Game Informer has some info and screenshots on the Oxide Games Nitrous Engine being shown at CES 2014.
"A small team of designers at Oxide studio designed the new 64-bit game engine for strategy games, which is being called Nitrous. The demo we saw featured two massive battalions of starships as they engaged each other in a massive space battle. The demo was entirely real-time and from a distance it looked like the the fleets were schools of fish quickly zipping in and out of cannon fire, but as we zoomed in on the action we could see that each ship was detailed enough that even the muzzle flashes from their cannons would illuminate their deck. I hope they are willing to help Ironclad in their (hopeful) development of Sins of a Solar Empire 2. That game would look nice with that new engine or something similar to it.
Any word on the system specs for the demo y'all showed Game Informer?
Well, at least in those screenshots game start to resemble massive, somewhat chaotic "battlefield", not just TES-style "giant" armies of five men. We already have Wargame, now we need Warspace... Sorry, played Game Dev Tycoon.
SoaSE was developed by Ironclad.
Is this true in any way? I thought the new Star Control is only at the first stages of development, and they haven't selected an engine.
It was confirmed in this interview.

What's so special about this engine? Seems pretty normal.
Heresy!
