Greetings!
Tell us a little bit about yourself and if you're interested in participating on our Skype #StarControl channel, post your Skype ID.
As for me, I'm Brad Wardell. I'll be the Executive Producer on the new Star Control game. I played Star Control 1/2/3 when they were first released back in the late 80s and early 90s. Star Control 2 consumed my life for many months and had a profound impact on my career.
Like many of you, I waited in hope that one day, Toys for Bob would be able to get back and make a new Star Control game (or if they couldn't get the rights to the original name and publishing rights a Ur-Quan universe game).
When the Star Control franchise became available to be acquired, I jumped at it. The designers of Star Control 1/2 run Toys for Bob still but it's now owned by Activision who won't let them participate on the new game.
As far as I'm concerned (and therefore Stardock), Paul and Fred *own* the Ur-Quan universe. Not just the source code but the aliens, ships, the lore, everything. I think most of my fellow fans feel the same way. So the new Star Control game won't be able to leverage the Ur-Quan and related aliens and history (unless Paul and Fred give explicit permission) but it also gives us, the fan community, who have given these matters much thought over the past 2 decades, an opportunity to establish a new continuity that can manifest itself in a AAA game with a multi-million dollar budget, veteran developers from Firaxis, Big Huge Games, Stardock, etc.
In short, we (and by we I mean you guys and us) know what a Star Control game should be like. But we also have the freedom to create a whole new continuity with new aliens, new histories, etc. without fear of having to retcon something or violate the Ur-Quan continuity.
With that in mind, tell us about yourselves.
Attempt number 2, hopefully firefox doesn't crash on me.
OK, my name is Felix 'Lixie' Lopez-Hjelm, and I hail from Earth in the Sol system. Am I doing it right here? No matter, though. I am a fairly young Star Control fan, as I didn't discover the series until a few years back and I've been playing the HD mod for the open sourced Ur-Quan Masters, which looks great while keeping the original style. For the most part. Even though I haven't been part of the fanbase for long I have used, on accident, my Aspergers powers to accumulate most of the lore. If only I could do the same for useful stuff, like my education. Would make my life a lot easier... Sigh. Anyway, I'm rambling.
I've attempted to build a Yehat Terminator using LEGO, but I've been unable to properly assemble it due to a lack of bricks. I have, however, managed to build an Ur-Quan Dreadnought in the game Robocraft. It does have some changes on its weapon arseal and some utility functionality, but the looks is essentially the same. I attempted to build an Earthling Cruiser as well, but found the build much too fragile for the game. Like the Earthling Cruiser actually is in Star control.
If it wouldn't be too much trouble I'd love to partake in the skype group, in case it is still a thing. You shall find my username the same as the one I use here: SuperTamaru.
I should have done this a while ago....
I played Star Control 1 on the Sega Genesis. It was by shear dumb luck that I bought the game when it first came out. I was bored with my current games, went to the store, and saw the clerk put it up on the wall behind the counter. I asked what the game was, he said "Something like Asteroids...probably stupid". I bought it anyways after looking at the back. I was hooked after my first game.
When I heard Star Control II was coming out, I called every single software retailer listed in Computer Gaming World. ETA, shipping times, if I need my mom to talk to the guy on the phone about her credit card, system requirements, etc. As soon as I got it in my little hands, it was another addiction to manage. I played Starflight 1 on the sega genesis quite a bit, and this was FAR AND BEYOND a much better experience, and thats saying something since Starflight kicked ass.
I've played the game about once every single year since its come out. I think I was responsible for most of the "D+" on the class math exams going through school because I recommended the game so frequently. Even my geometry teacher got hooked on it.
Star Control II is one of my favorite games ever, if not the top one. Wing Commander and Ultima VII are pretty close seconds. It helped define my childhood, just as GI Joe, Mario, and the stupid "Where's the Beef" Arby's commercial did.
I did a review on www.goodolddays.net about the game, and if you go read it you'll know exactly how I feel about this game.
I'm saddened (like everyone) that the game won't continue with the same story line. However, its time for a new generation to grow up with a new story line. 20+ years is just too long to go without a continuance of the original story. New game, new writers, new blood. Just don't make it suck.
I am very excited to hear about the modding tools. I really can't wait to see what the community does, since there is a lot of talent out there!
The first thing we ever did when i visited my best friend back in school in the early 90s is go play SC2 Melee against each other, we would play for hours on end as the ships and aliens occupying them was so intriguing, and seeing them actually press buttons and pull levers inside their ships, each with it's own special abilities and so well balanced add to the fact that you are constantly moving, sometimes by choice, sometimes not, bumping into asteroids, the center planet pulling you towards it etc. enhanced the excitement of real space combat !It was not until i started to play the quest when i realized this game goes much deeper than the arcade aspect only, which was awesome as just described, so what an exhilarating, breathtaking exploring adventure had i stumbled upon ! It felt like i was in space myself with my ship exploring the universe, because i was ! meeting interesting aliens, and scouting vast galaxies of planets ! Acquiring the awesome ships and meeting the aliens behind them. The more i played the more it felt real ! absolutely blown away, when i stumbled upon the starmap to see that there are 1000s of stars to travel to, each with it's own planet system ! ! !
Hyperspace, the feeling of being Far of in space where you can run into trouble and out of fuel enhanced the experience, being chased and rushing towards the closest star system to try and get away or engage and fight whoever is on pursuit, what an adventure ! !The greatness, excitement, the adventure of this game have been expressed by myself throughout this site countless of times, and more so on the official ur quan site before i knew about this site, so will keep my message here short.I was left with westwood which was the second best thing, playing dune 2 and the cnc series thereafter, but it could never fill the emptiness i have been feeling for 2 decades already, growing deeper with each year. For 20 years i have been left with an emptiness not easy to explain, and today i am HERE to witness the rebirth of a legendary quest exploring the stars once again by StarDock that can make it come true ! ! !
(Though star control is the best game ever made, there is one thing that can be carried over from the dune/cnc era, and that is mining and carryalls and repair bays and a refinery as i in depth described earlier, the difference would be, YOU the explorer would be controlling all the ships in realtime, that would be the ultimate wrt to the planet scouting aspect of the game. i also really like the protoss race in starcraft)
Hi all. I'm Mike. I've been a big fan of Star Control since I first got it on the Sega Genesis when I was just a kid. Got 2 and then 3 when they came out. SC2 would be my favorite and 3 would have been great if it wasn't for the Star System. But I know they wanted to do it that way to make it similar to SC1. I actually loved the planet lander feature on SC2. Being able to land, mine resources, and capture aliens.
Besides SC series, also was a big fan of the Star Flight game. Anyone remember that one? Seems that Star Flight and SC 2 had so many similarities.
A little about myself, I'm in my mid 30's and been a fan of Sci-Fi since I first read Foundation's Edge by Asimov when I was 9. Ever since then, I would read 2 books every summer till I finished all the Foundation Series, Empire Series, and Robot Series by Asimov. Then moved on to other books, but all were Sci-Fi, I could never get into Fantasy though. I've tried, but I guess it wasn't my for me.
I think because of Sci-Fi, it developed my great sense of imagination and enhance my knack for sciences. I truly believe that everything should be explainable and the only faith I have is that everything can be explained eventually. So when I make a story, I always ensure that there is a reason for it and not just because Magic. Sci-Fi also nurtured my ability to learn more about science and gain atleast some understanding in many of the science fields ranging from Geology, Anthropology, to Physics and Quantum Physics. It's funny how they say the best way to lie and make it believable is to tell mostly truth and then add a lie. Sci-Fi is pretty much that, Science based with a little Fiction added.
Anyways, I'm not just a space freak, I also enjoyed the Shadowrun games (except that xbox 360 one that ended up being a FPS, ughh....) and mostly anything RPG. Outside of gaming and reading, I'm a project and IT lead. I also enjoy talking to people and getting to know them. I'm very personable and with my wide understanding, I can get along with anyone and talk about any subject. But I'm not a know-it-all either, there's so many I don't know about and I love to learn new things. Even when I know the subject, I will still ask to learn more of that subject from that point of view of the other person.
Currently as a hobby, since my injury, I've been working on getting a game made using RPG Maker. I'm not an artist nor do I know how to program, but that engine makes it simple to do things. Although I'm looking for an artist and someone who can do Javascript. I'm thinking of going to the Philippines and hire a few of them there, it's a lot cheaper and I can feature some talents from outside the country.
Well, that's me.
My name is Justin, I first got into Star Control in 1994, a senior at my high school had a copy and we would install it and run it on the only 486 PC capable of running it. My first experience was the Super Melee as I never had time during lunch to play the main game. Then on my 16th birthday I finally got my own PC and was able to enjoy Star Control at its fullest. It was the first great PC game I ever played and is still my favorite all these years later.
I remember waiting with such zeal outside the store for Star Control 3 to be released and despite the obvious let downs I still tried my best to enjoy it
Fast forward many years I am now 37, and still find myself a kid at heart when I boot up some of these classics like Star Control X-com and FFVI.
I have mentioned in another post already, that I am just so excited to be talking about and sharing Star Control stories in 2015, and that good or bad there is something new on the horizon. A game like Star Control helped shape my childhood and show me just how good a game can be.
I played all 3 Star Controls when they first came out. I am 47 years old and have played computer games since their earliest days and I have always considered Star Control II to be the absolute best computer game ever made. But then, I am a sucker for top-down space combat games. Before computer games existed I had already been a board game junkie and was a member of the Star Fleet Battles staff in a previous century, so top-down space combat is my favorite type of game. There hasn't been a good one since Subspace (I was Disco Duck... "Quack" and Subspace is almost 20 years old so I am very excited to hear about a new Star Control game.
I was an aspiring game designer for many years and worked at both Task Force Games (publisher of SFB) and as designer on a THQ/GameFX game called "Sinistar: Unleashed". I was actually what I would call a "rescue designer" on Sinistar, I was only involved for the last 4 months. One of the programmers put it best when he said "we gave him a shoebox full of unrelated parts and he made us a game in 4 months". So it was a very different experience from being an actual lead designer. I was also one of the very first "modders" and, with my brother, created the IKNFL Unofficial Stat Patch for Seirra's Front Page Sports Football in 1994 which most people who played online used and was eventually included on the CD for the 1998 version of the game and may have been the first player created material ever included with a published game. Hey, my accomplishments are minor, you gotta let me brag about my favorite one... which is the basis for the ratings used in pretty much all sports games to this day. Before IKNFL player ratings in sports games were wildly random numbers. I haven't worked on games since the end of 1999, I just play them now.
Today I am semi-retired and babysit a TSA monitored parts warehouse on the weekends.
Hi everybody.
My name is Michael.
I've been fan of star control from the very beginning. Actually, my brother who is not a member here (Kevin), is a diehard as well. He's anticipating this game as much as me.
We both loved the first 2 star control games.
But you will know me as the guy who wants this new reboot on a gaming platform console. Any console...
I bought star control 3 and was disappointed to say the least. Not because Paul and Fred had no part of it, but because I hate PC gaming. Never enjoyed SC3.
I truly think I would have liked it more, had it been available for console.
Anyways, I got out of gaming for a long time working and taking care of the wife. Plus the games of today as my brother and I like to call them " shoot'em up games" slap a sticker on it and send it out. Has left a bad taste for both of us on the gaming industry.
No imagination or creativity.
We both have waited patiently for star control to come back to no avail. Then I hear the news...
So here I am waiting the greatest game ever made to come back.
btw...I work on cars for a living
auto body shop
I have a PS2
a Wii
a Nintendo DS
Want to know how often I play games now...never
So I bought a 3do and star control 2 for my brothers birthday a couple years ago. (was hard to get btw) as they are becoming scarce.
So myself, my brother and 2 other buddies have been playing this great old vintage classic like crazy lately.
All 4 of us want this game now.
But ONLY!
if its on a console.
Anyways, I'm very excited and can't wait for release. Also looking forward to chatting with all of you and discussing the game with you when it comes out.
For now, we just have to be patient and share some ideas.
btw, Frog is a cool dude.
He helps with questions and interacts with us.
so props to him and thank you Frog.

I played SC2 on 3DO back in Russia. As I remember I was sitting there with English-Russian dictionary trying to catch all the phrases and sentences to figure out where to go next. I was making notes on paper and mapped out quasispace-hyperspace travel map by hand too. I've never finished the game back then, 'cause I couldn't figure out what to do or where to go at around 80% into the game. Kohr-Ah deathmarch killed the reminder of fun and the game was put on shelf. I beat the game here in US a few years later. Then I played Ur-Quan Masters HD couple of months ago under pressure of nostalgia.
Getting into Founder's program would be ecstatic!!
I have all 3 of the SC games i just couldn't part with them, i played them up to win XP, and now that they are rebooting the old games with new life i hope to be a part of the molding of the new game, I know the old games are Action.adventure i just hope they make it more RTS than the action adventure. Im sure they with be able to build on it SD has a good opportunity to reboot this Franchise and give it new life.
I look forward to being a intricate part of this reboot
skype id is cpl
I played all the games in the series at release, like many of you guys. I am in my 40s now and a big collector of retro systems and games (along with the new stuff). I have worked as an engineer, both software and hardware, in consumer electronics and now as a sector lead for the last 20 years. I am pretty much known as Mihos across all my accounts over the years. My favorite of the series is 2 on the 3DO, and it is still in the drive as we speak.
My favorite parts of the series by far is the exploration and diplomacy... I could spend a month chasing down Rainbow worlds based on rumors. Second would be the ship and fleet building
My least favorite was the combat. I really never got good at it, and basically just overbuilt my fleet to deal with the encounters. Looking forward to see how this comes out.
Looking forward to the next year!
Hello all. My name is Sam.
I played Star Control 2 pretty early on. I don't remember how I got a hold of the game, but it was one of the first actually "good" games I played on PC. I enjoyed pretty much all aspects of the game and spent hours and hours exploring and battling it out with aliens. After SC2 I went back and got my hands on SC1 and enjoyed it for what it was, but really, after SC2, there's not much of a point to SC1. Good in its own way, but I think the core experiences that people are looking for in a SC game are huge universe, lots to explore, ships to build and fight, and funny aliens competing together in an interesting story. SC1 just doesn't have as much of that as SC2.
I remember waiting patiently for SC3 to arrive and when it did I purchased it immediately. I remember liking it well enough, but realizing it just wasn't quite as memorable or as fun as SC2.
I would go back and play SC2 every once in a while (much aided by the work by the UQM team) and am always left impressed by the atmosphere and character of the game. Everything from the art, music, dialog, and pacing work together to make it an enjoyable universe to live in for the 40+ hours you'll spend there.
Beyond that, my gaming preferences lean toward RPG, action, and Rogue-likes. I spent the last 10 years or so playing Eve Online, so that game is deep within my gaming soul.
I can't wait to see what the team does with this project and am more than happy to help as I can.
Hello all, my name is Josh, I am a 15 year old high-school student at Raisbeck Aviation High School (and I'm mighty proud of that) currently residing in Seattle, Washington of the United States of America. Now I know what you're probably asking "Josh, how can a 15 year old be into Star Control II???" Well, that is an interesting story, but the long-short of it is basically I grew up with a computer from the '90s and while my friends were playing their mainstream Call of Duty's and their Grand Theft Auto's, I was playing X-Com: UFO Defense, X-Com: Apocalypse, The Ur-Quan Masters (Star Control II optimized for Windows) and Zork I, II and III. Needless to say I became very attached to all of these games (playing Star Control II originally when I was six years old!) to the extent where I have now started and attempted to play through twelve separate Star Control II games, each with their own end goal and playstyle. So I am stuck in the weird crowd where I am too young to be "cool" with those interested in the games I play, and don't fit in with my own age group because I don't like Call of Duty. So yeah, that's my life story in a nutshell, hope you enjoyed and I hope that I can bare witness to the growth of the Star Control community and the revival of this beloved franchise.
...
It's not Starflight. Just like you can call any RPG game "a D&D game", all these types of games are "SFB games", it's just that Star Fleet Battles never got the credit for all the games in inspired like D&D did. All of these types of games owe their original heritage to SFB.
http://www.starfleetgames.com/
That is debatable, were some games inspired by SFB? Sure, but saying that all Space RPGs are inspired by SFB is a bit of an exaggeration. Technically we should say that SFB was actually a "Space Wars" game. Just food for through.
Also, fun fact: Mass Effect's Reapers were actually inspired directly from Star Control's Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah.
I didn't say all space RPGs. I said you could call these types of games "SFB games" in the same way people call RPGs "D&D games". There is a lot more SFB in the games you've played than you probably realize. There is a lot of SFB in star control. "Hellbore cannons", the Airlou is an Andromedan, the Ilwarthi is a Romulan Falcon Mauler, the Chenjsu has an SFB designed photon torpedo. Master of Orion is an unlicensed SFU game. Most of the really good space ship computer games contain overt references to SFB that are only noticed by SFB players. Most games of this genre ultimately own their heritage to the Star Fleet Universe in the same way that most RPGs ultimately owe their heritage to D&D.
SFB was actually very influential on TNG. Calling Romulan ships "warbirds" comes from SFB. SFB was used to basically cooreograph movements of ships that were taking place to ensure they made basic sense and some SFB terms like "emergency deceleration" made it into the show due to this. There are two episodes of TNG based on SFB scenarios. The one where Captain Maxwell crosses the Cardassian border and pre-emptively attacks them is one of the most famous historical SFB scenarios called "The Surprise Reversed" and the episode "Peak Performance", where Riker commands the Hathaway against the Enterprise is a wargame is an SFB scenario called "Practice, Practice, and then what?". Peak Performance is actually a full blown tribute to SFB from beginning to end with many referances to SFB and a character based on the designer of SFB (...with some pretty dead-on casting, whoever wrote the episdode knew Steve Cole).
But SFB is probably the second most influential game after D&D, it's just like Rodney Dangerfield and never got no respect
I can't resist pointing out that a single flaw in the design of Master of Orion has echoed throughout that genre to this day. The whole reason there is no strategy in space strategy war games is because the people who made Master of Orion missed the point of the command rating system. And to this day every one of those games has one massive fleet of death marching across the map as a result. The original system was specifically created to prevent that and make it a thoughtful strategy game.
Hello,
I'm happy to see so many SCI and SCII fans here (safe to assume there are no fans of SCIII? So let's delete that from history).
I too played SC2 around 90's back in highschool and it certainly had the right mix of adventure, battles, story, characters, and mystery! It was my favorite game and I've lost count on how many times I have replayed it.
It was fun getting to know the lore, exploring the universe to find its innermost secrets and then wanting more.
I still want to know what exactly all those stars aligned pointing at a particular corner of the galaxy meant and I hope we get a glimpse of that in the NEW SCIII.
Regards,
Isaac.
My name is Adrian. I'm the lead for Stardock's Metaverse team. For those that don't know: Metaverse is our term for ranking, stats, and leaderboard info for our games (single and multiplayer).
I was a very early fan of Paul Reiche III having played Mail Order Monsters on my Commodore 64 as a kid.
I played the original Star Control and later StarCon2 while in high school. My friends and I played Super Melee regularly. I also played StarCon3 in one 12 hour sitting when it first came out... and haven't played it since! Since then I've replayed StarCon2 a few times over the years. It stands as one of my favorite games of all time.
I'm really excited to see Star Control brought back to life and to contribute in my small way to its triumphant return!
My name is Brent, I have been a fan ever since my brother bought Star Control 1 from Babbage' s and we used to play on a CGA monitor against each other. I still like to pull out Star Control 2 at least every couple of years and replay the campaign. I have only a few games on that pedestal like Star Control, XCOM, Planet's Edge, or Wing Commander. SC 2 was the game that got most of my friends hooked on PC gaming.
I look forward to the reboot, I always wanted to see the story of the Humans initial contact, their subsequent uplifting, and being thrown into a massive war. I look forward to what's in store. I am glad to have something new to unwrap then rehashing the old.
I've enjoyed most of Stardock's games and am excited to see how you will tell the story. The story in GalCiv was excellent and has me looking forward to the one in this game. Please keep the alternate mission options even if you fail missions that so many games just don't get. In most games you can only win every time or you lose the whole game. I loved that the story continued even if you failed a mission or two.
Greetings and various apropos felicitations!
My name is Nicholas Chevallier and I've been a fan of Starcontrol since I ruined my older brothers game of it by coming home from school and jumping on to play it without making sure he'd saved (He was out of the house.) Thankfully he was understanding and we had a great time exploring the amazing game together. Been a massive fan since, replaying it at some points once a year and being an active member for the longest time in the Starconrpg website, exploring alternate histories, possible continuations and short-lived but awesome GURPS starcontrol game.
Was not so much a fan of the first game which I got to play a few years after, but am thankfull it started what starcontrol would become and I can see _degrees_ of merit in the third, there was untapped potential there, some of the aliens were interesting and alien others... Less so, it could have been so much more than it was, felt largely the mechanics and plot needed... Finished and re-written respectively. I'm also a massive fan of a race created for D&D by Paul Reiche III: The Thri-kreen which kind of underlines what I loved about starcontrol 2 so much, alien aliens with understandable motives but with a different outlook on life.
Super excited I've scraped together the cash to join people here (full time carer for sick family, cash is a little tight!) if a little surprised that my long rambling excitement in the founder invite was accepted and would be keen to join any skype groups going!
Hello.
My name is Nigel Hedges.
Like most here, I have played Star Control since the first one.
It inspired a love of space opera and science fiction which has continued to date.
Computer Gaming has changed, and I hope that the new game can tap into the spirit of the originals but at the same time extend into the rich gaming experience, story telling, lore, action and adventure senses that many great games do today.
I think this is a fantastic opportunity to effectively "reboot" a fantastic game with a strong following, and I can't wait to be involved.
Nigel
Hi, my name is Jacques, I played SC I, II and II in the 1990's and still play II and III on occasion. I use the SC2 remake "Ur Quan Masters" and I'm still able to play SC III using the Dos Box emulator. In the late 1980's early 1990's I also played "Trade Wars" on BBS which was a text-based game where you would explore sectors with a ship, trade with star bases and use the acquired credits to improve your ship's armements or upgrading your ship. I though something like this would be a nice add-on to Star Control. (The mining in SC2 was a way to get RU but trading with other species would be another nice way to do that). Two of my other favorite games were "High Seas Trader" and Microprose Pirates which also included trading goods. Perhaps having races of space refugees who live only on ships looking for a replacement world that one could trade with. The player ship's log could record if a suitable world was found.Perhaps an option to board a captured ship and fight it out with the captain ? It was a nice option in Pirates to be able to capture ennemy ships by boarding them. Ships like the VUX, Syreen, and Orz would seem like good options to capture ships instead of just blowing them up. If the ennemy captan wants the nice ship you have he might want to duel you for it offering his own ship(s) if he loses.I though it would be cool to have an option in the reboot to interact with the time period where the Dnyarri took over the galaxie and to help out the Thaalo and Maelnum save alien species that are though extinct in SC2 by hiding them in a pocket universe where their colonies could help out in the effort. The effort could also include species which were wiped out by the Ur Quan in SC2. Perhaps to form a new covert alliance ?Looking forward to seeing the new Star Control come out.
I think I will also introduce myself, even though looking through the introductions, I feel like I don't deserve to be here (very Finnish trait). My name is Janne. I have been waiting for star control 2 sequel for almost 20 years now and even though toys for bob are not involved, luckily I have learned to trust and respect Stardock! I see star control a very challenging game especially in today's game development. It is a almost unique genre that has been explored very little. So there are a lot of big mistakes to be made, but also great surprises that we will surely still see. So much potential and possibilities. Please surprise me .I have even planned for star control game before. As I have been a game developer for a long time. The scale of it just seemed too challenging. So I decided to just wait for almost 20 years for someone to take it up again . I am also super happy to see others excited about the game. Since even though the SC2 is easily in TOP 5 of my all time games and the only game I have "funded", still most gamers - even longtime and hardcore gamers - that I know of, don't even know star control 2. I am trying to civilize them.Random facts:- I suck at adventure games and I always end up reading walkthroughs when playing star control 2. So it says especially much, that despite it, I still love the game.- My TOP 5 games of all time, include two games with the abbreviation SC.- I hated star control 3. Never played it very far. And tried to for few times. - As youngster I also enjoyed the game with my brother a lot and succeeded him in it (as a younger brother). Since ultimately I became the irresponsible gamer from the two of us. Somebody has to be the reliable in the family so I could afford to take the other route of gaming and entrepreneurship .
My name is Craig. I've played PC games since I was six, and they were all on 5.25" floppy disk. I loved SC2 from the moment I got it. The melee with my best friend was great. We pushed so many buttons on the keyboard with two player that the keyboard stopped working, making one of us lose the ability to turn during melee...I loved that! Mwahaha!
My favorite part of SC2 though was the giant fold-out map! I kept that map at my desk and referred to it all the time while playing. I loved picking a constellation on the paper map, and then trying to fly there in the game. Planet landings, the mystery of the plot, and the great loneliness of space are among my favorite aspects of SC2. The galaxy is huge, friends are few and far between, and that game conveyed it better than any other I've played.
I would love to learn more about the Precursors during the course of helping with SC(4?)s alpha and founder's program. I was honored to become a founder today! I want to help grow the story and to keep the majesty and loneliness of space present in this new game, if I can.
I look forward to the next few years with you all! Nice to meet the Stardock staff too! You guys make great games! (Demigod, GalCiv1, 2, 3)
-Craig
P.S. Love the Broodhome, Podship, and the Dreadnought! Big ships for me, please!
My name is Mikko, but I pretty much go by 'Kissamies' in every gaming community and many other kinds of communities as well. I first heard about Star Control from a PC playing friend on early 90s, possibly around 1992. It didn't find its way to my Amiga through the pirate network, which was friends copying the floppies to each other back then, and I didn't come across it in the stores either. In late 1994 I had switched to PC and came across Star Control 1 and 2 CD compendium on a store, and remembering this friend's recommendation, I bought it. Sadly, I accidentally sat on the CD at some point, but still have the box and the manuals.
Star Control 2 made an impression to me. I didn't beat the game right on the bat, I wasn't so determined to finish games back then, but came back with instructions some time later and then finished it. Really a memorable experience. I come back to it fairly regularly. SC2 will always be in my top 10. Some of the most memorable game music too. It always shocks me when I find out relatively few people have heard about it. It should be the game everyone remembers! They are seriously missing out. SC1 is worth a mention as well.
I bought SC3 as soon as it came out. I don't hate it like many people too, but it's severely lacking and not worth the name "Star Control". Would have been a halfway decent, if forgettable game with some other name. At least it didn't take much effort to finish.
My favorite genre varies a bit, but most of the time it is probably turn based 4x startegy games. This is where I know Stardock from. So far I have found their games mostly decent, but not that impressive. However, I love the way they treat their customers. I bought Elemental thinking it was going to be the next Master of Magic. It was a dissapointment. I shrugged and moved on. However, they recognised that that it was a failure and gave me Fallen Enchantress for free. I find that game pretty meh too, but I appeciate the gesture. GalCivs are decent, but there is other space 4x games I like more. I also played SoaSE demo and it just reinforced my conclusion that RTS is for other people.
In conclusion, I'm exited to be on this ride. I love Star Control and think highly enough of the company to support their effort in this. They are the good guys. With my humbe advice they have a chance to create something approaching the SC2 greatness
