Will GalCiv III be supporting any platforms other than Windows? Specifically, you really need to release a Mac & Linux version. You'll find there are a lot of eager Mac/Linux gamers out there who are ready to throw their money at you for native versions. How about some love for us non-Windows users?
Linux IMO would be the best second choice. This type of game is likely to attract the Linux demographic the most. Of course, the issue is not so much a full scale port as much as it is making it work well with Wine.
Make work with Wine? Insane idea. First, it changes all the time. Second, the Windows changes all the time. How does one make sure in the middle, that it works in both? With native Linux format you have at least more control.
WINE doesnt support dx10 so it's not even possible
Wine may not be able to handle DX10, but I believe that Crossover can. So it's a compromise. If they ultimately decide against a native port, they could be nice and test it in Crossover to see if they can make it compatible.
Seems I was wrong. Crossover does not support anything beyond DX9. Oh, well. Still hoping for an OS X native version of GalCiv 3.
There are some problems with the Steam hardware survey. For one thing, it's not comprehensive. I've been using Steam for Linux for nearly a year, and I've never gotten a single survey request in all that time. Which brings up another problem: it's voluntary, so people can opt out, and their statistics won't be included. Finally, there's no way for the automated survey to account for people like me who have Steam installed in both Windows and Linux but prefer using Linux and will very likely stop using Windows completely within the next few years.
At any rate, there are obviously enough Linux consumers out there to convince Creative Assembly to port Total War: Rome 2 to Linux.

i couldn't stand my PC so I got rid of it and I love my Mac. I also love sci fi games, including Gal Civ. I'd gladly drop $100 right now to support the development of this game, but i can't rationalize doing that if I don't even know if I'm going to be able to play it on my computer...
Oh your computer can run it just fine. The problem is your OS, which you can swap for better one.
Uh thanks? I'm a bureaucrat, not a programmer. Part of the reason I ditched my PC is that even with a typical computer out of the box, i don't think I ever once purchased a piece of software that didn't require some sort of tech support or custom instal to get to run properly. I'm sure I'll get some scorn from the community for not being more tech literate, but with kids and a more than full time job, my time is at a premium and I want to maximize what free time I have playing the game not screwing around with my computer or purchasing more programs to run the game. Anyone have cheese to go with my whine?
If Stardock announce that they will support mac, I will easily give them $100 for the game in a heartbeat.
Some of these comments don't make sense like the Mac has always been known for superior graphics to the P.c. Yes until the Mac went to Intel processors it was a microcomputer. P.c. was a name given to the I.b.m. microcomputer. The reasons why people still cling to the P.c.'s is that they are easier to upgrade, program, and the non propriety of software and hardware. According to one survey half the computers use Linux on the planet.
Just three years ago I was solely using a distribution of linux called Knoppix to run my computer. One I couldn't find a way to use my windows programs. I called tech support for the internet and they wouldn't even help me to get on the internet, so I stopped my internet service. I wasn't going to have internet service I could 't use. I couldn't find out how to download software from the internet. For a modern operating you would think they would want their desktop to be competive with other operating systems. I like they have a Dos emulator, but if all your emulator does is run Dos programs and not work like dos what good is it.
I think the reason why people aren't gaming as much on Linux is it is not easy to find modern games, or Linux's idea of gaming is not modern. If there were more modern games on Linux, and they made it easy to download them then there would be more Linux gamers. Then you are also forgetting that windows is pretty much dummying down the computer. As long as windows insist on the user interface; eventually they are going to not have the desktop or have the classic shell. This is a huge incentive to go to Linux. I guess the only thing that keeps me on windows is games. With the user interface going to be the future of computing I'll be forced over to Linux. I really hope games will start to go over to Linux, so there will be good Linux games to play since windows is insisting on the user interface. Please don't make me go out and buy a Play station because windows is ruining the computer.
I dream of operating and software being free; because, of Linuxes method of deciding what software to download you don't have to worry about bullying free programs. Where areas windows free programs try to Hijack your computer. Free programs work better on Linux than windows. Yes I dream of a computing where you don't have to pay for software.
The reason there aren't as much gamers on Linux is because there aren't modern games on Linux. If more games port to Linux there would be more gamers on Linux. This is good for Stardock down the road. Let's not forget about the other gaming platforms. It would be cost effective to port to other gaming platforms. Another reason to remember is that Bill gates is planning to destroy computer gaming while he wants everyone to use the Xbox instead, so this is a good reason to go to other platforms since Microsoft is trying to throw you off.
We are actually talking about only changing the graphics part of the programs. Linux is 64 bit. If Stardock is smart they would have made their graphics seperate modules, or better yet seperate programs. For the most part Linux has the same kind of languages as windows. The only you have to change is how it handles DirectX. They could call in someone to reprogram this. They should have descent documentation that tells them where this is. If they are using a word processor instead of the native text editor, and saving it in text mode. Then this would be an easy search issue. They could come out with the game first then port to other platforms. Yes the game could be made to do this. I totally support DerectX 10 and 64 bit, but uf you went to platform of something else there is no reason you couldn't dummy this down, or hard code the graphics.
I'm up for a Linux and a Mac version. Aside from shopping around for a new laptop, with the new Retina Pros being an option, I simply prefer as many platforms to be supported as possible. Spread the love. I may primarily game on Windows, but that doesn't mean others should be left out in the cold.
Out of the box and probably full of crapware. No wonder your life was pain. When I buy a PC, the first thing I do is uninstall all Norton programs and other shit the mfg decided to put in. Sometimes I even do a OEM Windows install to get rid of those. And most of the time my life is just the bliss without problems, but of course there are random hardware issues still. With all those China manufactures today, it just doesn't always work. That is why I prefer premium RAM, SSD and even motherboard instead the cheapest available. Intel is the word with cpu's and nvidia with display cards. Although for Bitcoin mining the AMD's ATI is way too fast.
I just eliminate the middle man and format the damn thing. Not like I need the 'recovery' partition to I can get MORE junk installed if the computer dies. Besides I'm usually installing it on a computer I built anyway, or I ordered for the inlaws/parents.
Yea, like I said, sometimes that is what I do too. For the sake of just some minor irritation I however might go the easy way and just use uninstall. Installing oem windows might require drivers which I might be too lazy to find and install. Besides, not many options in this country to build own laptops.
Add me to the list of people who will spend $100 if the game is made playable on Macs. For now I will keep watching the development, but going to hold onto my money until a Mac version comes along.

? You're already a founder.....
Mac and Steambox support are likely but NOT promised. Depends on the challenge of supporting OpenGL.
Did you make it, to what can only be described as "Valve's Reality Distortion Field", at Valve Dev Days?
What about Linux. Your the main reason I'm still on Windows.
Ehm... That's exactly my friend's position - he use windows only because of Stardock!
Well in the future windows is planning to get rid of the desktop instead of the user interface; which gives us less flexibility to do with the computer. This is Dos all over again. Where Linux is just the opposite where they want to give you more control on yor computer. Not to mention safe free software on a more stable system.
I'm stuck with Windows anyway - my working software is Windows only, running an emulator turn it from turn-based to... eh... I don't even know next degree of slowpokeness - play by pigeon?
No they're not. In fact the current information on Windows 9 is the opposite of that (strengthening the desktop mode by making it and Metro play more nicely together).
They can't get rid of the desktop mode for one simple reason - their corporate users have billions of dollars in custom LOB software that relies on it. It's the same reason Office still supports VBA. Right now it's very easy for corporate users to stick with Windows because all of their applications run on it.
The desktop existing is vital to Microsoft's corporate lock in. Drop it, and there is no reason for most companies to keep using Windows at all. If they have to rewrite everything for Metro/WinRT, why not rewrite it for the web and use cheaper Linux desktops or Android tablets instead?
Do either of you have pointers to credible disclosures of your statements? I really do hate rumors and "the rumor mill".
Tridus, while the statements you used to support your counter-argument do sound rational, I can't help but notice they look like nothing more than rationalizations to support it. This is why I am asking for credible links.
