How is everyone liking this expansion? The MEC troopers are cool. It's a little disturbing how they perform the transformation. I'll be honest I got a little queezy thinking about it. But then I was back to blowing things up so I got over it.
For grenade/rocket targeting it sometimes helps to rotate the view so that you're not moving the mouse close to the edge of the screen.
There are still some tricky spots on some maps because the sides of the map don't allow you to get a perfect view of where you're trying to throw without putting the mouse too close to the edge where it seems to 'spaz' a bit more.
Another question. X-com unknown keeps crashing during >certain< combat missions. I have no mods. Is there any common reason that this might happen using specific game saves?
I know the final mission gives people trouble. I haven't seen too many updates for Enemy Within so I'll assume it's in the state that it was when I last played it. Based on this I have one recommendation, save often. Try to save after every mission just to make sure. The alien base and final mission are known to be very buggy.
Thx Illauna, good to know its not merely my PC.
If it's just the final mission, while annoying, even in ironman I believe it always allows you to restart that mission no matter what.
If it's something else I don't know, I never had any crash issues.
The crash issues mostly happen when I am using suppression fire and then target the same alien with other fire.
Question: do the items you 'collect' while in the alien hidden base vary depending on which parts you ac actually explore? Would I get more alien tube food of I go and adjacent to each storage tank? etc.
I'm pretty sure you get the same 'loot' no matter what you do, unless you blow it up, then you either don't get it at all or it comes as damaged.
As to the suppression related crash, I have no idea, never experienced it myself.
Ok, I have one last question (I think). When I complete foundry projects to upgrade things like the SCOPE, or adding the capability to take control of enemy robotic units with the scanner, it seems these upgrades don't get implemented, and don't work. My SCOPES still say +10%. And my stunners don't recognize a valid target, even when adjacent to a robotic unit that has only 5% of its hit points left. What am I doing wrong? Appreciate help...
Scope Upgrade gives a +10% critical chance, so after upgrading your scope will give +10 hit and +10crit and not +20hit if that what you thought, the only way to notice extra crit is by observing it during combat and comparing to the observations before the upgrade.
There is no upgrade that grants a capability to capture any robotic enemy, there is only Drone Capture project that will let you reprogram drones to fight for you for the rest of the battle and there is Improved Arc Thrower project that increases the stun chance. It is not possible to capture sectopods, cyberdiscs, mechtoids or seekers.
Thank you. The clarification on the scope is very helpful. And 'reprogramming' drones is done how? By using an 'upgraded via foundry project' arc thrower? Appreciate the help. Really enjoy learning this...
Reprograming drones is called "Drone Capture" if i am not mistaken. But my expert opinion is don't waste your time with it, it just not that useful.
Yeh the scope upgrade is bugged i remember before the expansion it actually mentioned the crit buff. Now its "invisible" but does actually work.
Same goes for Psi armor, it actually increases the speed by 2 and defense by 10 but does not mention it in description.
Also combat stims can be used 2 times although it looks like they are single use item.
I think that's the only "invisible" attributes so far.
Thanks all for help. I think that's it...re questions related to the interface info given...
Final post here. (and thank you for letting me post here, was not exactly on topic... but close). Finished my first playthru. What a ride. Before final assault on temple, I lost only one soldier. Entire party intact and healthy until throne room. Then, all but two are KIA. (sad). Final exchange, my two survivors are at 1/3 HP. Last etherial at 5 or 6 HP. One action left. Chosen mind flays, and kills ethereal. A nail biter, and a very cool ending cut scene. Question: Is it worth it to play above normal difficulty, or Iron man? Or better to get DLC, EW, and enjoy that?
Pain and suffering is fun (yes to higher difficulty and iron man).
EW yes but I would wait final patch should be out sometime this month (and no I'm not talking about that small one that just dropped). Kills lots of annoying bugs.
Patch kills bugs? I thought that was our job?
Will wait for patch and sale. Thank you for tip!
Some people will tell you that the only way to play the game is Classic/Ironman. Or, even Impossible/Ironman.
You can also check out the 2nd Wave options now, some of which change the game play up enough to where you cannot just do the same sat rush mass rocketter nonsense
Though squadsight snipers in archangel armor still seem to rule...
.... a patch was out.. i don't see many bugs listed in the changelog.. no mention of the grappling hook teleport.
OMGERED XCOM EW LONG WAR BETAS!
Oh sorry about the confusion, there will be a big XCom complete patch this month or next month (depends on how their bug hunting goes as some of the reported bugs are hard to squash).
Can i have a link to the patch announcement or notes coz i cant google myself to it.
When they are ready to post them I'll give everyone the heads up. I've been following 2k forums and nexus xcom forums.
I play with 'not created equal' on. And then hire many, many new recruits. My first play thru (I'm near end of second), I suffered because my troops had such low aim skills. Missiles going off at 45 degrees from where I sent them, and wracking my own troops. (no warning!). Ouch. Never want to suffer thru a campaign like that again! Spending all that money on troops at start does set back other things. But the sweetness of having a squad with high aim scores (and will scores) is worth it. Not sure the will matters. First three candidates had wills, 91, 87, 82. Only one was gifted - yes, the 82. LOL. Question about archangel gear. I thought I read that using powered flight does not confer a height advantage. Is this just a way to get line of sight?
Line of sight is all your snipers usually need.
Rockets do not depend on your aim attribute, they are a fixed 90% I believe. Unless you are playing a mod.
I can tell you this much though... you're really not getting everything out of the game playing it the way you are
Of course, anyone should feel free to play however they enjoy playing, that said, XCOM is designed to be played at a level which you find difficult. It's supposed to have many 'That's XCOM baby!' moments where you get squad wiped, or lose your best guy, or lose entire continents due to flubbing a terror mission.
I would strongly recommend moving up to Classic difficulty and turning on Ironman. You will have to play more carefully (with or without 2nd wave options, that's up to you). You will quickly learn the hard way that tactics that you can get away with on Normal simply no longer work.
Put another way, you're supposed to die, horribly, in a fire
I have just finished, Classic ironman with random stats, random stat growth, and random abilities while doing An Army of 4. And i can tell you i had a blast, army of 4 makes the game just the right kind of difficult for me. I find impossible is sadomasochistically painful, and regular classic way to easy, so removing 2 guyz was good idea.
Now i am playing with everything above + marathon, E-115, Red Fog, random funding and random awards, enjoying it allot so far.
The most game altering second wave options are marathon and random abilities, it really bumps up replay ability.
Thanks for the tip about rockets. Use the jet jumps to get elevation so you have line of sight with rockets. Cool idea.
I usually begin playing any new game at easier levels. This way I have opportunity to get a feel for the options, consequences of choices made, and enjoy the story line. This is especially necessary for me as the documentation for X-com is almost non-existent. For example, just go look for where it tells you how to save a game. They don’t. What do the icons mean? If I move the soldier one move, what does that leave for choices? What resources are needed for that new weapon? What’s the tradeoff with producing that new weapon, a foundry project, or researching a new tech? The info is just not there, and blindly making choices that preclude other choices is not fun. The fun is in making interesting choices / tradeoffs, not blind choices with unknown consequences. You actually have to play A-com to find out. So I work my way up.
Classic level, already have. I just finished my second play through - Classic level - New wave - created unequal. I lost one nation. Soldiers spent much more time in the infirmary. I was forced to have two squads worth of soldiers. Did much better with shooting down ufos – even though it’s a more difficult level. Lost one soldier in the throne room. He heroically jetted up to draw fine so the rest could concentrate on the chief ethereal. Many battles were hair rising. Surprised me. Lots.
Next play thru will be at more difficult level, and with Iron. Maybe explore the marathon game, etc. What’s your take on all the choices in the ‘new wave’ menu?
BTW, horrible fiery death is what you serve to the enemy. The main task of soldiers is to make it easier for enemy soldiers to die for their country. Keep the tips coming... I'm learning.
