Humanity’s allies are bloodied but unbroken in the Galactic Civilizations III timeframe. The former leader of the Republic, Eleys Mue, died at the hands of the Drengin paving the way for the Resistance to take more direct measures that ultimately pushed the Drengin off her world. Succeeding her is Akari Malara of the Iru-Wraith'ir. She is a smart and capable woman willing to deal with the Drengin-dominated galaxy as it is, not the galaxy some of her peace-loving people wish it was. The Altarian Republic is in good -- or at least effective -- hands.
Lead designer Paul Boyer explains Akari Malara thusly:
Like the Terrans, the Altarian Republic has suffered greatly after the wars surrounding the return of the Dread Lords. They may have been wiped out entirely if not for the leader of the Altarian Resistance, Akari Malara. She kept the Altarian people united, giving them the strength to hold firm in the face of the Drengin domination of the galaxy.
While the Altarian Republic now claims to have never truly fallen, their government has been entirely taken over by the key members of the Altarian Resistance. This change can be seen in the way the Altarians now interact with the rest of the galaxy; though still looked upon as the high water mark of benevolence, they are now even less likely to trust outsiders and will often choose to stay aloof from galactic conflict rather than risking further cultural contamination.
Akari Malara herself has become an almost religious figure. The Altarian Resistance sees her as the savior of the Altarian people, and her control over her people is unprecedented in Altarian history. Even her worst critics admire her leadership, though they whisper that she is perhaps a bit too pragmatic.

Update:
Fixed the confusion between Elsys Mue, the leader of the Altarian Republic and Akari Malari, the resistance leader who restored Altaria's independence.
She's in the founder vault. She doesn't look close to me.
Are you referring to the rejected version in the vault?
I actually like that "rejected" version.
Agreed
I like her too. Looks like she has an iron hand to rule the Altarians... No jokes with her
Then she needs modest military-style clothes, moustache, and smoking pipe.
Oh wait is that a different picture, and I was wrong. I think she is better looking than the posted one. Does that make me wrong. I wish she had long hair. You could still give her blue skin. I know this is a little much, but can you give her eyes like Tiffany Amber Thesan. She has the greatest eyes ever. Can you email her and tell her I said that.
Maybe so, but Look what happened in Russia in 1917. Do you think that was a good time for a revolution? The truth is theres never a good time, but the most succesful revolutions occur when there are other crisises going on at the same time. And Russia became the second most powerful Nation on the planet for a good length of time.
Not true. Water has a pale blue colour all of it's own.
Lucky you, one I've seen recently was more of brown hue.
Sometimes its green.
Anyone else noticed how much she looks like an Echani from Star Wars?
Heavy white makeup..... nice pic....
I liked the non blue version better... Could you at least make her look attractive.
Define attractive, because if she showed up at my house I would tap that.
Tiffany Amber Thesan, Alyssa Milano, Christie Ally in her 20's, Angelina Jolene, Dimy Moore, Jennifer Lopez, and Jenifer Love Hewitt.
These would make great templates for the new Altarian leaders.
She appears intimidating. It's a very good look, and not at all like what we're used to for Altarians. This change could make them move up and become my favourite race instead of the Yor. Also, I think she's attractive.
Why, no Anna Wyszkoni in your list? Not a Magdalena Neuner, Gabriela Soukalova, or, I don't know, Kim Heath (one of NRA)? The latter is definitely look like person who could look like new Altarian leader.
Low budget aliens versus intelligent robots. The Altarians have better tech, but they can't afford makeup.
Sorry don't know who they are. Not good with actresses can you tell me what movies they played in, and who they were in the movies, I really think it's hard to beat Thesan in looks. Those eyes are great.
Use the force search, Luke.
First is Polish singer, second is former German Biathlete (I hope you know what biathlon is), third is acting biathlete from Czech, and fourth... She's with NRA, that's enough for me.
Maybe they're focused on not dying and other priorities over makeup? The Drengin are not going to go and say "oh, nice eye shadow, we will not enslave your race now."
This conversation is mind numblingly stupid.
Hey, Tridus, don't be so harsh - as Climie Fisher sang once, love changes everything.
Not much for humor then. Regardless of aliens it is really about gameplay. I kind of like the concept of a low budget alien option anyways.
I don't think the Altarians have much to worry about being enslaved.
For one, they threatened the Drengin and Yor with doomsday weapons, left on Altaria by the Precursors, should they dare to invade. Second, Altaria is uninhabitable for other races for some reason, so an occupation is impossible. Third, the Altarian home-system is being blockaded by the Yor. So, if anything, being wiped out from orbit by the Yor is the far bigger threat.
No, I love humour. It just has to be funny to be called that. A thread going on about which Hollywood personality Aki should look more like is not. It's stupid.
What's with the blue skin? Altarians are supposed to be genetically identical to humans.
