Hello everyone. Sorry if this has been asked before but I have a question for anyone who has played either of these games. Ive been thinking of getting Civ 5 while i wait for Galciv 3. I was originally planing on playing Endless Space while i wait. But the idea of a shiny new game is tempting. Ive never played a Civ game before so it would be a new experience for me. The only things stopping me right now from getting it is the fact that throughout the game eras change (would prefer it being stuck in one time period), and spending the money to get the game and its expansions. Which i have, but it would be quite a bit of money spent.
Now i usually prefer sci fi/fantasy settings for games. In fact when it was seven years ago i was going to buy Civ 3 or 4 but got Galciv 2 instead cause it was a sci fi game. I have always had my sights on the Civ games especially with my love history, but any sci fi game game first in my eyes .
I feel stupid asking this since i hear so many good things about the Civilization games, guess i need a nudge in the right direction or something.

Civ V is a great game, but yes, you will shell out a lot of $ if you want to get the 'Gold Edition' with all of the expansions and DLC. There are quite a few Scenarios included if you want to stick to specific time periods. Another game of similar ilk but with limited time frame would be Europa Universalis IV. I haven't played the full game (demo only) but it is definitely a deep TBS that seems like could provide lots of hours of enjoyment.
You will shell out a bit of money, but the gold edition is 50% off on steam atm, along with the expansion brave new world. It would be around $40 to get them both while on sale. Keep in mind that they might go on sale for more tomorrow or the next day since they are having autumn sales until the 3rd. Gold edition contains the following:
Sid Meier's Civilization® V, Sid Meier’s Civilization® V: Babylon (Nebuchadnezzar II), Civilization V: Cradle of Civilization - Mediterranean, Civilization V: Cradle of Civilization - Asia, Civilization V: Cradle of Civilization - Americas, Civilization V: Cradle of Civilization - Mesopotamia, Double Civilization and Scenario Pack: Spain and Inca , Civilization and Scenario Pack: Polynesia, Civilization and Scenario Pack: Denmark - The Vikings, Civilization V: Explorer’s Map Pack, Civilization V - Civilization and Scenario Pack: Korea, Civilization V - Wonders of the Ancient World Scenario Pack, Sid Meier's Civilization V - Gods and Kings.
I believe the only important thing missing is Brave New World. As mentioned earlier Gold is $25 and BNW is $15.
Civilization V with expansions is the best 4x game of all time, of you ask me. Far superior to Endless Space.
Your call, though
I played Civ5 and loved the new combat but civ4 was still better with everything else. one thing i hate about civ5 is how the mods work and the multiplayer, can't use mods for it and can't have more ai then the preset stuff.
In the end it wasn't historical enough for me ended up playing paradox games.
Wont lie Pandora looks really interesting. Ill have to look into that one. Same with Europa Universalies though it looks extremely intimidating for some reason. Looks like more decisions now . Though i forgot about the steam sale, i guess if Civ is cheap enough (will wait if bigger sale first) i should prob get it then. Thanks for the help everyone!
Civ 5 with both expansions is really great game. Much better then it used to at release. Too bad, that you can not use mods in MP and AI in multiplayer do not contact you like in SP. Those are only two problems for me with it. It is really great. I could never get into endless space. And I have it aswell. It did not feel like a game to me, for some reasons. Could not stick with it. Pandora does looks good. Havent played it, but from the pictures it looks like sci fi, civ 5 with less options. But that is just my guess, did not pay attention to it much. I quiete liked Armada 2526 with expansion, but a lot of people did not. AI is good enough and it is easy and fast to play, yet still deep enough. Thats what I like about it.
....
... there's always x'mas sales
forgot to say.. 75% off for civ on steam..
I own Pandora and really like it.
Also, CIV V is on sale on Amazon - Gold + Brave New World for $20

Go for civ series.
Endgame in Endless Space is really poor, basically stick as many guns as you can onto your ship. If it can fit in 100 guns? Good, now you'll kill every ship you'll ever see. No amount of defenses will beat that. My poor 100k hp dreads The moment I realized that glass ships is king, the quicker I quit Endless Space. Which is kinda funny because I managed to win on my first playthrough, I overwhelmed everyone with my tanky fleets. Then second playthrough I found out about glass ships. pFfft.
20$ for civ5 and everything, grab it! Then grab Communitas mods! Thank me later.
Damn you for telling me about Pandora. It looks pretty cool. *sigh* nother game on my wishlist.
Get XCOm too. I've got those 3 and play them all the time.
I did not like civ5, cannot remember why, something spooked me about it when i first played it.
Civ 4 is brilliant but also disappointing at the same time. They came up with a fantastic unit promotion system in this game but you need to reload allot keep it interesting, otherwise you will lose all your best units in no time. If i had a dollar for every time i lost a unit when the odds were supposedly 99% in its favor..... (But this was fixed in Civ 5)
Civ 3 is what i would call the best of the series, (not withstanding the sleepy AI) but in actual fact, i tend to play civ 2 the most!
When did you play Civ5 last? Just asking because the game was greatly improved from vanilla to GnK and went from good to brilliant with BNW. Also, one trick for enjoying games more, takes practice, but try to not save and reload and work with bad outcomes. You will get a lot better at the game and the additional umph to your choices, will mean that much more. Instead of meh when you complete something you will dance a happy dance when you solve a puzzle. I donno just sayin.
Probably last played it 4 or 5 months ago?
As for trying not to reload, well no one likes wasting time reloading! But 'Time' is the deciding factor for me.... being a family man i do not get so much time for gaming, so if i have invested allot of my valuable time doing something in a game and it goes wrong and sets me back, i really do have to reload (unless i find the new situation interesting enough to be worth the wasted time).
That was about the time Brave New World came out have you tried it? The changes they made really help with the 'End Turn' loop that you go through the last 100 or so turns in 4x games when you are finishing off the last opponents
Haha, after what I just said I jumped into Civ5. My settler unit started in a jungle I move out I burn a whole turn of movement moving two hexes up a mountain...right next to a barb camp. Then I loose my settler unit as well and then my initial warrior trying to free it. How embarassing.
Probably have not tried it, but i never 'finish' games anyway, no time for mopping up.... sometimes in the cases where one of the AI opponents really annoyed me, i just have to utterly destroy them, but still, i won't spend the time to get rid of the rest after that.
Now why this never happen to any big game reviewers the first time they played it?? That would be funny, especially if it was being filmed!
Or better yet, imagine the best world champion player walks into a game tournament, that happens to him and he is out! Don't quit your day job!!!
I have about 1200 hours between Civ 4 and Civ 5. I was laughing when that happened.
I skipped CIV V, after hailing CIV IV as the best game ever. Maybe CIV V is a real game now, but I have bought Pandora and would rather play that
Reading another thread, i was reminded what destroyed Civ5 for me.... the tile unit limit!!!!
I did love the game for a while at first, and the tile unit limit presented some fun and interesting elements to the game,,, 'at first' but then after some time, the tile unit limit started becoming very 'old' and it just went down hill from there until it began to physically drive me insane and i had to give up on the game.
I haven't played Endless Space, but Civ5 gave me many hours of fun I even managed to convince my other half to play with me! I hadn't heard about Pandora, but it looks interesting!!
If you hate that then I don't recommend getting Pandora, it punishes stacking very harshly
