Dear GC III team,
Been catching up on lot of reading and gaming these last couple of weeks (holidays!). One of the games I was playing was Civ V, which I played on a friends brand new laptop with touch screen. It was a surreal experience.
My question is - can GC III have touch controls implemented? More and more laptops will be coming out with touch capability this year and GC III can be in a position to take advantage of this.
Any thoughts on this guys?
Funny thing is, GalCiv2 worked pretty will with touch even not being optimized for it... I have done more than a few Twitch.TV live streams of gameplay like that using my Surface Pro 2, as well as in person demos of the Surface Pro for on the go gaming. Playing GalCiv2 on my Surface Pro is actually what got me an invite to the Surface Pro 2 launch event to talk about gaming on the Surface Pro. (Civ5, DotA, GalCiv2, WoW, Portal 2, etc)
Turn based games are ideal for touch support on so many levels. Most specifically because the action stops and it allows your hand to control the game, without you missing any of the action because your fist is in front of that half of the screen. I actually wrote about this here. http://denialesports.com/article/252-Microsoft-Surface--Strategy-Gamers
The Extra Credits team also talks about turn based games being great for touch. (While also noting some important design considerations.)
++ For a enhanced touch operation.
Not sure when I'd be using it, but this is one of the games I can actually see the appeal for. Strategy games are a favorite on my iPad for exactly the mentioned reasons.
I had to do some fancy Autohotkey stuff on my SP2 to get Endless Space, Heroes of Might and Magic VI, and Duel of Champions to work without mouse or keyboard input. Do you have any suggestions for someone looking to play GalCiv 2 that will make it as painless as possible? Stylus use, maybe? I'd rather stand on the shoulders of those before me than jump in and figure it out, so to speak!
Thanks!
Tactical games are among those few looking ideal for tablets. Especially turn-based games.
In the future, touch controls will become more and more important as more and more devices will support it.
BTW nice article Cyong_ . I completely agree that the experience with Civ V was great!
I look forward to have GC III with optimised touch controls. It will elevate the experience, and as GC games are such long lived games, there may come a time when all our devices are mostly touch devices, with the few exceptions of gaming PCs which would most likely need 3 million clicks per minute.
With new mobile devices coming out (especially with Tegra 1K power and Apples new chips), gaming on the tablet is becoming a reality. Not sure if GC III will be portable to Android or iOS, but it would really open up the market and help support the company. I know Stardock is committed to PC only titles, however, as the hardware for tablets, consoles and PCs are becoming more and more similar, it looks like the future is in unified gaming, i.e. cross platform games.
i just got the elite founders pack as soon as i heard this game existed, its by far one of my fav strategy games, however i nearly exclusivly use my surface pro 2 for stratgy games like sim city etc... and if this game does NOT come with touch support i think it would be a huge mistake especialy as touch is becoming quite a natural method of interaction.
it would be great to hear from someone in the know if thia is going to be a feature or not.
so looking forward to this game!
