm sure I'll get quite a few games as other roles though, since Support seems to be much more popular nowadays and there will be the occasional "We are duo give us bot!" players if I stick to just trying to climb solo.
ah righto
FYI re: fantasy LCS.. can't check the site from work
Attention Fantasy LCS: players out of week 1!
Other thoughts - I kind of wish that Riot didn't allow duo queuing in ranked. It always feels like it skews things. I think I'd prefer it it only be solo queue to take out unnecessary variables. As a preface (as this will sound negative), I'm sure I'll duo queue here and there ofc - but think about this - are you more or less impressed with someone climbing up the ranks as a solo queue guy or someone that duos? Does anyone really like it when they find out they have a duo queue that must play bot together? Folks whose best 2 roles are adc/support do not like that so much anyway, so for me in particular its more of a nuisance. Anyway, I really don't feel like it adds anything other than for the ability to play with a pal at the cost of matchmaking (eg remove duo queues - now I'm grouped with folks of very similar mmrs, probably in similar tiers, etc - NOT Me and my buddy that gold V and I'm plat V are together and hopefully matchmaking was about to find another gold V/plat V duo to put us up against... and also hopefully those gold V's can hold their own against stronger players).
Look at that example another way - duo queues can essentially allow some weak player into a group of better players. As the weak player probably doesn't belong there (or he'd already have that rank), he's up against opponents that he can't run with... and as such, has to be carried. Which, of course, is a disadvantage. Ideally, the other team will be at similar disadvantage, but I can tell you that is generally not the case as finding spot on equally matched duo queues rarely happens (ex team 1 has gold V/plat V duo, team 2 has the same). Now its a question of which lower rated player is more of a liability. Granted, this isn't always the case, but my argument is that its adding an unneeded level of complexity and skewing what would be more even games. Reiterated. 5 plat V's vs 5 plat V's is better than 4 plat V + 1 Gold V vs 4 plat V + 1 Gold V. The duo queue example lets people that don't belong (eg HAVE NOT EARNED) their place in a tier play there - often to the detriment of 1 team... as it certainly sounds more fair to have 5 equals or near equals fight it out.
Last - I'll still duo queue from time to time. Not against doing it for fun - I just think its an unnecessary concept.
I don't think I have won a game in ranked in recent memory when two people exclaimed that they had to duo bot. Most of the time when people duo bot in my experience it ends up being some obscure adc pick like kalista or a bizzare support and they lose horribly. I think jungler + whatever is the better duo set up because you can coordinate ganks really really well. Like if me and Karl duo'd Karl could just get me fed every game and it would be ez pz LP.
