I love 4X sci-fi games, but 99% of them just seem so lifeless to me. In a lot of these games, planets come across as lifeless points on a map that serve as little more than resource generators and conquerable spots. Fleets provide the only real life in the galaxy as we can see them zip around, but even here the ships often seem like solid hunks of metal that just blindly obey the player's orders. Some games have "characters", but in reality these "people" act as little more than stat boosters.
I really hope GalCiv III breaks this lifeless trend. I would really love to see this game adopt some of the ideas found in other strategy games, such as Crusader Kings II. It would be nice to be able to choose from a retinue of people, each with their own traits and personalities, to be our colonial governors, fleet admirals, research scientists, etc, and then actually hear from these people about their concerns, etc. Likewise, LOTS of random events would be fun - GalCiv II already had these, but I mean I want a LOT more, and events that deal with minor stuff (petitions for jobs, labor riots, stuff like that) as well as major events (rebellions, disasters, etc).
However it is done, please just make GalCiv III's universe seem populated with something more than planets and ships. Give the galaxy's "little people" a voice and role, too!
Heh, that's more or less my feelings as well. Distant Worlds spoiled me, but I'll still be happy if GC3 has even a fraction of the atmosphere DW does.

I've been playing GalCiv II again and I think the secret to bringing GalCiv III's universe to life could be the Galactic News Network. In GalCiv 2, you got the full GNN treatment with a tech breakthrough, and a simple GNN report at the start of every turn. I would love to see the GNN become much more active in the game, with it being used to report on all sorts of events in detail, with lots of video. I am reminded of the old sub game Seawolf that had its own TV news network that would report on the player's action in the war, complete with video clips of the player sinking ships, etc. Something similar in GalCiv III could be fun, especially if it covered major events in the galaxy by all players.
An expansion of the GNN would be awesome. Especially if they are as hilarious as the research complete screens.
I'd love to see GalCiv3 have features like Crusader Kings2 or Knights of Honor.
It would make it more alive, deeper, and fun.. As the OP says - not just map points to cap.

How about players paying for BIAS in GNN reports influencing public opinion and factions?
Interesting. If GNN were an actual entity you could interact with - sending spies, bribing, invading their office planet, etc - it would make for some cool scenarios...
This is kind of what i wanted when i made a thread called Enriching the galaxy.One of the reasons for that was that when i played Mass Effect 3 mini mining and scanning game with the Normandy SR2 there was a ton of planets in the galaxy and each one had a small or a long description about some ruin being found, or scientists discovering something, or that this particular gas giant is a an extra-solar capture, or binary stars, systems with different star sizes(because lets face it different colors is not enough).
Also information about planets and stars like rotation cycles, gravity, surface temperature core and atmospheric composition go along way to make a galaxy seem like an exiting place.
Comets and zipping around, and giant gass cloud formations acting as space terrain would also improve the feel of the galaxy.

What would really help this for me (and some of this is probably a product of the trailer) is a much better sense of what everything looks like. Not sure how exactly to go about doing this in practice.
I personally would hate this system.
I want civilian ships! Let them dart around in real time, since they would be cosmetic. This would be like Sins of a Solar Empire, where as a Trader Emergency Coalition player I had hundreds of trade ships and refinery ships. Such a small detail, but little autonomous ships add so much atmosphere.
Adding planetary details and interstellar topography would go a long way in bringing the main map alive as well
All of those cosmetic ships running around like that would be very distracting to me. If this is done, I will desperately need a toggle switch in the startup options to turn it off.
Yes, of course, but from what Brad has said, the game is going to be much more flexible this time around. Also, given the fact that GC2 had an option for every... damn... thing... I wouldn't worry about it lol
One thing U could add is that the Yor and the Korath would kill U because the Yor hate organic organisms caused from when the Iconians and the Precursor enslaved them. The Korath hates all nin Drengin except the Yor. The Drengin would try to enslave them. R the Krynn Jihadists like the game claims. If this is so then they would enslae, kill, or accept tribute from all who don;t follow the way of Krynn for two years, and if they don;t change to becoming a follower then they will kill them. They wouldn't believe that their could be peace until all Drengin r destroyed, and the game calls this good. If u r wondering where I got this from its the fact that the game has modeled them after Islam. This is what the Koran tells us to do to all nonbelievers.

I won't say that I don't get fustrated with games. This is what is in us that makes us better game players. Frustration is not a problem.

Where's the option to shut off planet trading. Trading and buying techs, but giving up your soveirnty for money isn't. Shut off the planet trading option.

I have to agree i would hate a system of that kind as well. One of the reasons i find Endless Space so off putting is the fact that there is no large surface of space and you can't go where ever you want but instead you are locked into systems with routs in between.
Now I get it. A play on a misspelling of puny (as in small, insignificant, etc.) into punny (sp) (as in constantly making puns).
Your not alone, trust me, that is what Gal Civ I-III will be all about hopefully, We got some interesting surprises in store along with some multiplayer community and whatever the likes.
Guys, once again space pollution is definitely a good idea if you want space to change overtime... Have some asteroids, space junk and plasma storms around the solar systems and you got a good lively environment.
