Greetings! There's been a lot of news recently on Star Control and we want to make sure we have answers to some of the most common questions.
What is Star Control?
Star Control is a sci-fi action/adventure game set in the future where humans and aliens are trying their best to get by in this crazy old galaxy.
What is Star Control: Origins?
Star Control: Origins is the first game in the new Star Control series.
Is Star Control: Origins related to the classic DOS Star Control games?
Yes. While Star Control: Origins takes place in a different universe (allowing us to start fresh) the classic DOS games are still part of the Star Control franchise.
I loved the classic Star Control games! Will the new Star Control have humor, music and the light hearted fun mixed with dark interludes that we saw in Star Control 2?
That's the plan.
When will the new Star Control be out?
We are shooting for mid 2018 but the short answer is: When it's done.
Will the new Star Control have the aliens from the DOS Star Control games?
Star Control: Origins takes place in 2088. While it isn't a prequel, as it takes place in a different universe, it does take place decades before the events that occurred in the DOS games.
What is the universe of Star Control: Origins?
It starts out in the year 2086. Our part of the galaxy has been pretty busy for a long time without noticing us. However, our radio signals have been recently detected by the ancient Scryve Empire who see our rapid technological rise as a threat and are seeking us out to wipe us out. You are the Captain of Earth's first and only FTL ship and have been tasked with finding a way to save us before the Scryve learn Earth's exact location. No pressure.
What is the Star Control: Multiverse?
To ensure that we always have new adventures for players to go on, Star Control: Origins introduces players to multiuniverse gates known as "Origins". While the new Prime universe has its own lore and history and characters, the Origins will allow players to visit other universes as well. This allows us to license popular Sci-Fi universes and allow players to travel and visit them.
What would be the long-term dream of Star Control: Origins?
We want to bring back the open universe space adventure/exploration genre with this. That's why so much of our development has been focused on crafting tools to let players create and share their own adventures.
Star Control: Origins has its own lore, aliens and story explore. But we could imagine players being able to eventually get many other stories from any and every sci-fi universe that wants a story told in the Star Control style. Imagine a Babylon5 Star Control or a Firefly Star Control.
Any update on a possible release schedule? (I waited one year, as asked for)
Mac or iPad support? Common guys. I know you have a history with Windows, but you can't just exclude such a large user base after so much time has passed. Many of us computer users no longer use Windows or even have a traditional computer.
I swear to god if you stick to Windows exclusive I'm going to be VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!
/Zorg.
Right now, the plan is PC, Mac and probably Linux support.
We're still a long ways off though.
Most of our developers are split between Sorcerer King, Galactic Civilizations III, <unannounced game RTS> and <unannounced fantasy game>.
We are building the various tools though that we're going to need. Galaxy editor, Quest editor, etc.
This saddens me. But I guess leaving Frungy alone was for the best.
Wait... does this mean no Earthlings in the new game?

The Earthlings are still there. Just no guarantees on who else might.
Frogboy, thank you for the update.
However, just because you're rebooting the franchise, doesn't mean that certain things can't be common to both continuity, right? I mean, some things just don't change: a nuclear missile is a nuclear missile, a spork is a spork, a soccer ball is a soccer ball. It doesn't matter which game you're playing, some things just "are". So...why not make mention of Frungy in some background item?
Also...concept art. Please & soon.
Awesome! I'll preorder the Mac port with a side of native development.
Hey thanks for replying Frogboy.
I do have another question: how further along is development particularly when it comes to the story? Are the devs still outlining it or has it been completed 100%?
Thanks.
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!
I just heard about this now. I don't know how the news of a new Star Control game slipped by me for over a year, but as you might be able to tell I'm SOMEWHAT EXCITED AT THE PROSPECT.
And then my next thought was: "Oh, crap, the chances or Linux support are not super-high". And that made me depressed for a few minutes, because I'm one of those people who uses Linux exclusively. But we have SteamOS these days, so perhaps? maybe? Let's go ask the question and see if I can use my powers of persuasion...
Then I find:
Squee! Heart rate increases. Depression vanishes. Feelings of love well up inside me. A tear of joy cascades down my cheek. I feel a slight rumbling in my nether-regions. I start think about dieting and quitting cigarettes and coffee to increase my life expectancy so that I'm more likely to be able to A ) buy it and B ) finish it. I start saving so that I can buy a copy for every single one of my friends, along with the super-expensive-deluxe edition which comes with the full-size, fully functional Arilou Skiff. I look up the current state of suspended animation technology in the hope of avoiding the horribleness of waiting for release day - it's been about half an hour now and the wait is already painful. And I thought it was bad waiting for Game Of Thrones Season 5.
This just might be the best news I have ever heard. Steam for Linux pales in comparison, as does the remastered version of Grim Fandango I bought recently. The berlin wall coming down seems insignificant. Armstrong walking on the moon... is still pretty damn cool though. Peace on earth or a new starcon game would be a tough choice.
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG.
Will Paul and Fred be involved?Toys for Bob was ultimately acquired by Activision. Paul and Fred are still in charge of Toys for Bob but their relationship with Activision prevents them from actively participating on a new Star Control franchise. Understandably, neither they or us would feel comfortable with a third party making changes to the Ur-Quan story arc.
Okay, I understand not using their direct storylines but... Not including the established races? I'm sorry, but without the Yehat, Spathi, et cetera... It's not Star Control. It's Generic Sci-Fi Action-Adventure 5213-B. The races and backstory is what makes Star Control... Star Control.
It's like making a Star Trek game but not using ANY of the established races, ships, or storyline.
Is there no way Paul and Fred can be any sort of unofficial advisers? Maybe let you hire their kids as proxies? >.>
Oh, and on the subject of the website, is there any ETA on it getting a revamp? You mentioned it being a hub for the lore and everything, including of Fred and Paul's canon timeline. Yet it hasn't been touched since it was put up, which is a shame.
Frogboy,
Any chance of an update on if or when a founders edition / alpha is coming our way??
Updated.
EDIT:
re-posted to "VV" as its more relevant there. sorry for the double post!

@frogboy
Just an FYI, gmail is automatically reporting your "The Wait is Over - Star Control Founder's Program has Begun" email as spam.saying: "Be careful with this message. Many people marked similar messages as spam." Its automatically being thrown in there
So your emails might not be reaching your full audience. Unless the email its from brad_wardell@stardock.com is in fact not yours...?
I recently sent in a survey response to see if I qualify as nerdy enough to be a founder. What is the avg wait time to see if I got in? Really excited! Been playing Starcon 2 (Ur-quan masters port) since I was nine.
Mixed feelings about the founders program. I got in! But it costs 100$ to access anything! I would be willing to pay some money to get in true, but 100$? That is crazy! Why are you charging so much money?
I agree with TheUr-quanMaster - $99 does seem like a lot for no physical product - it's more than many/most AAA titles. After currency conversion it works out to over AU$135! I've also been accepted for the founders program but the price is high, more than I've ever paid for a game. It seems like that price should include a limited edition boxed copy. I can appreciate that it includes all future DLC and expansions and comes with a bunch of nice perks (naming a planet sounds like fun), but I have some questions I'd like to ask to help me as I consider the price:
1. Will there be a Linux build from the very beginning? (I only use Linux, if there's no Linux build it's not worth very much to me)
2. Can you give me an idea of the system requirements? I can appreciate that the requirements may change during the development process, but if you could give me some idea what you're aiming for that would be helpful (my machine is not top-end, if you'd like more specific info I can elaborate and you can give me a "will run/won't run" answer)
3. Some more concrete game information would be nice, e.g will or won't there be original starcon races? Will the story follow from SC2? SC3? Will SC3 be ignored and considered non-canon? I think that this has been mostly answered (no starcon races, separate canonicity to the main SC series?) but I'd like confirmation on that.
4. Is this going to be on steam, some other platform, none, or all?
Thanks for your time!
Most likely no, Stardock's response to requests of Linux versions of their games is they'll be made after Vulkan is released.
It will require 64-bit and DirectX 11. Since it uses the Nitrous engine the same as Ashes of the Singularity you might want to look at the system requirements for that one for a general idea. Granted I don't think Star Control will have as high requirements as that one.
It's a reboot, no old aliens, new story.
So far we know it will be on Steam and GOG. However I don't know exactly how it will work, like will they just ask you for what platform do you want the key for.
For more information about the game I suggest you read the October and November updates.
Thanks for the response.
1. Is a deal-breaker for me. No Linux version == me not handing over cash, simple as that. I got burned by epic on my preorder of UT3 (that was the last time I preordered a game), so saying "Linux one day" doesn't fill me with confidence.
2. DirectX 11. How quaint. Not a good way to go about writing something portable.
3. Yeah, that's what i thought - makes it not really Star Control and drops the value for me down to around the $20 range at most (assuming no dealbreakers, a-la #1).
4. Thanks.
Remember AntiSol, Thire is always the wine programs loader wich can run just about any windows program, with direct x compatablity. So even if they dont support it on lunix, you can always wip out your trusty Wine EXE runner.

I Love the Idea of new Star Control games! anything new to this franchise gets my mind racing! But will we ever see a remake of a previous game in the franchise? I love Star Control 2 and think it would be wonderful to see the game remastered, you know a return to that galaxy that has kept so many of us fans for so long, and maybe a chance to show new fans better where it came from.
There's The Ur-Quan Masters and I agree that there's not a lot to improve about it while still keeping the original game underneath.
You might be interested in The Ur-Quan Masters HD
I am late to the party. Will Star Control be a 64 bit game and will it have support for DX12?
