I've never actually played a Galactic Civ game, so I'm basing this post purely on research off the GalCiv wiki.
So from what I learned from GalCiv2, planetary invasions are done first by eliminating any enemy ship in orbit (a ship occupying the planet's tile) and the moving a troop transport onto the planet. Depending on your soldiers (morale, tech, mini-soldiers) and a chosen tactic, the game rolls your odds against an enemy planet's soldiers (morale, tech) and planetary defenses. The victor of these rolls captures the planet.
I was wondering how planetary invasions would be portrayed/handled in GalCiv3.
Personally, I would appreciate diversity in ground forces, maybe 3 classes of ground units - infantry/armor/support (or artillery). Depending on how they're used in an invasion your odds go up? Perhaps even a little more depth to planetary invasions?
Nothing substantial is currently known about galciv3s way of doing it. I hope there are less variables, and we can garrison planetary units on the planet like we do fleets.
I personally think Stardock is very creative and will make a fun, immersive, relaxing game.
if you've never played the game, why make a account and ask something like this?
DARCA
@Op: You should give GalCiv2 a try, its worth it and the complete edition can be had for cheap.
I have a suggestion after I saw the planet screen.
Why not have a simplified, fast paced Risk type game(unit replenishment for defenders, reinforcements for invaders if any) when you invade?
Ground combat has always been pretty boring in the series, but I do miss the "toy soldiers" from Dread Lords; it was so much fun watching tens of billions of civilians and soldiers get butchered needlessly and fall like lead paperweights while tanks and carriers exploded like bombs... Good times.
I hope a few minor "tactical" and strategic elements are thrown into the mix for the battles beyond just the invasion tactic; drop-zone selection, liberation and not domination, terrain considerations and customizable ground forces come to mind. I doubt they'll happen in the base game, but hey, can't a man dream?
Our dreams and creativity allow many things to be possible that would never be. If you knew code and had the right programs, you could make what you wanted eventually. (if one dude can make a game, have it be successful, and start a multi million dollar company, anyone can. Lol.)
Double post
I asked because I found out about this game only a few hours ago. I was searching online for a good 4X space-themed game and this came up. I'm genuinely interested in this game and am asking these questions to see if I'm ready to commit $100 to support the team in their Alpha testing.
Could we get a dev to explain their plans for planetary invasions here? This just might push me over.
The last thing the devs said about it was in the Q&A:
Paul Boyer: We have a new planetary invasion system in the works, but we don't want to comment on it until we are happy with it.
So, expect to hear something new about it, when you hear something about it. Also, whatever they came up with might change during the alpha (or even the beta), so I wouldn't base the purchase on it.
I would love to see a Command & Conquer style of planetary invasion! Anyone ever play A Bridge Too Far for Win 95/98? Even something simple like that! Depending on how many troops you have in your transports and what your research level is, you can manually go in and invade the city. You would be able to try taking over a building, but if the troops are too heavy, then you could always blow it up, in which you would lose having that building if your invasion was successful! I can't think of any other games that have a feature like that. Could be a first...
If they don't want to make ship battles fancy enough that they become the focus of the game, I really don't think they're going to put a mini RTS in for planetary invasion.
true... but you have to admit Tridus, it would be pretty sweet!
Oh, absolutely.
And while we're on the subject, espionage missions should put you into a first person stealth mission like Thief.
Given enough time, we'll have one game to rule them all.
BOOM! Perfect! lol
Crazy to think that where computer are going, there will be a game like that out there. But who is going to make the first one and start it all???
Of course I shouldn't base my purchase on a game that's still in the works. However, I am highly interested in supporting the devs by means of money and feedback... I guess sort of like a kickstarter. I just want to see what ideas they have in store for this game.
Being one of the bigger Galactic Civilizations fanboys, my opinion is a 'little' biased towards the game and Stardock, but you should give them the benefit of the doubt; they have very consistently delivered excellent games, and in the one occasion where they didn't they immediately made up for it by essentially replacing it for free with expansions at no cost to the player. Add to that the deal you get by purchasing the founder's package (All future DLC for free) and you have a purchase worth $100 (... Or you could wait a few years and buy it at the Steam sale... lol).
Also, Space Ponies!
Good news is that alpha is starting up later this month, and there will be videos and posts about it. No doubt once planetary invasion is in the game you'll hear about it, and you can make a decision then. (So long as the they're still selling founders editions of course.)
For someone on the fence right now like you are, I'd suggest waiting the couple of weeks it'll take to start seeing the alpha in action before you spend your money. You can always choose to join if you like what you see.
Do yourself a Favor and get GalCiv 2, not only will you be supporting the Devs, but you will also be playing a Very good and polished game immediately. Furthermore, if you then want to purchase the Founder Elite package, you will be better able to compare the game with what they did before which should result in more relevant feedback.
You're being far too reasonable and intelligent about this! What kind of fan are you?!
The old kind.
Wait...your...old?!?! Nahh, the Tridus I never met but like is a Canadian cat and computer loving lumberjack/software design something, that spends to much time on the forums to be "old". When your old you take naps and don't give a shit about "confounded tec gizmos!" You obviously do care and have your wits still, so your not out of date yet. Let's try this again, what type of fan are you?
Really? And haven't I told you all how "young" I am? I am most definitely in my second childhood.
Lol. I love old people my dad is "old" I just don't like when people willing give up living and become complacent with being "old" when there is life to live, people to help, and things to do. from what little i know of Tridus he doesn't seem "old" like he said. Instead he's...ageing there's a difference . (my dad has been in one big childhood my hole life. )
Planetary invasion in multiplayer should drop the attacker and defender into a counterstrike 1v1 on de_dust. The defender would be CT, for defenders advantage, troop numbers are represented by how many lives each person has - knife is an insta win
OP I echo everybody else here, if you're looking forward to GC3 pick up GC2 Ultimate and enjoy!
Fate,
Holy shit, toke me a minute there to realise what de_dust is. Oh, nostalgia.
