I recently stumbled upon this, someone trying to fulfill an old dream ... it is unlikely to reach its funding goal this time, but those of you who have played BC1 may want to have a look:
http://stbc2.net/http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bridge-commander-2
I loved STBC and what its modding community was able to create, and I truly hope that some time in the future we will have another chance to be in the captain's chair...
I believe someone is already doing this, and for free. Its called Star Trek: Excalibur This is the spiritual successor to BC
I really don't see how OP's kickstarter isn't going to get shut down. There's a huge difference between fan-created and for-profit.
ok sorry i was cougth by the idea of a bcii hopefully excalibur will be the one we have been waiting for!
It appears that they are trying to do this by stealing the work of other peoples:
http://ufplanets.com/showthread.php?39237-Kickstarter-Bridge-Commander-2
Wow, I didn't know that ...That is really sad
I'll remove the link in OP, not sure if I can lock the thread...
Removing the link makes it difficult to track what happens with the project in the future. Posting a link is not just to get people to back it. This is not an ADVERTISEMENT subforum, we should be able to discuss failures as well as successes. I'm putting it back up and forum admins can remove my post if they think it's inappropriate.
Don't back this project! Read this thread.

I find it extremely funny that these people want to create a game without having secured the appropriate rights from the publishers (Although, CBS has said they will not object to the creation of the game, according to the kick-starter). Also, the we'll finish it by 2014 seems rather ambitious for having basically nothing done and only also $15000 is required to hire some help for a year? It seems this was doomed to fail to begin with.
They also, suggest that if you fund them they should be able to get a game developer to fund the rest of the game. The risks section is enough for me to say NO to the game.
Problem with that project besides the plagiarism of other peoples work is the fact that Paramount will basically sue the crap out of them for using the Star Trek IP for Profit without acquiring the appropriate licenses (which cost MUCH more than $15,000).
The reason Excaliber, and most other trek mods can do this is the fact that Excalibur, and other trek mods are NOT for Profit. As long as a disclaimer stating that fact is on a website, and in the read me's Paramount is cool with it, because they consider that free advertising. However once a single dime is made without their approval. Then their army of lawyers will start with the cease and desist letters.. then the multimillion dollar lawsuits.
But that's not necessarily because they're evil sods. If they don't protect their IP they may lose rights to it. As in, if someone makes money off their IP and they do nothing, then that will negatively impact their claim the next time someone makes money from it. THey may even lose their rights altogether, if I remember correctly.
Wouldn't you want to protect your Art?
For one, most of the comments in this are totally invalid and false.Paramount isn't the deciding factor for this game, CBS is, we have CBS's blessings and permission to produce the game.next up is the falsely claimed stealing of other's works, we have permissions from every author who has donated models, music, textures and everything else to the development of Bridge Commander 2, EVEN Major Stress here has! so i have no idea why he is stating otherwise. The fact is, CBS has given us permission to make our game, and we are going to, as for the dated models, those are only placeholder models, we have 2 dedicated modelers who are working on some excellent quality works for the game. Here is a sample of a custom designed shuttlecraft that one of them is working on.
Please if you have any further questions, reply here, email me, check out our website or whatever you want to do, but don't make false claims and don't believe other's false claims until you check it out for yourself.
I will give you the benefit of the doubt about the models. I give blanket permissions to use models made by me. Basically anyone can use my work as long as i receive credit for that work. Many other authors like Rick Knox also use blanket permissions. I see, and recognize names on the credit list. So that seems pretty legit. I have done the same for SoA 2, and i also sought out, and received the blessings of many 3rd party model authors too. I see you guys are awaiting permissions as well. So i jumped to a conclusion too soon, and i apologize.
Forgive me if i do not recall your dev team specifically seeking me out for models. Many do, and i cant keep track of everyone. Then again with blanket permission there is no need to keep track. My models are pretty dated (late 90's early 2000's), and there is much better work out there now.
However i would like to see where CBS/Paramount gave you the blessings. I seriously doubt they would "just do that". When we were modding Starfleet Command they laid the hammer down on all of the modders the first time someone tried to "sell" their models.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1050514166/bridge-commander-2right above the risks and challenges section: For fan consideration and ease of mind, a direct quote from an email conversation between CBS's Legal Department and Myself"CBS Studios will not object to your continued exploitation of your fan-created game"
If you would like, i am sure CBS will not mind answering any questions about this agreement, ask for Mallory Levitt when you call in.
Mind I would love to see this game created, since I like the aspects of bridge commander. I hope for the best in your kick-starter and see it succeed. Don't get me wrong when I say the risks are a little much for me (as I'm also strapped for cash at the moment).
If you say that you have the basic rights to pursue the game, and you have the blessing from and have given credit to all the model creators you are using for the game, then I hope that you get the support necessary to pursue this game.
Though I still think a 2014 launch is a bit ambitious, but I won't say it is impossible. Good-Luck
Well, we hope to have it in the Playable state by 2014.Thanks for your best wishes and i hope you have a great thanksgiving.
Seems like you guys got all the bases covered. I will be interested to see how things turn out too. Good luck with your project
