We’re far from finished with Galactic Civilizations III, but we are thrilled to start sharing what the team has been hard at work on. You’ll have to forgive us for being a little cryptic about gameplay specifics that are still in development yet, but we hope you find the trailer an acceptable peace offering.
The whole point of Galactic Civilizations III is to live up to what our fans are hoping for without screwing up the core gameplay that make the franchise one of the highest-rated strategy series in history. So we’re adding hexes, because they make better maps. We’re putting new stuff out on the map besides anomalies, because it adds depth to how you explore and colonize the galaxy. Diplomacy and non-violent paths to victory have always been key aspects of Galactic Civilizations, so we’re adding tons more cool stuff to diplomacy (both mechanically and on the AI side) and adding more ways to interact beyond pushing your influence bubble into enemy territory.
And, of course, Galactic Civilizations III has fully featured online multiplayer. Yes, we heard you on that one.
There’s a lot more to talk about in the coming months, but for now I invite you to enjoy the trailer, read up on the lore and the history of the franchise, and browse through the FAQ. Whether or not you join the Founder’s program, we hope you’ll come back for more as we continue to pull back the curtain on Galactic Civilizations III.

They haven't given a release date yet. They did however state the Alpha would be around the first of the year (2014) with the beta soon to follow. So we can estimate that the Alpha will last a couple months, the Beta a couple more months. Assuming the Beta does't drag on I would assume the release would be late Spring to early Summer (2014).
I'm not bothered about multi-player, but will we still be able use the multiverse? I used to enjoy competing that way, and it was a unique approach in my experience.
Really looking forward to playing GalCiv again after a few years of sticking to Civ IV/V.
Cheers!
Hiya
Thanks for the fast reply. I'll calm down again and get excited next year instead!
Cheers
Funny thing is, I remember having so much fun during the GalCivII Beta that the actual release was kind of anti-climactic. It was like, "Yeah...but I've already been playing this for a year!"
this is a good thing.

I'm a fan of this style of game, and always really happy to see the genre is still alive. And this looks like it will be a wonderful example of the grand old 4X.
I'd be really looking forward to it -- EXCEPT
I run Linux and it looks like this game is being put together in about the most Linux-hostile (and generally portability-hostile) way you can (DirectX rather than OpenGL, for instance). I suspect that not only will it obviously not have a Linux port, but Wine won't run it worth beans. I never got GalCiv II to run on Wine to any useful effect.
Doesn't help that I have a 32-bit machine. So, yeah, guess I won't be buying. Pity, there aren't many games I'm interested in; everything's FPS and similar stuff these days. I'm sure your reasons are excellent, but I thought I'd register the fact that there are tradeoffs and my not buying something that's useless to me is one of them.
So how many of you still play GC II (any edition) on a regular basis?
Any chance that Galactic Civilizations III will reach the far away galaxy known as mac?
I do, absolutely.
Just bought the Elite Edition! I know it will be money well spent.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit: I just noticed the question above my post. Going to reinstall GCII sometime over the weekend. I've been too busy playing Sins of a Solar Empire too much to switch back over the GCII!!!!
I am so in. It will be a bit before I get the nessesary cash though.
So... this is like a dream come true (especially the multiplayer part) .
Well I have it installed on my beast pc, but haven't played it for like... two months. I love this game.
I love how people (and me somewhat) are like 'I don't have enough money!' This is the stuff you have to save money for! I was thinking, alright gonna save up for awhile, but I know that this game and Stardock are so good that I can drop a hundred dollars and not even flinch.
And with all the people that have bought the founder's package, Stardock has to be pretty happy!
Those were my feelings exactly. I remember posting one of the first scores to the Metaverse, and having the high score for about 12 hours. Took a week or so off from playing the game, and could never again crack the top 10. Good times.
Yeah, I only broke the top 100 during the Beta and then again when people slowly stopped playing...
I fired up a new game of it THE DAY BEFORE THE ANNOUNCEMENT.
Psychic Readings now offered - $99 a time
Multiplayer........and so it begins.
YESSSSS!!!
Any other long-time fan is HAPPY for the great news. I've been waiting for this since many-many years. As in early stage as The GAME is in yet, I have even purchased yesterday the ELITE Founder package already. I am also among those true real fans who happily support such a quality games as this one. Can't wait for the Alpha to open it's doors for us to experience and even shape the development of this MASTERPIECE...
Is this where we ask for carriers?
EDIT: Yay! My Founder's badge finally appeared!
I have a question about accessibility. 4X strategy games usually have oodles and oodles of data and number crunching, which can be way overwhelming. I'm curious if StarDock is doing anything, or planning on making it accessible to new players so as to not get overwhelmed with all that information and data?
[EDIT]
Also yay, my badge too shows up...
Hurray for hexes! So tired of new games still using squares.
Support emailed and said that there was a glitch in the system and we should all be fixed now.
It is, unfortunately, no longer hip to be square.
When I got to Afghanistan for my first tour I started a humongous map on GalCivII and played every night when I could. That lasted me a while.
I trust that the ship builder will allow for me to build Star Trek, B5, and BSG type starships?!?!
Andrew
Why would you wanna do that? I rather build a ship what is unique, a "stand alone" model so if others see they will all say that "I WANT THAT!!!" but not because it is a replica, a copycat of others' original idea. Be yourself and transfer your own characteristic into your VERY OWN ship model.
