The ship designer is out now in the the alpha 2.0 patch, so when have a that ship designed feel free to post it here and so others can see what kind of cool things you can build with it.
My Lord, what you all have done with the ship designer is amazing.
Quoting Gauntlet03, reply 944Hey guys!Well I continue to work on a new space squid/organic ship set.Its surprisingly relaxing, because you can be a lot less precise with the parts when you know your going to be scaling and animating pretty much ALL of them lol.This time we have the Fighter Swarm (small hull) a Cargo Hull and a Nautilus inspired Medium Hull. When I do a large and huge, I definitely plan on having lots of little fighters hanging on their undersides, ready to launch.Feedback always welcome.
These are the most awesome ships I have seen so far. The detailed animation actually makes them truly come alive. Good work!
5.2 allowed me to get my custom race and custom ships together. Now meet a true Red Demon of the Alterans.
Ok, tried to take a swing at making a mobile suit. Kinda a Zaku II HM type.
This is just a first attempt so it isn't the greatest.
Sieg Zeon!!!!
I was wondering when someone would do a space battlesuit race or something. Personally I'm thinking of having a transport that is clearly carrying battlesuits ready for orbital insertion.
What you've done is really cool! Looking forward to more as you get a handle on your ideas! Oscillate the legs!?
@Hamilmac
@Allanmadragoran
@Boli_Delish
THANK YOU for the positive comments! If you ever have constructive feedback, share, like whether the animations are too fast or something. Furthermore, I'll definitely be releasing my designs in packages once the game is released, and hopefully modding won't be necessary to get the AI to use my ship sets! If it is, well I'll make that happen too, but it would be a big let down.
The first time I got to see a space mobile suit was with StarFox 64. Here's the 3DS version.
Yours looks very nice, but could you give it a shield?
Made a command version of my mobile suits. Features a larger shield with built in guns, larger main weapon, leg mounted missile launchers and a small shield for the left arm. Also inverted the colors to make it stand out and of course no Zeon command mobile suit is not complete without a command antenna mounted on the head. I just hope when the finished game comes out we can cycle through all the colors and textures while designing our ships.
Sieg Zeon!!!
I'm getting the hang of making these look better. I was able to do a lot more detail with the head and actually make decent looking fingers for the hand. Also switched up from tiny class to small. It's a mix of Zaku/Gouf/Gelgoog designs. (just noticed I didn't invert the colors on the other shoulder, whoops)
I hereby formally request Voltron: Defender of the Universe!
I`ll forward this to Omnibus at steam!
Nasty!
EDIT I don`t know ??/ What do you think ???
OK This is what Omnibus did !here his page at Steam!

My latest ship - the Valhalla Class Missile Cruiser
Ok I have to know...how doyou guys do these things? I mean that is built from the in game components? I mean can any picture I have...can it basically be put into the game then?

HOLY CRAP! Thanks and well done, Omnibus!
A lot of us start with a picture, schematic drawings, and even drawing out sketches. This base rule with doing this is it to look for shapes with ship parts that look like or closely resemble ship parts on your reference picture, drawing or schematic. Every ship is built from ship parts in the game with the idea to utilize ship parts from every race in the game. Ship designing in GC3 is very much an evolution process as you will go though many different variations to get your design to look the way you want it to. It wont always happen the first time so you keep working with it.
Anyone else want to add their advice toward good ship designing?

Fleet looking good MrStarTrek Man!!....................
Very Very nice Rand...and thanks for explaining on them. I was wondering if your designs can be used or designated as "prototypes" when we find those special elements in game to make them so? If so, which ones or will that be up to us to decide?
Advice for ship designing...
Well firstly, I always intend to design ships as part of a set, so I try to make sure there are common elements found in every design throughout the set usually.
1) I always start by designing the Medium class ship, this is the workhorse of many navies and so it comes up a lot in games, this will then guide me for the Large, Huge, classes.
2) Once I've designed the Medium, I'll take note of what engine designs I used, as well as any weapon platforms, command modules, etc. and make those into custom components for reuse often.
3) The other thing I do, is I try to establish a guiding style before I continue, this usually comes down to: Organic, Classic, Retro, and then Vertical or Horizontal.
Ultimately, I don't often try to replicate ships from other source materials so I'm usually just playing with parts and trying to make something that looks sensible. I'll also be careful with colors and parts, some parts just look mismatched together no matter what, and that just doesn't get allowed. I'm not saying I don't have inspirations from other sources, but I'm looking to be original.
Usually the Medium, Cargo, and Tiny (Fighter) hulls take me 2 hours each, and then subsequent ships might only be a hour, but of course, sometimes you just have problems and it takes longer, I always construct all designs multiple times to see them in game, and I try extremely hard to avoid any clipping whatsoever. Variant classes with modifications are also usually only a hour or so. To date, I've played 290 hours of the game. I'd say 200 of those are ship designing, probably about 50 is testing and learning and 150 is straight design. I think I've produced about 100 designs to date.
You can "specialize" my ship designs anyway you like. This is why I always provide an unarmed hull only for all my designs. If you want to add onto them or save them as templates you can do that also. How you chose to represent them in your own game is very much your personal choice.
LOL I just noticed you changed your name haha...
So if i want the defiant to be a huge ship I can change that then? I thought you had already defined the ships at certain levels already, thus they were locked in.
This ship needs some work, but I still like it. I'm mostly posting it to share my frustration how it looks in combat and in the galaxy view. Its a waste now. <cry>
And now the misery:
It fights sideways too!
No, you would have to build a new ship in huge scale. The Defiant class is in small scale keeping in mind the it's size compared to other classes. All my Star Trek designs are scaled by ship size comparison.
For example:

http://www.phan.org/sto/pics/ShipChart.jpg
http://memberfiles.freewebs.com/67/27/45742767/photos/Charts/SHIPS1.JPG
Looking at each size chart you have to determine best ship scale in game that best represents each class ship. Naturally I would want the Galaxy class in Huge scale. But as you also look at the other ships, some not as big or as wide as the Galaxy yet still in a large scale can be done in either large or huge scale. The Sovereign Class is also Huge scale but will look thinner and longer in comparison to the Galaxy Class because of the way I scaled and offset ships parts. Yet both ships are the same overall scale.
Hope that makes sense.
Its all good...im not going to mess around with it much, since there are so many uber awesome people like yourself who can do this. Im wondering if in the future if I will be able to have the ships become available as I progress doing the complete line of the Hull research...that way(since ive told you before how I play very slow research games) I can have each tech reveal a new hull(s).
A Terran shuttle pilot is showing off her moves.
Tell me, what is wrong with this picture?
Should this be considered a bug?
So far I have been able to fabricate these baby's, going to make larger versions once I research the hull sizes!
Colony ship!,
My interceptor,
And my when all else fails small gunship.
