Greetings!
Tell us a little bit about yourself and if you're interested in participating on our Skype #StarControl channel, post your Skype ID.
As for me, I'm Brad Wardell. I'll be the Executive Producer on the new Star Control game. I played Star Control 1/2/3 when they were first released back in the late 80s and early 90s. Star Control 2 consumed my life for many months and had a profound impact on my career.
Like many of you, I waited in hope that one day, Toys for Bob would be able to get back and make a new Star Control game (or if they couldn't get the rights to the original name and publishing rights a Ur-Quan universe game).
When the Star Control franchise became available to be acquired, I jumped at it. The designers of Star Control 1/2 run Toys for Bob still but it's now owned by Activision who won't let them participate on the new game.
As far as I'm concerned (and therefore Stardock), Paul and Fred *own* the Ur-Quan universe. Not just the source code but the aliens, ships, the lore, everything. I think most of my fellow fans feel the same way. So the new Star Control game won't be able to leverage the Ur-Quan and related aliens and history (unless Paul and Fred give explicit permission) but it also gives us, the fan community, who have given these matters much thought over the past 2 decades, an opportunity to establish a new continuity that can manifest itself in a AAA game with a multi-million dollar budget, veteran developers from Firaxis, Big Huge Games, Stardock, etc.
In short, we (and by we I mean you guys and us) know what a Star Control game should be like. But we also have the freedom to create a whole new continuity with new aliens, new histories, etc. without fear of having to retcon something or violate the Ur-Quan continuity.
With that in mind, tell us about yourselves.
heya my name is toka. i played sc1 and sc2 like crazy. so glad that there will be a new one. i want you to surprise me so i wont mention any wishes for sc5. only made an account and postet here to show you people my need for another game. go stardock go!
Hi all, I'm Dave. Star Control II was one of my very favorite games. Looking forward to the updated and enhanced version!
Hi Everyone,
I'm Andrew from South Africa. I think it was 1993 when my family first got a PC and SC1 was one of the first games we had on it. I really loved just playing melee repeatedly - wither against computer or my younger brother who hated losing . Some months later I got hold of SC2, and was spellbound. At first I would spend many an hour trying to figure out what to do and eventually give up, but I kept coming back to it until I eventually (a couple years later) finished it and ever since then, I still give it a play-through every year or two.
Over the years since then I have often wondered what SC would be like in full 3D, but always felt it wouldn't be able to keep the fast-paced action I really liked in hyper-melee. I haven't yet seen/read what the plans are for that beyond the Nitrous engine tests (I should scour the forums more), but I'm really hoping that Stardock can manage to translate that same style and fun gameplay into a modern game. Excited to see how it all turns out. Loving the stuff in the founder's vault so far
Cheers,
Andrew
My name is Eric "Frog" Elders (look me up on mobygames.com). I used to be a game software test lead, but have moved into schooling for IT network security/administration. I had forgotten that I signed up to be a founder (I know, I know who could forget that, right?) and just received the planet naming email. I downloaded the theme music and all I can say is WOW!
I am so looking forward to seeing where the gameplay and designs go. Just reading through the August dev blog really upped my interest and I am really liking the direction that the game is heading.
I was a HUGE fan of Star Control 3 (still installed on my computer and I play it from time to time). I hope my planet name gets approval.
thanks.
Hi, my name is Shane. I first started playing Star Control in 1991 while in college. i played it on a moderately slow 286 that just barely got the job done. My roommate as well as a lot of my hall mates would play 1v1 melee battles while marathoning Star Wars, Star Trek, horror movies, etc on VHS. So old school. We would start on a Friday night and the losers would ante up for our pizza collection. These were just some of the most memorable moments I have from college. I didn't play SC2 until many years after it had been released but I enjoyed it just as much as the original, maybe just a little more. Then I had forgotten, stopped playing these great games until I picked them up from GoG. I was tempted to pick up SC3 as well, but I had played it on a friends computer prior and it wasn't quite the same experience as the previous two. Even today I still find myself loading up the first two games for a quick match of melee every once in a while as time allows.
Howdy,
My name is Jon. I seem to be one of the younger folks here, having playing SC I & II when I was still in elementary. My brother, cousin, and I used to enjoy the melee battles, but I really found the story, races, and humor to be the heart of the series. In adulthood, having played through the Ur-Quan Masters, I can safely affirm it was not simply childhood nostalgia, but well-implemented aspects that came together to make the series great.
Recently having discovered this production, I'm excited and cautious for the progress of the series ahead. SC III felt like it missed its mark to me, and I greatly hope this addition doesn't do the same. Not being able to incorporate existing lore is a large hurdle to manage, but I am hopeful the team here can circumvent that issue in a way that doesn't exclude incorporating original lore when (hopefully soon) Toys for Bob finally comes to permit it. If such steps are made to preserve conflicts with the original lore, I would be happy to become a founding contributor.
I can be found as Immermnemion on Skype. I look forward to getting to know some of you in what I hope is a revival of a great series!
Greetings everyone!
Chuffed a new Star Control is in the works. Signed up soon as I found out!
Hope it is everything it can be
Hello all, my name is Garrett. I started playing in the early 90's, and every couple years would fire it up again. I still have the original 3.5" floppy disks. I was overyjoyed when the HD remaster made the interface on my computer so much better. I pre ordered yesterday, as a lifetime Founder, and am really looking forward to this. I'm not trying to think about it too much or use SC2 as a benchmark. Just want to be able to enjoy the game and a good bit of nostalgia. Cheers and Happy New Year all!
I just discovered this... I am elated. Immediately purchased the $99 founder's program.
I remember in Grade 5 (~1994) I went to my friend's house one day and he was telling me all about this Star Control 2 game. We went down to his family's computer in the basement and he had the starmap pinned up on the wall with sheets of notes. Looked like a man investigating a conspiracy. I was hooked when I played it.
I still have the game in my Archives on my modern computer, and of course the Ur-Quan masters. Incidentially I was considering going back and playing it again, or perhaps giving Star Control 3 a go again (never finished #3).
This makes me so happy. I truly hope this game is an amazing one. I also hope... and it saddens me to say this; that the opportunity isn't squandered, like so many games and IPs in this day and age. Obviously I have enough faith in StarDock, and I have had great fun with other games they have made, to immediately place my pre-order. I simply remain... skeptical. With all my hopes and dreams, knock it out of the park!
