Greetings!First off, welcome to the Galactic Civilizations III Steam forums! We are so glad you're here! Before you post please read this as I'll try to answer some of the common topics that come up here.#1 $99!? For the Founder Edlite Edition?!Yes. The idea is to let GalCiv fans who are interested in the long-term success of GalCiv III. The Founder's Elite edition gives you:
The idea being a bit like some recent games that have come out that have let you do the same thing which can be convenient for those who just want to sit down and always have "everything".#2 Why not have a seperate option for those who don't want all that? When the BETA arrives, the Founder Elite version will go away entirely and have the regular version. We actually had this on GalCiv3.com where the standard edition was only $40. The regular version with early access will be discounted over the final price as a thank you to those willing to put up with Beta bugs. However, the ALPHA is a very different animal. It sucks. It's not fun. It's ugly. And for that reason, we decided that it made more sense to only share it with those who are looking to be with us for the long haul and thus looking at the long-term.By the time the BETA hits, the game should suck a lot less and be less ugly.#3 Why have an Alpha at all?The big reason for the public alpha is the same reason I had a public alpha back in 1993 for the original OS/2 verrsion of GalCiv (back when I was in college). Alpha access is early enough where we can experiment with new ideas that we may subsequently throw out. The downside is that it's a real sausage factory. People always imagine game designs being set in stone. But they're not. Having our most dedicated players sharing their ideas and thoughts early in the process can be helpful. Starbases in GalCiv came from the beta community (for example).#4 Why 64-bit only?We are looking for GalCiv III to be able to be enhanced and expanded on for a very very long time. GalCiv II was 32-bit and came out in 2006. By 2009, we could no longer add more stuff to it because we were out of RAM (all those ship parts for ship design and having thousands of unique planets gets memory intensive). 64-bit is cutting edge today but in 2021, it's going to be pretty passe. Having the base game be set up for 64-bit and DirectX 10/11/12 means we can do major updates to the game without having to start over.Anyway, hope that helps! I'll be around!
sarcasm How terrible!! /sarcasm
When GC3 is finally released, will it come with a printed manual like GC2 did? I certainly hope so.
That's highly unlikely, considering that there won't be a retail release. Although, you could print the manual yourself.
This:
And this:
AMEN!
Feature suggestion: Master of Orion 3 had this feature where the different races of citizens were tracked, and had different bonuses/abilities and could colonise different classes of planets. A diverse civilisation had significant advantages because it could colonise more planets, and focus research/trade/war more effectively. There were sigificant challenges with morale and interplanetary migration, of course.
The whole time I played Gal Civ 2, I was thinking "this is what a modern MOO looks like, the only thing it's missing is citizen races. I hope they put it into Gal Civ 3, if it ever gets made".
At the time, I rationalised it because Gal Civ 2 was released at retail, so had to appeal to a wide audience. The PC game market was declining thanks to consoles (no smartphones or tablets yet?) and so retaining maximum market share was imperative. Also, the impressive AI took a lot of resource - a problem which is meant to be addressed by the move to 64 bit. Lastly, I was getting older and us few turn based strategy gamers no longer had the time.
Now, the PC game market is completely different - a lot more people play games, and this game is targeted directly at people like us. Mass appeal may be less important than perfectly serving a significant niche.
Please please please please please!
and think of the expanded modding possibilities!
I have been a user of Galciv since its initial launch on the os/2 operating system. I would like to see an option in Galciv 3 for a race or civilization that is based on egalitarianism and collectivity. I know this is demonized in this capitalist society, but it is an every day fact of life for the working class both here and globally. The strategy would be to unite as many as possible to overcome the greedy exploiters in other civilizations by fomenting armed revolution and civil war against the exploiting ruling classes. There is a wave of populism sweeping the globe to counter austerity and imperialist war and racism. I would like a game option that would reflect this reality in our culture.
Is this going to be a steam only deal? I hate using steam or other such services, I just want to have the game and play it without all the tracking and what not offered by those middle men.
I am loving GalCiv3 so far! Do you guys plan on releasing all new major and minor alien race 'packs' as DLC after the initial release and between expansions? These would be really great additions seeing as the galaxies (from what I have read) will be much larger.
In GalCiv2 I liked some of the fan created races (a few were even rendered in 3d which was nice) but I crave more official GalCiv races with their own little storylines to go along with them. It would be cool to have over time a huge array of official races the computer could draw from when selecting random opponents and it would also deepen the GalCiv universe even more than it already is.
Keep up the good work!
That's too bad, I love a real manual. In fact I have my GC2 manual by me now.
I'm wondering if I can upgrade my edition to the Elite founders for the DLC and stuff?
You can yes, just contact customer support and they will help you.
You can do so right here.

Nice job ID, now there's only twenty questions left to answer! lol.
I just upgraded to the elite pack. Now correct me if I'm wrong but I should have access to the elite stuff immediately right?....now to name a star and i love the fact that the elites get the DLC and stuff like that.
Will this game be steam locked? I don't mind steam. I just can't see myself paying full price for DRM locked games. Thanks.
Where do I download the game game at?
On Steam. If you purchased it from Stardock, you should have a code to activate the game on steam.
^^Why is it that someone from SD couldn't answer this, or any of the questions still up here?
Probably because it was the weekend and there is only so many threads that Stardock can sift through.

its always like this, and if there's only so many threads they can go though then that's my point. If they can't read all the founders post now, later it will be totally hopeless.
We look at as many threads as possible, although it's not always possible to respond to each and every one.
That's sad. The alpha process needs to be more collaborative.
I think they provide enough feedback to the players and have been collaborating quite nicely. I don't think they need to respond to every thread or question arising if the community can answer that question instead.
