Update 5/25/2017
Well, I started a thread back in Dec 2011 that’s seen a lot of activity (some 922,000 views over the course of a few years apparently...). That thread had a good deal of tips/strategies/discussions about League of Legends from new and old players alike. You can find the previous thread (now archived) here: https://forums.joeuser.com/413863. I think its time to start fresh with a new thread.
What’s this thread all about? For those that followed the previous thread, the type of content you see here will be fairly consistent to what you are used to. Please consider this a place to discuss LoL related content as you like. I'll do the same and treat the thread as a blog as well where I talk about what’s going on with me in LoL. Feel free to jump in and join the discussion if you like.
Quick background on meI played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011, I started getting heavily involved in League of Legends, and folks from the community were kind enough to help me figure things out. I play LoL most nights, stream, make videos and it’s my main gaming interest.

RIP PDT again. Haven't played a game with him in a bit. Fired one up w/ him last night. He(mid) and our top lane had a bad game and PDT tilted off the planet. Sample of a time I didn't gank for him. Anyway, unfriended by the PDT, I skip away. - http://plays.tv/r/eyJ0eXBlIjoiZW1haWwiLCJkYXRhIjoiZW1haWxfdG9fd2Vic2l0ZSIsInVpZCI6IjkzZThjZmE3M2RkNWZhMWE5MGNmMzBlNDk0ZmIyNmEyIiwibXNnX3R5cGUiOiIiLCJ1dG1fc291cmNlIjoiZW1haWxfdmlkZW9fdXBsb2FkZWQiLCJ1dG1fbWVkaXVtIjoiZW1haWwiLCJ1dG1fY2FtcGFpZ24iOiJwcm9kdWN0ZW1haWxzdjEiLCJ1dG1fYiI6IjM3Mzc3IiwiZXhwZXJpbWVudF9pZCI6IkQiLCJsaW5rX2lkIjoidmlkZW8tdGh1bWIiLCJ0aW1lc3RhbXAiOiIwLjQ5MDc1MjAwIDE0NTI2NTkxODAiLCJyYW5kIjoxNDEzOTIzNTQ2fQ%3D%3D/video/5695d14c395e6519f7
Anyway, I'm starting to feel back at home in the jungle again. Loving playing shy. Exhaust/challenging smite are pretty freaking awesome to have on a jungler in this meta. Those fed guys that could kite ya? No. Late game vayne with full build even considered clearing a wave alone, no. Dead. Even that pisser kindred. You have to alter your play style to accommodate the lack of flash, but its really not that big a deal in my experience so far anyway.
The downside is that you generally shouldn't initiate, so its best if you have someone on the team able to do that. I felt really good about how I was handling objective control and counter jungling. Last game I had a pink every single time I was going for any objective and was tossing them out like candy. I tracked the jungler extremely well and felt like i had a pretty good handle on things. Anyway, when new champ select goes live I feel very comfortable support/jungle now - which is great as I've been trying really hard to settle into a second role for ranked.
so did they completely delay the patch then?
Oo - shen champion update news - http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/page/champion-update-shen
They need to just go ahead and change the name to League of Percent Health Damage and get it over with...
I quit playing Shen because his taunt is stupid... I dashed through champions without taunting them more often than not after his taunt nerf, and even after they bumped the radius back up a little, it's still absurdly unfriendly in how it looks versus how it performs. It's not as if a multi-target taunt was ever a problem, it's only a 1.5 second affair and there is much better CC available out there.
Jan 20th announced as the start date for the new ranked season
Poor Karl...
@Pacov
Sorry, didn't get your first message. Yeah, a Leagueconnect guy. Support main, old like me.
Lol that meme so good.
IS THAT A FIRST PICK SUPPORT POPPY BY FNATIC? WHY WOULD YOU PLAY ANYTHING ELSE?
Playing anything else makes you a pansy. That's science and that's a fact.
Tried out the new champ select this morning and I love it. Very crisp, well designed. I love having a ban choice as one of the last picks but I'm not sure that it makes it feel good being one of the first two players to pick. First picks get countered and aren't able to choose a ban? That don't seem right. But hopefully Riot will move the ban number up to 4-5 where it should be anyway. It'll feel better if everyone get's one ban and there are 473 champions now so it makes sense to have more bans.
Teambuilder is gone but Blind Pick is still there for those who love playing OP champions and practicing for Ranked in triple mirror match games. New Champion Select has already been put in for Ranked and Normals. I assume we're gonna just have our Normal MMR from what it was before from Normal Draft.
That's your local news for the day and now back to Karl for the weather...
Karl: "It's raining Poppy's bitch!"
poppy's and trundles anyway
I'm a fan of more bans as well and think we have enough depth to be able to do that. Re: your thoughts on first pick though, hmm... I think fp can be countered no matter what, right? So, being able to ban out someone as FP is nice and all, but I don't think its that big a deal. It just makes you a feel a little helpless as you at least had control of 3 bans previously. Now you are at the mercy of folks that would never consider banning mundo or what have you.
Anyway, got swamped with work stuff yesterday so I didn't get to play. Looking forward to trying out champ select tonight.
New champselect feels like it takes 10 minutes... And then when some one drops its really cancer.
Heh, 10 minutes...
I actually beat ten minutes. Two drops after people failed to lock in, 9 and a half minutes on the counter when my third match loaded.
Assuming that timing will get better as folks get used to it
kids be yelling on reddit about top players streaming and whining about jacked up matchmaking.
lyte says: "Re: High level Ranked, we're aware of an issue in matchmaker that is creating some lopsided matches at Diamond+ levels."
So, sounds like that will be fixed.
A few reports of pretty mismatched ranked games happening. 1 was all silvers vs a gold/plat team. Might be something wrong.

oh and rumor mill - voice chat being added to the client - announce this month.

Not a huge fan of the new queue. Getting first or second pick is literally the worst slot. Not to mention this game mode should've replaced draft pick instead of teambuilder. The whole point of teambuilder was to play a role you wanted without the hassle of a ban/pick phase. Getting first pick as top or mid and you may as well accept you are going to be counterpicked with 0 way to stop it, considering you don't get a single ban anymore, gl playing counterable champs unless you manage to convince your teammates to use their bans for your sake.
I love the new animations for the game mode, but for me all they did was take out the features that made teambuilder my main queue and bring in the good stuff from draft, but manage to make it backwards...
On another note, I am glad they decided to take the buff route instead of the nerf route for the capstones. I have heard good things about stormraider's since the buffs.
I also finally got a new mouse, my old one was a wireless $20~ dollar logitech from walmart, while the new one is an actual gaming mouse. The dpi change and cord are going to take some getting used to though.
Yeah, it's pretty lame that they didn't take this opportunity to reverse their sillyness and give five bans each team. I was kinda shaking my head at first as to why the first two picks who would most need to protect against counter picks don't get a ban.
But then I started looking at the dopeness instead of the whackness. Sometimes it will be really good because you're playing a role where there's not ban worthy but super popular picks that you're competing against the other team to get.
As far as Teambuilder goes Brad, Blind Pick should be good for you. It's kinda going to be a trade off but I think it will be worth it for you?
You'll probably get the role you want and probably get the champion you want but it's not guaranteed. But you're less likely to be put in some crazy mirror mismatch shitty game that was decided when the matchmaking system said "Oh, fuck it. I was trying to find your team a Platinum player but the queues been going for 15 minutes. Here's a Bronze Teemo Jungler. Have fun and thanks for playing Teambuilder."
...
I've been waiting for Pacov's PDT voice pack to go viral but it hasn't so far. My only explanation is he wasn't able to put in the best line that was ever said in voice chat with us:
"You cannot defeat the Zengod that is some bullshit."
In the hundreds of games I played teambuilder, at least I never got matched up against an enemy master 1 tier player. Dynamic queue made sure to remedy that though, and it hasn't even been a day since it came out.
I hate blind pick more than draft, so instead of moving to a different queue type I am probably just going to stop playing as much, I have other things I should do anyway, like studying.
SOB ASDJLKASDLJKASJKLDASJLKDLK
into my 3rd load screen now to hopefully start a asdkljaskldasjlds game. Fuggers dodge at the LAST moment as well each time... after taking close to max time to lock in champs.
queue time currently at 11min.
4th queue 13 min
16 min and its game time boys. #disableteambuilderfaster

Dynamic queue matchmaking is screwed up right now. Hopefully they'll fix it soon.
Blind Pick isn't going to be around in it's current form. They're going to have a version of New Champion Select that doesn't have bans and the games should get started pretty quickly since roles won't be decided by who instalocks first. No mirror matches too! Should be the perfect setup for someone who wants to get a game in quick and doesn't want to have his desired champion banned.
LOL
I totally did that first game I queued up for. Was with cool people who were all stoked on our teamcomp and I got my primary choice and the champion I wanted to play. Then I'm like "Wonder what this little up arrow does..."
Apparently it was a dodge button.
Edit: Dopey me. It's the skin picking button and someone dodged the moment I pressed it apparently. I'm dumb.
So, apparently we are also getting a brand new queue - true solo queue. No duos, no dynamic queue stuff, just 1 guy queues up. I'm assuming it will be using the new champ select. Anyway, I think that's great and I'm curious how that will impact the dynamic queue stuff. If you are alone, wouldn't you generally prefer to play the true solo queue instead of the dynamic queue? I tend to think that's what I'd do anyway. Wondering if that will slam queue time for dynamic ranked. Anyway, that is due to come out 2 weeks or so after the ranked season starts - so approx 3 weeks.
I definitely would, most duo's either suck horribly, or one of them is a fucking smurf power leveling their buddy.
I think Riot is betting on WAY more people playing Ranked because of the changes.
There will be Solo Ranked where you have your own LP that doesn't get affected by playing Dynamic Ranked with friends. So casual groups like ours will probably play Dynamic Ranked instead of Normal Draft. That's assuming the group doesn't have one of those friends in the mix that likes to troll his own team. My IRL buddies might even come back to the game now that all three of us can play Dynamic Ranked together and get the roles we want. That sort of influx should increase the Ranked population considerably.
And people like you will spend more time playing Solo Ranked because you won't have to deal with the Duo's that you hate so much. You're not the only one that hates Duo's so that should help the Solo Ranked population too.
If any Queue is going to become a ghost town, I'd think it would be Normal Draft.
