Some other discussions on the forum prompted me to think about what would be my top 5 favourite 4X games ever. While I am pretty sure about the two firsts, the 3 others are not as certain. There are a few other games I considered but I eventually settled with this.
This is a For Fun thread, do not feel obligated to explain your choices. Hopefully this might prompt some people to try some games they did not before, or discover some underdog gems. Although in my case my choices are quite mainstream.
1. Galactic Civilization II
2.Civilization IV
3.Alpha Centauri
4.Master of Magic
5.Colonization ( original Dos game )
True dat.
I still played SMAC; sometimes modded, but usually just a couple of regular (Transcend without crawlers ) games a year, mostly for the breakthrough screens.

LH does not seem to be coming up very often...
Ocassionally I see it 5th....3th....a few 2nd....but not often.
I'm hoping that LH 2.0 readjusts everyone's list to 1st.
That would be nice, It seems that the more Stardock works on elemental, the better it gets. While not in my top 5, LH would most certainly be in my top 10. It is good but I never fell in love with it. I am hoping I can fall in love with the Next elemental Game.
1) Galactic Civilizations II
2) Civilization-series
3) Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes
4) Master of Magic
5) Master of Orion II
NB! If we can call Europa Universalis IV a 4X it undertakes the second place on my list.
Pretty standard choices.
1 ) Civilization 4
2) Birth of the Federation
3) Galactic Civilizations 2
4) Master of Orion 2
5) Fallen Enchantress Legendary Heroes
I do have two honorable mentions:
Emperor of the Fading Suns
Old SSG game Reach for the stars
There were some really old ones like Empire that came out in the 80s before MOO and Civilization that I can't remember. My old mind is getting forgetful.
It is early in the morning and almost forgot that I was completely addicted to the Call to Power series by Activision. I loved this series. I also did lose some sleep over Alpha Centauri series. If 5 We're Seven they would be on the list.
Duh, mine stopped working even on XP, dunno why, maybe disk scratched. But I like it very much, sure.
Double yay!
Mind if I stand nearby?
1. Master of Magic
2. Age of Wonders SM
3. Civilization
4. Master of Orion
5. Fallen Enchantress LH
1. Birth Of The Federation
2. Galactic Civilizations 2
I've watched some youtube videos of other games and some look fun. I hear Master of Orion is great. But these are really the only true 4X games that i can remember playing continuously.
I am not a huge star trek fan by any means, but i loved the in game features! Very simplistic in terms of use, but the game play is also very in depth. The downside is that it takes so long when waiting for your turn once you get past turn 100-150 depending on computer speed...
GalCiv2 I am new to, but i really enjoy it so far! It runs very smoothly on my computer, but I feel it is also easy to become unorganized in the game. At times a little too much micro management/clicking...
Both are great games and I enjoy playing them!
I always feel that GalCiv 2 is pretty light in the needless micro side, at least compared to some other 4x. I cannot understand those people who claim they have spent 2 hours on a single turn. By making proper use of the in game tools i usually brisk through turns, even in late game. I do not micro to an obsessive level but I feel it is not particularly needed.
i think a lot of it is that i am new to the game and there are still a lot of aspects that i do not understand. so they seem a little overwhelming/too micromanaged to me for now! i'm sure once i start to understand the game more, i'll be a little less turn happy and be able to use these extra features to my advantage.
also, the entire time that i am playing galciv2, i am comparing everything to BOTF... LOL so i'm always thinking, wow i love this feature, or ohhh i wish it had this feature/setup...
1. Galactic Civilizations 2
2. Alpha Centauri: Alien Crossfire
3. Civilization II
4. Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic
5. Elemental: Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes
My #1 and #2 are very, very close, if not tied. I think I enjoy the overall gameplay a bit more in GC2, but the writing and the factions in SMAX are just so well done. It really is difficult for me to put one over the other.
While I did enjoy MoO and MoM back in the day, I never got hooked into them like I did with the early Civ games. Civ II is still my favorite in the series, though Civ V BNW is starting to make an impression on me.
AoW beats E:FE:LH due to wider variety of non-human races, 2 more "planes" to play in, siege battles, and multiplayer.
1. MOOII
2. MOO1
3. Civilization 2
4. Star Ruler (indie)
5. Civilization 5
4. Civilization 4
My apologies! Haven't tried Gal Civ II and at this point I'm waiting for the 3rd to come out and hopefully reach my number 1 spot!
OMG you havent tried GalCiv 2??? Seriously you owe it to yourself to buy this gem. I see you have the GalCiv 3 founder badge, this is funny because I assumed every GalCiv 3 founder pre ordered because they were GalCiv2 fans, I see I was wrong.
I actually had bought star ruler on impulse back when it was new. For some reason I did not really play it much it didnt stick with me. Im installing it now, will give it a go. After a couple years maybe ill feel differently
double post. See below...
1. Moo2
2. Civ 4
3. Galciv 2
4. Dominions 3(4)
5. Sword of the Stars 1
HM: Distant Worlds
HM: Warlock master of the Arcane.
FE and LH would make my top 10. Nothing really wrong with them, its just that the games on my top 5 have been around longer, and I still play them from time to time, which means they have lasting value FE and LH have yet to earn. Its not so much that FE/LH need upgrades, its more that time will tell if I fire them up and continue to play them in 5 years or so.
Ah, Call to Power. If only Brad could take up that concept, making a competing Civilization TBS 4X.
A community created a patch for Birth of the Federation. Just look around online, you can get the game free as well as the patch. It only slows down around turn 300-400 and then you just save and load the game again and yr good to go.
I've played so many 4x games a top 5 isn't really enough
1) Civilization series (otherwise the top 5 would be mostly the same game, i hated civ3 though, the rest is included here)
2)Ascendancy(still hating them for only re-releasing it on apple phones/tablets) And where's Ascendancy 2, it's been announced 15 years ago and apparently still being build.
3) HOMM series (3 is the best, after that it went downhill. And still ashamed for the people who had to resort to death threats for the ironforge expansion)
5) Master Of Magic
Honourable mentions: Galciv 2, Star Trek: Birth of the Federation, Alpha Centauri, Eador: Masters of the broken world, Warlock Master of the Arcane(was happy to see it mentioned before) Desciples series. I probably forgot a lot of great games.
Also, i recently found out about a spiritual Alpha Centauri ssuccesor called Pandora, anyone played it? Is it fun? Does it compare? It kind looks like the beforementioned Warlock
1. Age of Wonders II: Shadow Magic - Modern tactical combat focused game that shines in multiplayer.
2. Age of Wonders II - Like AoW II:SM but with critical balance flaws like combatheroes being overpowered and flying units with range attacks having unlimited attacks! (which means that if you can't fight back, you'll either lose or tie after 250 turns!)
3. Heroes of Might & Magic V - Only ever played campaigns cause this series is boring and broken on custommaps.
4. Master of Magic - Only played three games of it (and lost all) but I see why it is spoken of with the utmost respect. The spells...THE SPELLS!!! Visually, it's a product of its time and the balance, AI and some gamemechanics a bust.
5. Heroes of Might & Magic II - Legendary game that beats HoMM - HoMM V (haven't tried HoMM VI yet) in the castles and upgradedepartment.
This will sound weird here but I have never played any Elemental game and I dislike Galactic Civilizations as well as Civilizations.

@TheBirthdayParty: I've looked around online and have come across many projects that people started and never finished or projects that are still being worked on... It's been awhile since i looked around though, so maybe there are finally some that are done!
