Before you decide to start a new post grumbling about the $99.00 price tag and the danger of Alpha releases, etc. Read this post first!
I've purchased just about every game Stardock has released over the years, and as far as I've seen, they keep their promises. There WILL be DLC/xp for GC3. In fact, if their past installments of the game are any indication, there will likely be three or more expansions, all meaty enough to be standalones.
You are correct in the fact that things can go wrong during Alpha access, and it has happened before with other producers- but this is Stardock. Galactic Civilizations is their flagship game- the benchmark of 4x space strategy; there is no risk of this game not reaching completion.
Yes, $99.00 is a lot of money for a game, but you must keep in mind the DLC that you WILL receive in time with that one-time price. If you were to pay full price for the game (~$50), and there are 3 DLC's (@$30 per DLC) you are already over $110 and that doesn't include the expansion packs! That doesn't even include the other early access goodies.
A lot of people aren't pleased with the state of the modern gaming industry. Alpha-releases are not popular with everyone, however, there are plenty of individuals who have shown they are willing to pay to playtest, and as a result, most developers are adopting this framework. If you are going to rage, I'm afraid you have to rage at the players who have made this happen over the past few years.
Ultimately, if you don't agree that it's worth the price, that's fine! It's your money afterall.
Please don't troll the forum with your erroneous gaming-ethics, however.
Thanks for your time- hopefully this will have changed your mind.
Well fortunately no one here is really crying about the price tag
On Steam its a different story
Steam? Moaning on Steam, you're joking right? Jk.
Yeah just a couple here so far. Wanted to nip it in the bud though.
I do believe some issue do arise with the new banners that are now available for advertising. They suggest you can get early alpha access for $99. To me that suggest that all I'm getting is the game and alpha access.
I just saw a pop-up on steam and thought that the game itself was $99 dollars with alpha participation (even though I know better). I think that these banners (if possible) should be switched to say something about becoming an Elite Founder today through Steam.
This will change the mentality of some of the people who see the price tag and think that there is no way any game is worth $99 dollars. These same people would see the Elite Founder tag and think that is for super-fans or there are more perks than just the alpha access. This I think will mitigate some of the complaints.
It's clearly stated in the game description, and there's only so much you can do to inform someone of the details. If people are't going to take two seconds to read the basic description, then not much else will help them.
Every game on Steam that is an Early Access game has people complaining about the price tag or something. 99% of the Steam forums are just trolls.
The system is working as designed.
IF those users had gotten just the alpha at $40 I think the odds would be high that they'd be on various forums saying how bad the game was. It is better to see people complain about the price of the Founder Elite Edition than seeing people complain about the alpha being an alpha.
It's a bit of a shame its's on the steam store though (hear me out!). Mostly because the people there love to lose their skulls over prices.
Despite the fact that those same people will shell out $100 EVERY DAMN YEAR for the latest CoD shooter $60 plus the Seasons Pass $40. For what amounts to a few maps and gun or two of extra content....
I mean even Civ5 would cost you $110 just for the base game ($50 at release) and just the 2 expansions ($30 x 2).
Both Planetary Annihilaton and Prison Architect got a lot of flack for thier pricing schemes. I woudln't worry about it. The trolls who whine about that were never 'customers' to begin with.
It is like someone was watching Idiocracy and the people in the future jumped through the TV and now spend all their time on gaming websites.
When the actual game comes out at the actual price, all of this will be forgotten.
May I suggest
----------- End of Thread ----------
Why did I ever open the steam forums...
I think I may need therapy after reading the abysmal stupidity people threw out there. I never realized faith in humanity could fall so low...fortunately the forums here do a good job of bringing it back up again.
I think of it this way, I paid 100 bucks for a game that I'll want in 12 to 18 months when it is released anyhow and will cost 50 bucks or so. Certainly there will be some XP's and likely some DLC's along the way. I get all those for the extra 50 bucks so this certainly is a savings overall.
Oh and as a bonus, I get to see the Alphas and learn to play from the very beginning. I worked up to Crippling level on GC2 (having bought it well after UE came out since I wanted another 4X game than MOO2 to play) and hopefully will early experience with GC3 when it comes out I'll be able to handle even higher levels.
Do I mind having Stardock hold my 100 bucks longer than if just bought the game and XP's as they came out? Hell no since I am getting a long term discount and since Stardock may be using the money to help pay their programmers now!
.. neilkaz ..
True that. Look at all the raging (death threats to developers in extreme cases) that goes on about 'finished' free to play games. You'd get people complaining they felt ripped off/betrayed no matter what.
You either have faith in the developer or you don't and this is reflected in your choice to buy or not to buy the $99 package. It's also worth noting that I haven't yet seen anyone who did buy it making any angry 'gimme my money back' posts.
I keep popping over there hoping for some good discussion but every time I open that page 9/10 threads are on about the price. I wouldn't mind but it is the same argument over and over again... people complaining about greed, other 'long time fans' (hmmmm) bemoaning the use of early access without seeming to realize this style of open development is how Stardock has always done things and ignoring the fact that it is actually great value and more generous than a lot of high priced early access games have offered.
I honestly have no idea why I still look there I am at least glad there is a buyer only feedback forum over there for some more relevant discussion.
I completely agree. Better to have people moaning about the price and still interested than put off if they jumped into something they thought was a full release.
Personally looking forward to the *I should have picked up the founders edition* posts over the next few years .
Here's something to cleanse the pallet a bit with soem old school
0:41-03:00 covers my basic premise
For all the claims of 'greed', most people in the game industry will tell you, there are a lot of other places to make better money than making games. Most people make games because tehy love it. And they'd rather make less money doing it.
I paid 80$ for galciv2 ultimate edition, refurbished last November from amazon. Just to get a physical copy! This game is well worth the money.
