Hi all!
I haven't played that many stardock games (only FE and gal civ 2) and I liked a lot of things of gal civ 2, among others the the sense of humor. Maybe it is a bit unnecessary to ask for this. Perhaps the humor was there in gal civ 1 as well and therefore probably will be there in gal civ 3. But I create this post, just as much to tell the SD-team how much I liked that part of the previous game, as I want to make a small wish to keep it in gal civ 3.
For instance. I just laugh when Lord Kona says something like: "Ahh, human, good to see you up on your hind legs"
Or when you get really powerful and talk to, say the Arcean, and they go something like: "I like you! I mean I really love you! Here have some stuff!" (and then they give like 54 credits...)
Or when the Korath clan comes up and say: "I just want to inform you that our civilization could utterly destroy yours. Not saying we would, just that we could, you know"
Or the little robot that present all the science breakthroughs.
And so on...
Its all these little things that make gal civ 2 such a great game (apart from everything else of course...)
Sincerely
/N
I just logged in, 7 years after creating this account, just to express myself in contrary of the OPs wishes. If there is one thing I'd change about the GC series, is the missplaced humor without a doubt. That's the most immersion breaking feature ever, how can I believe I rule an interstellar nation and affect the fate of billions of beings; when I came across those ridiculous phrases in the diplomacy screen! No to mention the horrendous tech descriptions! Thankfully I've long learned to ignore them completely, it's the only way really to pretend I am actually leading a civilization and not playing a silly game. Role play is not that important to me in general, but what little immersion I can get in any game, it's more than welcome most of the time. I hope this goes away with the square grid, the non interactive combat viewer and the limit to the number of ships in a fleet.
Much of the humor I liked ... but yeah the tech descriptions were a bit over the top sometimes, and it seems clear the text writer just got bored after awhile. Some of it isn't even formatted properly in ToA, seemingly manually line wrapped so it won't fill the width of the screen (and won't fit vertically).
I didn't mind the humor in GC2, but a little of that goes a long way.
"I just want to inform you that our civilization could utterly destroy yours. Not saying we would, just that we could, you know"
I like these kinds of concealed threats.
I love silly humor, but only in movies. Blazing Saddles, Airplane and Naked Gun are awesome comedies in my opinion. But my game, I want serious detailed facts. Dry or black humor is fine. But as stated, does not break immersion. I am the commander of worlds and billions of people, stupid robots are recycled!
DELETED
I liked the humor. It is part of the series. Removing it would remove part of what makes GalCiv GalCiv.
Granted, some of the tech descriptions were a little over the top, but they got much better in TotA. Overall though, I preferred the tech descriptions in GalCiv 1. They were very informative about the human civilisation. Yet, they also retained a level of humor at times, but without going into silliness. The tech trees in TotA went into a similar direction, but they didn't went far enough, in my opinion. I want to know much more about the other civilisations.
yes please keep the humor ... it is one of the major perks of the series
GalCiv III will still be light hearted and humorous but I think the quality of the writing will be better.
For GalCiv II, me, Mormegil and his wife would go out to have margaritas and write text for the game. I can assure you, it seemed really funny at the time.
Are you telling me there will be no more Margaritas
We're just not taking the laptop to the pub anymore.
So we'll need to be drinking to get some of the humor?
Hey, The Galactic Civilizations Shots Game™!
Most infamous example was Xeno Farming and the "Old McDonald had a farm.." thing.
Okay, I'll admit, that one did kinda stand out for me.
I enjoy the light hearted moments. The game is considered a "serious" 4x game that can still have fun with itself. To my noodly mind that means the game is just that good.
That still makes me laugh after 5 years of playing GC2.I like the allusions to star trek on the tech descriptions.
"If you cant laugh at yourself being a galactic ruler, who can you laugh at?"
Haha, cool story.
Old McDonald had a farm...Eyey Eyey O...And on his farm he had a Khzithak...Eyey Eyey O...With a ARHHFAHHAAAAAAAAARRRGIIIAAA HELP AAAUUU HELP! IT'S GNAWING OFF MY...
That was one of my favorites!
I don't mind the humor, but I would just like to see it balanced with more a more factual presentation. I really like the galactic encyclopedia approach of Mass Effect 1, for example. The writing and the voice narration of the various entries in that game really remind me of a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. That could work well for GalCiv III.
If only you could get Richard Ridings in to read the technology descriptions.
"Your minions have discovered a lost technology in the next room. You will find that this low broad downing soft item of furniture has the power to cure fatigue and restore vitality."
It definitely had a homemade feel, I like that.
I not only like the humor, I love it! My favorites are evil races attempting to be nice. "Your skin looks delicious!" is one of my favorites.
Don't ever lose the humour in GalCiv ...... that'll be worse than finding an Aircraft Carrier in the driveway ...
Another one:
You wouldn't believe what I read in Torture Today Magazine. But it's a long story. What's up?
Unless Douglas Adams is writing I would stick to a serious theme.Old McDonald jokes and Snathi kinda take you out of the moment.
I would be quite impressed, if they manage to get Douglas Adams to write the jokes.
