Hi again.
It was probably repeated and is now common knowledge, but I just recently started playing rebellion and I can't believe what I see.
And what I see is: Rankulas, the new Vasari cap, is an utter, complete, undeniable piece of garbage.
Please explain to me what I'm doing wrong cause I just can't get it. It's just a nerfed down Skirantra for all I can see!
Combat nanite swarm - creates a corvette-ish little piece of shit that does about as much damage as a scout. Even in huge numbers all these pieces of junk can really do is soak damage (if someone is stupid enough to shoot them), cause their DPS is just bleh. In potential DPS, this ability loses hard to scramble bombers in 95% of real game situations.
Support nanite swarm - this one is a laugh. You look at it and think "hmm... a free Overseer! Nice!". And then you look at the goddamn skirantra and see that this ability loses hard to repair cloud. The tradeoff looks like this:+ stackable if your first cloud survives a minute (yeah right)+ gives armor+/- cheaper in AM for all the potential heal it can do to single target. It will NEVER get ANYWHERE close to repair cloud when there are more targets for healing.---- the support nanites are weak and can easily get killed before they fire the second heal; in this case their healing potential becomes a complete laugh, considering a whopping 60 second cooldown on the ability---- YOU LOSE THE ONLY RELIABLE AOE HEAL IN THE VASARI ARSENAL (except Nano Remit, but that's a whole different story for several reasons)
Assault swarm - ok, ok, so it has that tiny whiney itsy bitsy debuff. Great. It still loses hard to scramble bombers as far as I'm concerned. If you want to kill a starbase, get Subverters, an Egg and anything that has DPS. Done. You dont need this crap that will die to the SB's AOE in a split second.
Greater nanite swarm - LOOOOOOOOOL. Ok ok so you sacrifice all your swarms, all your healbots, all your anti-structure ticklers/debuffers and all your peashooting flies, to create one piece of junk that's about as durable as a level 1 capital ship and deals about as much damage as a heavy cruiser. WTF? However I look at this one, it loses hard to replicate forces.
The ONLY thing that I can see this ship REALLY doing better than Skirantra is scouting - the nanites can actually phase jump and scout for you without a need for a scout. Does that, however, justify picking this situational piece of general crap over the used-to-be-OP Skirantra, that you just can't play late game without?
What is it that am I missing? Cause I'm surely missing something...
Seleuceia i take it you dont play online much
"mass produce capital ships'...lawl
Here we ago again, another one of those trolls, "Sel, you don't play online much do you?"...unlike some players, I don't have to hide by using different ICO and forum names...
At least Sinkillr had the balls to be open with who he was on ICO as he complained about my, shall we say, lack of participation on ICO...that, and he's actually skilled...
I could make an argument but, well, why bother...I'll defer to Grimm and his MP guide...

"Late game, vasari starbases are less of a big deal, as long as there is no fleet protecting them. A titan with a bunch of caps and 30+ heavy cruisers obliterate Vasari starbases."
"In the lategame, strikecraft only work if they surprise the enemy, and a mass heavy cruisers or a titan + cap ship fleet might be a better approach..."
"To deal with a fully upgraded [advent] starbase, you either need a massive amount of bombers, or a cap ship fleet, to drain antimatter..."
I wonder why Grimm would so casually refer to building cap ship fleets as possible strategies if it was....well, a terrible thing to do?
I like seeing people experiment more with different caps ships and building more than 1. The timing is tricky sometimes though. I feel like in suicide spot with good feed is actually a good place to build more than 1 as you'll have repair right on hand and lots of XP fodder coming through the door. I saw Hiroge do that recently (and he built a Rankulas of all things - I thought of this thread in that game lol). Late game is also another time when people start to add cap ships - sometimes to help deal with Titans. Vasari, since they don't rely on spamming frigates as much, will often grab a second cap ship. In general, early game is risky as large swarms of corvettes or light frigates are usually dominating.
Errr...I mean...Seleucia...do you even know how2ICO bro?!?!
Im uncrustable online and here
Maybe im hiding as myself, its so obvious its unbelievable
There was a time however when the kol was a viable capital ship.
The time of the carrier caps. Esp the skirantra.
2,3 sometimes even 4 carrier cap starts. Bomber swarms were prevalent and difficult to counter. If you could get a kol to level 5 it was very usefull. However even then, the dunov was better. EMP + mappulse = dead sc and no AM or shields for the skirantras...not to mention sheild restore keeping each other alive. The only thing the kol could do was kill SC, nothing else. Whereas the dunov was very versatile, albeit requiring a good bit of micro.
But that time has passed.
I have easily played more than 1000 online competitive games of sins, going back to the beginning of the game. More than half probably 5v5s, almost all 3v3, 4v4 or 5v5. In all that time i have never seen capital ships massed produced in a competitive game. Even during the carrier cap era you would rarely see more than 5 capital ships per player, and a quick LRM rush would usually wipe clean a less than skilled player attempting a 3 carrier cap start.
Grimms guide speaks of late game bomber swarms, well i can tell you those used to be a problem. As were LRM masses. The corvette has changed everything, couple that with the LF buffs. And gone are both LRM masses and bomber swarms. Replaced with even larger masses of LF and/or corvette.
This makes the Marza one of the most powerfull late game units there is. Level 2 MB will wipe hundreds of LFs/corvettes in seconds. Couple that marza with an akkan and now its unkillable. The marza is also superb at clearing nuetral gravwells for colonizing, one of the best. Also is the best at bombing enemy planets.
The kol is completely useless cap, its good at killing large amounts of SC late game, problem is there isnt much of that anymore.
Early LF battles between equally skilled players will often come down to the capital ship. I have a marza you have a kol, i win. It is literally that simple.
Isn't that the thing where you race to MD as quickly as possible?
I have seen Auqia play with an emormous amount of capital ships once. He was playing Advent.
Are we still in agreement that rankulas is shit or...?
Has it been buffed yet? Just give it some phase cannonz and call it a day...
I see it used more than other capital ships online by exp players.
The kol is the ship i see the least, and i argue it is worse even than the rankulus.
I have never seen a revelation in a skilled game, not even as a troll strategy...I have heard stories of skilled people trolling with them, but I have never seen it...
I have only seen one person use a rapture in recent memory, and that was Undefeated Turtle (who would lead with it on a regular basis)....of course, he also spammed scouts in Rebellion, so take it as you will...this ship is discussed as a good late game compliment to SC heavy fleets, but in practice I can't recall seeing it in rebellion beyond that one player's use...
Ever since a certain patch (don't remember which one), I have yet to see the Corsev...now to be fair, it was not uncommon to see them in the early days of rebellion, but for the past several months I have never seen that ship built, not even in the early game...
Those are 3 ships that I see less than the Kol, which occasionally I see in the late game...the problem with the kol is not that it is useless, it's just that it is only useful late game and most skilled games don't get to the point where Kol/Halcyon/Kortul spam becomes necessary...
For whatever reason, the Rankulas has been used quite a bit as a starting cap as of late....whether this is just a phase or a legit strategy, I do not know...it still is way behind the egg though in terms of popularity...it can be really good at extremely close range (HWs 1 or 2 jumps), just like the Sova, to the point of OP in that particular setup...but that setup is rare, and beyond that I don't see much use for it...
Have seen alot of Corsevs...
Yes.
I have never seen a revelation in a skilled game
The problem with the Revelation is Guidance. All of its other abilities are fine but none make the Revelation worth it. Having no actual fleet firepower at all and no real bombing potential below level 6 kills the viability of this cap. Guidance needs to do something radically different (e.g buff friendly ship firepower) so that this ship can make a big difference in early game fleet battles.
Guidance - increases chance to hit by 2.5% -> 5% -> 7.5% -> 10% on ships within 3000
Numbers are really just for show but I think something along those lines would be good. Maybe have it add a bombing cooldown too or something small that would help early game bombing.
Tooltip could say something like "Boosts the mental focus of nearby crews, allowing them to engage targets, including planet based structures, more efficiently."
And as for the Rankulas, I rarely take it because it's just not great at anything:
Rather than increasing the chance to hit targets as a replacement for the Guidance ability on the Revelation class battlecruiser, I'd propose an increased rate of fire as a positive AoE fleet buff. I believe I have seen that idea somewhere before, and I know many people were greatly in favor of such a revamp.
I was under the impression chance to hit and fire rate essentially resulted in the same thing (incresead damge from the chance to hit and increased damage per second from fire rate) within Sins damage system and since the Advent already have the Halcyon I figured something different but the same would be a nice addition.
Regardless of how it's implemented, I think we can all agree an Area of Effect fleet damage buff would be a nice Guidance replacement, especially if it could add some lower lvl bombing buff, which the Advent sorely lack.
If Rankulas was about to be buffed, why not increase his regular weapon DPS instead of touching his abilities? Its the largest capship in the vasari fleet by some margin. Personally i would love to see him turned into "Lucifer" like superdestroyer of Vasari fleet (since Vasari ships in their red and black combo sort of remind me of Shivans) and i would not even mind possible price increase to get there. All the capships in Sins are universally important cause of their abilities, so why not make one, which relies more on its regular firepower, to make things bit more varied?
Unfortunately, that wont work because regular DPS is largely irrelevant to cap ship function. The game is designed so that caps have less DPS per supply than frigates. A really fast cool-down time for its abilities would be useful though.
Well the point of my suggestion is to buff the DPS of Rankulas to the point, where its not cost-ineffective DPS-wise compared to bunch of frigates. I realize this is not how the game is designed, when it comes to capships, but i propose it in spite of that fact - to make Rankulas somewhat unique, not as much reliant on its abilities as the other capships, since its particular abilities are not on par with them - apparently.
Lol wut?
I know right? I mean damn, who would spam bombers or caps or LRFs or anything when they could instead just spam....flak....
I remember Aquia trolling us with some in that pros versus modders game. Secretly I think he actually likes that ship.
That is correct, except increasing chance to hit above 100% has no effect. Chance to hit buffs only matter if accuracy was not already at 100%, like in an asteroid field, or against strikecraft.
My favorite rework for Guidance was to reduce the antimatter cost of all abilities on Advent ships.
That, actually, was the first story that came to mind...and yes, he does actually like that ship, or at least he did when he played a lot...
I'm seeing more and more skilled player use the rankulas in 5s. Even top players such as doci
