The ship designer is out now in the the alpha 2.0 patch, so when have a that ship designed feel free to post it here and so others can see what kind of cool things you can build with it.
I missed the mark with that one, the post was supposed to come out funny.
Nah, the on board computer would compensate adding vectored thrust for pitch and yew.
Human pilot: "Hal, Why are you flying in circles?" Navigation Computer: "Well. you tell me Human, you designed me."
the problem with constructors is they don't carry but one thing at a time, too bad this can't be a real solution in the game.
Here is my first attempt at recreating a ship from an outside source, constructive criticism welcome. I also included a detail of the turret I designed for it.
That is a nice replica. But the colors Good job on it.
that is what the falcon should look like, GC2 never could produce a outstanding falcon. gotta love that ship designer!!!!!!!!!!!
Great Falcon! I am loving all the gun turrets also
Here is my latest Star Trek custom ship design. I found a better design for the warp nacelles. I just may use that configuration for all my future designs
USS Hercules NCC-31800 Hercules Class Fast Attack Heavy Cruiser. Titan ( huge) Scale.
Comments most welcome.
I like this design, an Excelsior with an Intrepid style.
Thanks Ed, I don't know how you see the Excelsior class in this design. I thought of it as more of a Sovereign class on steroids. I have a more cannon style custom design in the works. I had fits getting the warp nacelles on my newest custom design to look right. There are still a few parts with some of the symmetry off on the hard points. I'm glad we have off scaling.
Here is my first base design for a frigate.
Took a cue from Edladner and have put together some quick turrets. One large and the other "point defence" (they are actually sitting on the point defence module).

Cool ship, it's fun to see how different people use parts. I've always hid non-weapons on the bottom of the ship. I may rethink that now.
I did the Excelsior Class in the Alpha two ship designer but Beta broke it. I was going to upgrade it and it was all grayed out in ship designer even after unlocking all tech. I was going to remake but I found it harder to do than my original design.
In response to Rand Johnson, reply no. 387:
I'll give it another shot. I was always moving the mouse or using another key before, so the ship never rotated up. I thought I did hold one or the other mouse button, but again, I think I was moving the mouse. Thanks.
Mean while back the home world
example of how big the ship is
Cancel need to be changed to "cancel ship" and have a confirm box pop up!
GRRRRRRRRRRRR
The Drengin decided to be a pain and switched their weapons, which meant I had to change my defences. So I threw together some variants of my frigate based around the other defences.
The Armour variant.
And the Shield variant

So here's another one of mine:
Here is a pet peeve I have about saving ships in the designer. I would like to be able to overwrite the old ship files when I am upgrading my ship. As of right now that feature is not available. I have to delete old ship designs after saving newer ones for the same ship. In GC2 we had the ability to overwrite designs of the same ship and I would like to see that feature in GC3 as well.

I agree, and I would like to add that it would be nice to have this feature available for templates as well as custom built, exported components, if possible.
I would support the idea of when upgrading a ship to a newer design that instead of overwriting the old ship design it is included in a blueprint as the viable upgrade path. So next time you play you have the old version and as you unlock the new tech you get the new version automatically unlocked for you. Make it a path ship upgrade save. Thus, we can customize exactly how all our ships will upgrade on the path to empire dominance.
We need a cleaner and safer way to get rid of old designs/parts/templates. There is no fail safe at the moment.
I guess I was thinking purely cosmetically--but you are 100 percent correct regarding functional changes. It would be nice to have some manner by which we can create an upgrade path.
The only area in which I think this will become tricky is when players decide to go with a different tech order. For example, if I start in a tiny galaxy, my tech order will probably be vastly different from what it would be in a large (or bigger) galaxy.
So if I didn't research sensors next (which would lead to ShipName M2 from a previous game), but instead I researched beam weapons, would the new ship be ShipName M23 (because M1-22 were used in my previous game)?
Not sure if we could have something like ShipName M2, ShipName M2-b, etc. where the difference from ShipName M1 to M2 (from hypothetical previous game) is better sensors, but in the new game the difference is beam weapons and not sensors (M2-b ).
My peeve is mainly about custom ship designs. The games does not automatically upgrade them with newer weapons, defenses and armor, not even GC2 did that. We always had to go back to ship designer and do it ourselves.
As most of you know I primarily make my ships as custom Star Trek style designs. Every ship class, if you have followed cannon, while having a basic overall configuration looked different from one design to the next. There was never one design fits all. Every ship had a certain role or mission it was designed for. This is why I would like to be able to overwrite my custom designs.
Yes, but now they have the blue-print system. With a little bit of modding it can do it for you
The idea above was to allow for cosmetic as well as upgrade paths. As to the naming scheme, I would have the blue-print system set the naming scheme itself. Not saying it was perfect, but I know a certain sequence of ships that I want so I would like to be able to create that same sequence again if I so desire. If you have another sequence, it would be interesting to create multiple paths of ships. This is far to complicated in general, but they have a rough outline in their blue-print system right now. The type D battleships or the type L battleships and such. Not saying it is perfect, but it can be done.
Rand, it would be nice to allow the overwrite feature as well. The process is a little excessive at the moment, but then again we don't have to worry about names when we save the ships.
Your Star Trek style ships all look good. Could you try to do some Klingon ships with the Drengin parts / style?
