Dark days are upon the besieged inhabitants of Sol III. However, an incandescent explosion of hope returns to Earth in the form of Admiral D.L. Bradley and his unstoppable fleet of vengeance as our story begins. But what price have Bradley and his soldiers paid for the terrible weapons they now turn against the Drengin menace?
As I noted last week, we're working hard on bringing more character and flavor to the Galactic Civilizations universe. The foundation of that effort is to bring the leaders to life, not just with the wonderful visuals our talented cinematic artist Kevin Manning has crafted for each of them, but with personalities of their own.
Joining Harondin Gaul of the Iridium, this week I bring you Admiral D.L. Bradley of the Terran First Fleet. The Terrans have long been known as the diplomats and traders of the galaxy, but the Thalan have never stopped their dire warnings of an apocalypse started by the humans. Seeing their allies in the Grand Coalition all but exterminated and watching billions of humans slaughtered as their empires burned will have an effect on any species. The Drengin/Yor sneak attack at the conclusion of the Dread Lords war may not work out so well for the belligerent aliens after all...

* * *
The self-imposed exile Admiral D.L. Bradley led his fleet into has taken its toll on the once-friendly leader. Giving the order to turn tail and run from forces he knew would simply turn their guns on undefended Terran colonies cost Bradley dearly, and he is determined to make that sacrifice count.
Sixteen years have passed in our galaxy since the Terran First Fleet escaped into the pocket dimension that previously housed the Dread Lords. Sixteen years of the fleet being cut off entirely from the fate of the rest of the human race.
Sixteen years for Bradley and his veterans to prepare the hell they so dearly wanted to unleash on the treacherous Drengin and Yor that shattered the Grand Coalition and killed untold billions of humans and their allies.
The time in isolation tempered Bradley’s already steely soul into a core of pure diamond. His demeanor, once friendly, is now cool and professional. Only by locking away his anger and grief at the aftermath of the Dread Lords war has he been able to remain in control and keep his fleet focused on the mission. After sixteen years, those emotions have atrophied from neglect. The mission is everything. Nothing that detracts from the mission is worth considering.
Despite his unyielding devotion to the vengeance he has pledged his life to, Bradley is an extremely competent leader. His intuitive understanding of interpersonal relations, morale, and diplomacy has kept the fleet unified in its purpose in the face of the harsh conditions they have endured. He can be accommodating and even gracious regarding disputes, requests, or treaties that he doesn’t see as affecting his core mission. As soon as Bradley feels that his primary goals are threatened, he flatly refuses to compromise and will fight to the bitter end to achieve them.
Terrans remain notable among the galaxy’s major species for their diplomatic gifts and innovative thinking, but the tragedy recently visited upon them has uncovered a hard core within not just Bradley but in the collective Terran soul. Thalan warnings about the threat Terrans supposedly pose to the galaxy, once written off as deranged nonsense, are becoming easier and easier for the other races to heed.
He was a colonel at the time. It was mentioned in the DL campaign, and you can still see that rank on his badge.
The DL campaign isn't clear on this, but Earth HQ most likely knows where the barrier comes from. As for the field dropping, that will only happen once Bradley deactivates it (the barrier is self-perpetuating).
Looking forward to seeing the Drengin learn a painful about screwing with humanity. May this be transmitted to all the Drengin forces, during humankind's counter attack.
I do not think it will possible for anyone to rein Bradly in, with some serious political or military muscle. I could see him becoming the top dog of the entire human race, even in a democracy. The Terrans colonies enslaved, and their home-world trapped behind a barrier ever fearful of the day the Drengin finally find a way through. Then out of no where in Bradly and his fleet, they drive off the Drengin, from Earth, liberate enslaved colonies, and restore hope, where hope was once lost. The guy would would beat every competitor at the polls by double digits in the in the seventies if not higher. Since it's been stated that Bradly won't allow anything to interfere his "mission", earth leaders will have to be very careful not to tick off humanity's hero less they risk losing their jobs, through votes or through force.
I think a variation of this at the start of the battle would be better.
Earth had whole goddamn Solar System as playground in the minimum before hyperdrive. That is gigantic pile of resources to tap on. Earth itself most likely has had it's untapped resources consumed ages ago.
After bubble came up, nothing new comes to Earth. Everything they have to play with is there. If you need 5 cubic meters of unobtanium and Earth total only equals 4, you are not getting more. If you need 5 tons of steel, you have to recycle something old.
Earth kept inside bubble is zero sum game, everything gained materially is out of elsewhere.
I'm quite fond of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nTwBF7dM7g as the theme for the Terran fight back, it has that nice slow build up until the portal opens then bam! Added bonus, it's from Halo 2
Edit: On a side note, I seem to have forgotten how to embed a link behind text. help please?
Fate,
Not bad. If we're going into the game-music territory, then this fits even better:

Nice, On a related note, this is what this made me think about

Who gave that song a thumps-down? Are they out of their mind? That's a great song!
The music in this thread is sufficiently epic to have made me suddenly overwhelmed with excitement for the alpha! Two weeks is too long to wait now!!
But really, how does one imbed a link like that Gaunathor?
I already told you in my previous reply. Not sure, how I could make it clearer than that.
Ah, I see. Cheers mate! My apologies for that brain fart!
I've always sort of theorized that they were a single character split in two, though.
A nice twist could be that the Thalans work with the Humans in hopes of being able to guide them into not destroying everything.
Alan Bradley became Draginol, the Dark Mithrilar I think.
DL Bradley is theorized to become Draginol, but I was actually speaking in Watsonian terms. I've always theorized something like this happened:
Edit: On an unrelated note, I'm really interested to see what GalCiv III is going to do with the idea of factions within a single race.
Hi qrtxian!
does anyone know what happened to Alan Bradley or Jenna Casey?
I couldn't care less about the mithrilar. There usefulness has ended its time to kill kill kill yor and drengin. Or let them fight them selves as the yor are programmed to kill ALL organics.
only the altarian, Terran, iconian, yor, and thalan have a real part to play anyway in the future. (iconians need more publicity IMHO)
DARCA
Yeah, this is something that has occasionally been striking me. The system with GalCiv II was that the sandbox was the heart of the game and the campaign was there to introduce the story and background to players, and Stardock has said they're sticking with that. But much of the current backstory involves a very specific story that doesn't entirely translate into a standard 4X setup.
This could be an excuse to experiment with different starting conditions with different races when in Sandbox mode. i.e, When starting with D.L. Bradley you just came out of your pocket dimension and do not have a homeworld. Instead you have ships. You could have a few war ships and a few colony ships to allow you a faster initial colonization of a few planets to compensate the slow start of lacking a pre-existing capital. It Would take work to balance properly but could be interesting.
1. D.L. Bradley wasn't in the first fleet. He us on earth. So we have a home world. We blasted the blockade in the promo video.
2. Bradley is the first name of Bradley Wardell.
3. DL and warDELL sound similar.
4. There were only two earth characters in galciv2 and both named Bradley?!?!
We have a NARCISSISTIC MEGALOMANIAC AI GENIUS ON THE LOOSE!!!! lol. George Lucas-Luke Skywalker. Its common, I have done it to.
That was Arcea :3
Whatever... Why wouldn't we have earth?
we also have dread lord tech and and a huge nearly indestructible fleet and soldiers. (our damage output is so much better than the enemies were they are destroyed before they can dent our armor. Of course earth is saved!!! But we are essentially a minor race with one planet. :'(
I second that. I'm a pulp fan all the way. We are playing a game after all.
Yes, and we all know what generally happens when Terrain mammals are backed into a corner. It won't be pretty, they aren't passive, but rather come out claws and guns a blazing... with all internal quarrels set a side (for the duration).
NelsMonsterX2 "A very meaty backstory for the Terrans this time around! Very BSG. "
Right on, almost every human wiped out or behind and barrier sounds like a great story line.
Well about drinking it doesn't work when you are having a good time. When you are trying to enjoy the moment the trick is to numb the moment so you can't savor it as much that is what drinking is like when you are having a good time. I think it is better to enjoy the moment than to take a tranquilizer A.K.A. alcohol when you trying to have a good time. So I agree why drink so you can't enjoy, or remember the moment. On a side note I noticed the ultra popular in school didn't drink in high school. When I thlyink of this it makes sense why drink when there is nobody to impress. They are also not rebellious. Why hate your parents when everyone is going to like you anyways. There is no reason to drink, but to impress other people who ironically don't really care if you drink, or not.
I would like to see a game as realistic as possible while still maximizing out the fun.
I like the idea of dividing the races into factions.
I would think in a scenario like this there would at least be one faction that would be trying to fly out of known space to plant a colony away from anyone. They might of already have had some planets hidden for this purpose already in case of an invasion. If they already had hidden planets they might of built a fleet for this purpose, or are currently building a fleet. If they are building a fleet that would at least explain why it took them awhile to join the war. The reason for being silent is that they didn't want a premature invasion of the reserve territory until they were able to have a good surprise offensive against the Drengins. Maybe even trying to set up a fake imprisonment like hogans heroes.
There is probably a human faction that wants to appease the Drengins at any cost. They are probably meeting with the Drengins. The other human factions probably hate these guys.
There is probably a faction that was oppressed before that is trying to take over now that things have changed. These guys are probably working two angles. One is that they are willing to surrender to the Drengin as long as they are allowed to run things, or enact revenge. The other angle is that the current system is in place has failed meaning it is time to have a new system in place. These guys are probabmeeting with the Drengin.
There are probably factions that have declared independencot e to try to stay out of war.hat
There could have been factions that have been forgotten, or have declared independence before the war. Also there could have been planets that weren't strong enough to have rebelled against earth that are now independent.
Anyone could have engineered a faction of mutants, or even intelligent humanoid animal warriors this could have been done since the war, or earlier. The explanation for delayed enterance could be the fact that they were created from a long dead faction, they were in cryogenic stasis all along, or it simply takes time to build a retalitory fleet.
Lets not forget the cybernetic option. There could have been a division on this the ones that want to keep the Human race pure while others felt that enhancing the body was better. I've just mentioned two different factions. This could be alien or human.
This could apply to any faction that lost the war. You could actually do this redundantly for each faction to make multiple factions for each race.
There could be Drengin faction who are tired of war, and want to stop the war. There could be a Drengin faction who either didn't like the treatment the Korath gave, or are setting up an underground for refugees from the war maybe sending them to a hidden planet that could be creating a new faction. This is actually a two faction idea. The second faction would be a mixture of all the conquered races.
The Korath could be regrouping for revenge. They might be working with the Terran's now.
There could be a group of Thalans who are actually upset for destroying the Terror stars. Maybe they thought the Thalans should have seeked a more peaceful solution instead of joining the Drengin in the war backing the atrocities of the Korath and the Drengin.
Lets not forget about the original Thalans not just the ones from the future.
Now that I'm done with all the extra factions ideas I would like to see in a game with more factions or different leaders for each faction. Lets talk about what the current factions could do.
The Krynn could declare a Jihad against the Drengin since they weren't in the original war allying with the Terrans, and the Altarians. Maybe only with the Altarians because the Terrans may be that bitter because the destruction of the Terror stars.
Now that the terror stars are destroyed, and the Thalan's have saved the universe they turn on the Drengin and the Yor with the Terran's, and the Altarians helping them. Possibly two seperate wars one would be the Altarians and Thalan only because the Terrans are still bitter about the Terror stars while the Altarians are cordinating with the humans.
The Yor go on a campaign to exterminate all organics afterwards either the Drengin, or the Yor win with the Terran, and the Altarian's ambushing the winner at the end.
The Iconians decide to go from neutral to an ally of the human and the Altarian factions. Catching the Drengin in a surprise ambush of their fleet when they didn't expect the cowardly Iconian to enter the war.
In spite of the Altarian warnings the Drengin try to occupy Altaria only for their forces to get wiped out by precursor stuginff and dark energy.
The Altarians attack the Drengin with a bunch of Precursor goodies. The explanation of a delayed retaliation is it took them that long to learn the more powerful weapons.
A computer virus could have corrupter the Yor making them ally with the Humans, and try to annialate the Drengin empire.
You could do a combination, or all seven ideas in the campaign.
Now lets not forget a desperate underdog human faction would resort to terrorism. One explanation of how they could be managing all this time under a forcefield is the invention of the replicator.
Here are some ideas I came up with for the game.
As far as the description of the human race in the future I have noticed that the people are getting weaker, and are becoming more entertainment junkies, and less socialble. Not sure if they are getting smarter. They seem to be not as good at math as they used to be. They seem to be calling the less complex stuff complicated. A good example people are calling windows complicated now days. The geeks are what people are striving to be now days. Not the cool people.
