I just got a hold of an old P4 machine. I don't think the person that gave it away could not understand the excitement I have for this thing. I just hope it's slow enough to run Warcraft 2 not at warp speed. Otherwise, it will be nice to play KOTOR and KOTOR2 without spending a week trying to get the game to run on Windows 7. I've been able to get KOTOR to run most of the time but KOTOR2 is a pain. Also, I tried GalCiv1. I didn't spend too much time with it but I could not get it to run for the life of me. I don't remember if I had 7 last time I played it or Vista. I could always run it on a VM I suppose. I'm kinda considering picking up a CRT...not committed to that idea just yet.
Now I gotta figure out how to explain to my wife that I have more computer "junk" in the apartment. She hates my box of random parts.
If you've only got one box of random parts and one obsolete computer system, she has no room to complain.
What's that honey? Oh, yes, you're right; I really should be cleaning out the basement instead of puttering around on the internet...sigh.
Hehe yeah, I'm glad she didn't know me when I had 8 Apple II's given to me by a school that was cleaning old hardware that they used to have in their computer lab. I actually wish I kept one of those though. I ended up getting rid of them during one of the times I have moved.
I had a walk in closest at the house I used to rent. My room looked like a computer repair store with all the computer parts neatly organized on the shelves.
This is the main reason why I haven't upgraded to win7 64-bit yet. The multitude of older games that I run and enjoy replaying far exceed the current existing applications and games being released.
Even with FE:LH; ever since my computer has started locking up because of steam....I've simply stopped playing. I'm back to playing MoM.
Hopefully one day they fix the problem and I'll gladly come back as I really did enjoy the game...
If i owned that system, i would install win 2k.., DX9, and some older vid card drivers.. (my old system has an ATI card, which seems to run everything i own)
Running win 2k, you should have no problem with anything from 95-2005 outside of some very rare instances. For me the only thing it would not run would be a very old Rouge squadron disk, that will only run under win 95. Awesome game, and first starwars game i ever played that you used a snowspeeder and a grappling hook and took down At-at's! It had it all. ground game fighting troopers, space in ships including a yt-1300, and much more.
Darn..I really need to get a new (old 8 gig HD) to get my old P1 266 back running.. the mother board maxes out about there, besides win 95 only has 2 gig partitions anyway. then install the dreaded win 95! But hey it has 100 megs of ram, and a 16 meg vid card.. So it rocked Rouge squadron!!
so yea, i hear ya on extra boxes.. but isn't it so nice that the monitors for 3 systems take up so much less space these days?
I think XP should be ok. I don't remember too many titles that you couldnt get running with XP. Plus I still have my WinXP disk and I have till April to get the updates. The problem area is the games from Win95 to WinME era, a time when everyone an their mama was creating a new video card such as 3dfx and Diamond. I find many of these games use APIs that no longer exist anymore. Most other games work just fine with DOSbox or another emulator.
yes, that time from 95-2000 was interesting.. Keep your eyes pealed for an old copy of Win 2k pro.. I never even bothered with XP cause 2k was so solid. I ended up getting vista like 2 months before win 7 was announced and launched which bugged me to no end. But in the end vista 64 really has been very solid. to date only one game had any issues, and that was a brand new one, and only because they don't support my sound drivers.
But i will stay on vista for a while, as long as GC3 will run on it, i don't see myself updating any time soon
