I don't know the odds of it happening, but I want GalCiv 3 to be made available on other digital distribution platforms (platforms other than Steam). I made a wishlist entry here on GOG:http://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/galactic_civilizations_3If you don't already know, GOG (Good Old Games) is a DRM free digital distributor. When you buy a game there, you can download the game as files which you can then run on your computer. These files don't need a separate downloader or installer program, they don't need to call home, etc. They are complete. They are clean of unwanted extras. GOG may have made their name on good old games, but they also deal in new games as well (not long ago I pre-ordered Shadow Warrior 2013 from them). So nothing will stop them from putting this game in their library... short of Stardock saying no.As such, I would like those of you who read this thread and want a non-Steam version of the game, to go vote using the link I provided. Many games there have got 10k+ votes, so I'm hoping for that. I really want Stardock to consider GOG to be a viable option. I think many votes will help them see it as a good option.
This already been answered in the FAQ:
Q: Will the game require a network connection to play?A: No. However, some of the AI learning mechanisms will require access to the Metaverse in order to perform analysis on player strategies. This will be optional and able to be disabled by the player but does require an Internet connection.
Thank you Gaunathor, that answers that question, I thought I saw it somewhere thought it was in the forum. Much appreciative.
@Frogboy
some people are a tad concerned about the online requirement mostly because FE:LH requires steam to run. In that, if Steam is not running, and you launch the exe directly, it launches Steam as an online authentication. i think that may cause people to feel that the game has an "online requirement".
That's Steamworks loading. Steam has to be running for Steamworks to work.
But if you're already run the game once, and you run it again where you don't have a connection, it'll still work. Steam starts up and goes into offline mode in that case, and the game runs. GC3 should work the same way.
You can test it if you have FE:LH. Shut Steam down, remove the network cable/disable wifi, and start FE:LH.
Well just so you know, I got a reply back from GOG this morning. Cue drumroll.
I made a typo in my e-mail address when I signed up.
Feel free to point and laugh.
Well, I'm glad things are working for you now with GOG. I hope its smooth sailing from here on out.
happens to the best of us. Least you got it sorted out.
Voted!
Please don't make steam a requirement.
Wow. A cultist. Or one of those eyePhone zombies. Coverted people are the worst zealots? Keep your Elite Attitude™ that I'll stick to my Trying To Be Open Minded™.
1+ for you Wintersong!
I love GOG.I hate Steam. The only reason we're having this conversation is because I also love Stardock.I approve this idea.
This game requires Steam libraries and tools (otherwise known as Steamworks) to actually run. Good luck getting it to work without Steam.
Besides, it can be run offline for eternity after the initial authorization. So what's the big deal? Don't want to be online for 99.999% of the time? Great news, you won't need to be!

Now the windmill I'm personally tilting at is OS X/Linux support. It's a pain to keep booting into my Wintel partition everytime I want to play the game. . Playing it on my Mac partition would be SO much better for my playing experience.
The game will be pirated, GoG or no GoG. A lot of Steam-only games are pirated. It all boils down to players, whether they recognize the game's worth or not. A DRM-full game will usually be cracked even sooner as it is a challenge...
We’ve actually just had the pleasure of releasing our first titles from the Stardock catalog on GOG.com!
As of half an hour ago, the following items are available on our site:
— Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition
— Galactic Civilizations III
— Galactic Civilizations III Soundtrack
— Galactic Civilizations III - Map Pack DLC
— Galactic Civilizations III - Mega Events DLC
— Galactic Civilizations III - Revenge of the Snathi DLC
We’ve also got some awesome deals on them, so be sure to check them out
Thanks for all those wishlist votes, guys, and stay awesome!
Absolutely right, and most Devs know this. In fact, harsh drms like Steam, Origin, etc, hurt the non-pirate than the actual pirate who just laughs at it.
I recently checked the GOG front page and saw the big news for more GalCiv titles on GOG. That was great new for me. However, I have a question. Is there a redemption program going on? I kinda payed $100 for the founder elite version, which includes all DLC that is ever made. I would like my money's worth on GOG if possible. If yes, it would make my mood even better.
I just got an email that showed GalCiv3 for sale on GOG. That's pretty cool! Can I divorce my Elite Founder's version from Steam now or is that not a thing?
A question like that came up in a recent live stream. The staff don't know the answer yet. They are concerned that some people who already use their steam key will simply sell any GOG key they're given to other people. They have no means to enforce that people who use the GOG keys they give out will be the same people who used it on steam. This will be something they have to think about.
Well, if it's open to abuse, it's not that important to me. I'll keep the Steam version.
