Hi everyone,
I am thinking of installing one of the various 1st-person RPGs that I've missed playing so I can spend some time until newer stuff comes out. I've been frustrated with SKYRIM (I keep overmodding it and it keeps crashing on me) so I need something else for now until I re-install it and give it one more try.
I am ambivalent between the following choices: (1) Kingdoms of Amarlur, (2) The Witcher II and (3) Gothic III. I haven't played either one of them.
I love a good story but I also love eye-candy - many armors, crafting, nice homes with decorations, trophies, loot etc.
What would you recommend?
Best, Bendiwolf
have you looked into Elder Scrolls Online? It looks pretty amazing! I loved Skyrim on xbox! But idk if i want to pay $15/month for ESO for as little time as i have to play video games...
I never had problems with Skyrim crashing. I have almost 3 dozen mods installed. The secret is testing them and seting them up properly. And the load order is also important. Not saying a faulty mod cant make the game crash but if you proceed carefully you should be able to isolate it and remove it.
Btw FarCry 3 is kind of like Skyrim but with guns.
ooooooo, i forgot about far cry 3!!!! AMAZING game!!!!
I would recommend the Witcher 2. You can't go wrong with it.
Fallout 3 and New Vegas.
Morrowind (TES 3). The graphics are a bit dated but ohmygawd it is awesome! Its atmosphere is off da hizzy, mah home-puppy!
Call of Cthulhu>Dark Corners of Earth. Not really RPG, more of an action adventure with RPG elements, a fantastic game nevertheless. More concentrated on following the story rather than being sand-boxy with various side quests...
Yes, the graphics are dated. And the vanilla game, the people have a stylish lankyness to them. However, there are several great mods that enhance the graphics. Vert has a mod that enhances the plants and trees. Awesome. Best game for story in TES series, imho. BTW, I mod skyrim with about 20 mods. No problem. But have plan before you mod. And use Wyre Bash or another mod handler... essential. And pay attention to dependencies. Does mod need Script extender, etc. ?
I disagree. Its a puzzle solving game. Essentially you have to do exactly what the section of the story calls for. And what RPG elements there are are negligible. Horror puzzle solving game is all it is, and annoying at that.
The best RPG I've ever played, and its first person, is Vampire:Bloodlines. When it came out it was quite buggy and so failed financially. Years later there's a user created patch that fixes a lot. Its a brilliant game, lots of replayability. It has 'puzzles', but you can go about doing them in different ways using a variety of skills from the old school World of Darkness vampire clans. Such as talking your way through a situation, going invisible and sneaking to get things, or just firing tons of bullets or beating bad guys up. You need to feed and there's mechanics for that, and the atmosphere...FUCK, its so good. AND the soundtrack is amazing. Plus the voice acting and characters are quite good. Same with the story. They even have a hinted at explanation as to why you as a neophyte vampire gain power quickly, and it fits in with the mythos of the Vampire:The Masquerade table top RPG. Its on steam and the player created patch works with steam's version. Look for the part of the game inspired by The Shining, or playing as a Malkavian('insane' vamps) and the tv talking back to you.
I'll second Fall Out:New Vegas. Fall Out 3 was a huge disappointment. New Vegas is a vast improvement.
Well linear story based games are usually like that, you got to do what the game wants from you to let you go further with the story. I see no problem there. Personally i would rather follow the preset story, which is at least interesting, than grinding another boring side-quest just to hone my "skills" to improve my character.
The RPG elements are indeed not very pronounced, but they are there - like for example you need different medical equipment to heal wounds to different body parts - thats pretty much beyond standard universal medkit collecting, which just improve your healthbar.... or just waiting for a moment until it automatically restores...
Ill give you the point about puzzle solving, but i said its adventure. Are they not typically puzzle solving games?
Finally i completely disagree that its annoying. As far as i am concerned, its one of the best and most atmospheric horror games i played and i would recommend it to anyone, who is into Cthulhu mythos or likes horror games in general.
That song that plays every time you walk into that Goth church nightclub vampire den... It stuck in my head so much that I bought the album.
Heh yeah I bought Chiasm's album that had the song from the Santa Monica night club.
I'd get it from Steam. It works on win 7 just fine. The user created patch is here, you really need it to fully enjoy the game:http://www.patches-scrolls.de/patch/4647
Thank you! How about the official patches? Does the unofficial include it? Already downloaded the patch VTMBup88 in anticipation of the game.
The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Deus Ex (Sorta'), The Witcher. Good games.
Planetside 2 is an MMOFPS, but it also has many RPG elements as well.
If I may ask, why do you want a first-person game? I think you're limiting the choices a bit/a lot.
I believe if you buy it from steam the official patch is already applied. If not, or you get the game without the official patches, you can find em all at planetvampire.com
Kingdoms of Amalur and The Witcher 2 are not 1st person though...
Skyrim on the ps3 was that beautiful perfect game you always dreamed of. But the time is so short before lag kills the game its hard to get anything done, Fallout is the same. It's still worth playing till it inevitably happens so don't feel bad. (its Bethesdas fault.) even though the problems won't go away and your save file will rise to 15MB and higher, Skyrim is still the best RPG ever made IIHO. (it's sad the best 1person RPG doesn't even work)
DARCA
Not true RPG but:
Dishonored is great...
Vampire: Bloodlines is one of the best games of all time.
